I'm glad you were able to enjoy Drunk and Hot Girls without being told what to think. It is a hugely misunderstood song. The song is criticized for being creepy and uncomfortable when that is exactly what is intended. Kanye is showing us how money and fame can turn a man into a monster. We are meant to notice a contrast between celebratory tracks like “Good Life” on the first half of the album and “Drunk and Hot Girls” on the second half. On “Good Life” he keeps “it coming with the bottles ‘til she feel booze like she bombed at Apollo.” Everything on “Good Life” is described as a “living spree” and uncritically a good thing.
On “Drunk and Hot Girls” the tone becomes dark, and we see how that same behaviour can be destructive for both sides of the exchange. Kanye is caught in a cycle of empty sexual transactions with women he doesn’t want anything to do with. The behaviour hurts not only himself but the women he engages with, as he uses alcohol to manipulate them into the bedroom. Now the girl is vomiting and he’s still asking if she wants another “sippy sippy.” This is not a celebration. It’s sad.
This is why Mos Def near the end of the song sings, "Love: the dangerous necessity that people seek without regard to where they are." In other words, people look for love in the wrong places, and will do terrible things to get it. Kanye has a hole inside him and will go against his own morals to fill it. Perhaps more than any other artist, Kanye is willing to put all his cards on the table.
Kanye is a big fan of movies and one of his favourites is American Psycho starring Christian Bale. The movie explores how men of great success and power can become hollow shells of themselves to the point that they become psychotic. This is a primary theme in Kanye’s music: he always places the most beautiful thoughts beside the darkest, so we get a complex picture of what it means to be a man who has achieved “the good life.”
We can think of Kanye as a film director constructing an ongoing character study spanning the entirety of his adult life. Through his albums, we get to see a person reach stratospheric levels of success while trying not to lose their soul in the process.

@@bobthepoppop You have a deeper understanding of Kanye than a lot of Kanye fans. A lot of this stuff goes over people's heads. At the same time most people don't pay that close attention to the lyrics so that's probably why. Kanye is a master storyteller. I love how clever he is and he really uses "show don't tell" to great effect. Everything he does is so visual where you can't help but picture what he says in your mind.

It’s so refreshing seeing a fan that understands Drunk and Hot Girls. Everytime I ask people why they don’t like it they just say “it’s rapey” like yes that’s the point. Kanye said recently on the Drunk Champs Podcast that he is a huge fan of the redemption and criticised drake for being toxic in his a lot of his music without giving himself a redemption. Kanye always does this, like in gold digger where most of the song criticises women for being gold diggers but flips it on its head in the final verse to point out if she does stay loyal the man is going to end up replacing her with a gold digger when he becomes rich anyway. The same is here, Kanye is a sleaze/rapey the entire song but the Mos Def bridge turns it into this being a dark tale of modern day love that’s become so distorted from what it once was as Kanye raps “now I’m with this girl for the rest of my life”. I’m honestly not articulate enough to express my points well enough so I’m glad I was finally able to see someone put it too words, it’s honestly top 5 on graduation for me and I’m glad that some people out there respect it as much as me.

Usually because of nostalgia, but especially because i am a student in college now and i really don’t know if i want to do the profession i am learning for. i'm exactly in the same place as you. studying business right now, and I do enjoy the quantitative aspects of it, but some of these classes I feel have killed my motivation and outlook on the field (covid and online school for 2 years is defo part of that). When i was in high school, I had creative interests (and still do) but never actualized them into something i realistically thought would make a practicl career so I didn't apply to programs related to that at the time. It's this point of hesitancy where it feels the future is at stake but listening to music like this gives me hope and makes me feel less anxious. Or at least, it's inspiring to feel like dreams can still be fulfilled and hobbies/passions can have their time to coexist

Just wanted to give some context for the album:
Kanye went on tour with U2 and thus saw these fully packed up arena’s and crowd. So with Graduation he wanted to make an album with anthem songs. Songs that are ar it’s best for concerts and stadiums. He used a lot of synths for this. And me personally i think he did an unbelievable job.

