  • drumcam footage of Kevin Murphy with Jon Pardi in Saratoga Springs, NY - Aug 2018.
    Two GoPro sessions synced with Kevin's in ear mix with click.
    I decided to keep the click in for curious drummers to hear how/where I bury it versus pull back, etc. One month into the gig and songs are starting to settle into good spots. This is top of show.

    Thanks for sharing this Kevin. Killer as always. I like the slightly different set up from the Randy Houser tour set-up. An additional rack tom, and the cymbals are a little higher. Good mix of cymbal textures, beautiful Ludwig set as always!

    I love watching this kind of footage. It really gives some great insight to what's running on your rig. Thanks for sharing! (PS, I grew up about 50 miles south of this place and can't tell you how many evenings I sat on the other side of the stage wondering what the view was like from up there ... now I know!) .

    • @TheBigrightfoot

      They're a blend. pop open any DAW, even garage band will do, and record a harsh sound with a strong transient, like a woodblock or cowbell, and then something softer like a shaker providing subdivision, and mix them to where is sounds pleasing! My session computer is somewhere locked down with m touring kit, but i'll root around and see if I have them on a harddrive. If I find them ill put up a YT of just clicks!

    What app are you using there to trigger the click/trax and cues? thanks!

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  6 років тому +2

      At that time the clicks/counts/loops were fired via an app called "lemur", which I know nothing about, to in turn fired ableton. I found the iPad system to be problematic and not an intuitive surface for performing, and now fire Ableton via a Roland SPD-sx

    • @drumrswag
      @drumrswag 6 років тому

      Kevin Murphy thank you! I use my Roland Spdsx to run click/tracks and play samples but was just curious what app that was haha. I’ve used Ableton before but never with my pad. Need to try it out!

      The set up fits the requirements, so if the artist wants double kicks in a metallica cover, one accquires double kick pedal to do that. I'll try to play cooler shit with 'em. ;)

    Awesome. Just reading your response about firing Ableton from an IPad. I agree it sucks. I’ve been using an iOS app called SoundCue. I’ve been exporting tracks from Ableton to .wav files with click and counts panned left and the track panned right. Easier than dragging an Ableton rig around. Only problem is you can’t edit the tracks on the fly

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  5 років тому

      Great solution if you can and want to avoid the trigger pads/laptops/interface ableton thing. My FOH requires mixability for loops and the occasional piano track, so ableton is a must for this one.

    Solid work! Cheers from France!

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  5 років тому

      Nope, any song changes come directly from Jon or our MD/bass, Lee. I'm likely getting monitor adjustments or mentioning something to Circus Bear that I might need.

    Hey Kevin, thanks for posting live vid of the show! It looks like you scaled down your rig. Are you running all your clicks/backing off the iPad or is there more off screen?

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  6 років тому +1

      Nathan - the iPad is just an interface to launch Ableton, which for this act is only providing click and some loops. It is problematic, leftover system from before my time, which I am replacing now with a surface I can strike to launch clicks.

    what is mounted under your throne with the cords coming out of it?

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  5 років тому +2

      Believe it or not, that's called a "Buttkicker". It is a device wired to an amplifier, fed signal from my monitor engineer, who is sending the kick drum and some of the bass guitar to it. Instead of having love frequencies pumped straight into my in ears, It shakes my throne at those freqs instead, so I feel the kick and only the high end "click" of the beater hitting the head is in my ears.

  • @ljjohnson954
    @ljjohnson954 6 років тому

    I gotta know what apps you having running on the iPads. I’ve been trying to find something good for my in ears. What are you running?

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  6 років тому

      LJ Johnson - The person who built the Ableton session somehow talked the previous drummer into firing Ableton via an iPad Jain an app called “lemur”, telling me that neither had ever really thought about the mechanics of the job. New system being built, so one iPad will go away. The other is just pics of hand written charts for songs in the set and a pile of potential covers that Jon might jump into. Barely glancing over