Both massive stadium tours, and he got inspired to make music that sounded grand and could fill out a stadium sonically. The massive synths and anthemic sounding melodies are a direct result of this, he's indeed said repeatedly that touring with them were direct inspirations.

You'd be surprised to find out that most of the album more so deals with the break up than the loss of his mother. It has felt like all the way up until 2021, he's been very hesitant to deal with his grief after his mom died. As far as I can tell, it's the biggest reason why he has so many issues: He never dealt with it until the last few years. If you look at pictures of him from after Donda came out, hes always smiling, and it looks genuine for once. Even though his friend Virgil Abloh just passed and hes having a divorce, you can tell he's trying his best to move forward.

I think it's a great way to further conceptualize the idea of self-acceptance that people so often struggle with. I think, too often, people try to expel their flaws in order to become a "correct" version of who they are, but that isn't how it works. We all carry flaws, baggage, erratic emotions, etc. It's part of who we are. Just like centuries of rain carves a canyon, so do the events in our lives-good or bad-carve us.

"Can't Tell Me Nothing" is not about getting his mind right. The song is about acquiring wealth as a black man in America. Once he acquires that wealth, the people who talked down to him and oppressed him can no longer oppress him.
He's moved out the hood and lives in the same neighborhood with privileged folks who can't relate to his struggle. So in his mind, no one can tell him nothing because they can't walk in his shoes.
The black man from the hood can't tell him nothing, because he's still broke in the hood. And the white man in suburbs can't tell him nothing, because he can't relate to making it out of the hood.

All I have is this funny story with this album. I had just graduated High School and would go and mow my grandma's massive yard, water flowers, etc., for extra money each week or so. She was INSANELY particular with her yard, to an obsessive degree. It was like her own flex to her neighbors with how well it always looked and kept up. lol So I would always be paying close attention to what was I was doing. Well, the morning this album dropped I went and got it on my way to mow her yard. Put the headphones on, turned the music up, and got to mowing. I already was a Kanye Stan, so I was just blown away sonically with the album. An hour into the mowing I notice the yard looked fucked up. Badly. The ground was still wet from the previous nights rain, and all you could see were rows of mud. Not just a few rows, but almost an acre. I had lowered the blade WAY too low and was so into the music that I literally did not notice something that was so obviously in my face, as I was repeatably doing it. haha My grandma, shocked and pissed, swore I was drunk and supervised my next few times mowing. She didn't accept my blaming of Kanye. haha
I can always tell you the day and what was going on emotionally in my life around that time when each of his albums came out, and this one was always fun to look back on. Oh, how I miss being 19. lol

Ohh man, my story discovering Kanye its Kinda Bizzare, I remember back in 2008, I was Watching some Modded GTA San Andreas Video, CJ was Sonic and then Sonic Turned into Golden Sonic and Stronger started blasting in the video and I was amazed, I asked My Sister what was that song, she told me the name, but I really became a fan with TLOP

An interesting thing I find, with the track "Everything I Am", is the song itself is an example of something he is not, that made him what he is. The song originally would have been a Common (the rapper named Common) song that Kanye produced, but because he passed on it, it became instead a Kanye song on Graduation and one of the highlights on the album (at least in my opinion).

Man, one of the things I love about bob is the wisdom he provides when he tries to infer the meaning of a song. I’ve heard I Wonder well over 100 times and I never even considered the fact that the song could be about wondering about the adverse of having your dreams come true. I always believed that the song was about kind of showing off in a happy way. “And I wonder if you know what it mean to find your dreams come true” I find it crazy how we both listened to the same song and yet interpreted it completely differently.

Its very interesting watching you analyze the meaning behind the music you react to. Ive been watching your content for awhile now and i always love how you come to slightly different conclusions as to the meaning of the songs from me. Like ive always seen cant tell me nothing as talking about how artists are lead to believe that success and money is all they need to worry about and how they lose sight of themselves in the process, but your theory about money serving as a stand-in for the mind honestly is an amazing idea that id never considered. It low key compliments my previous ideas about the song in a cool way

And at that time Kanye was just a normal dude rapping about everyday struggles like surviving on minimum wage where a lot more people relate to rather than his new problems of growing fame.
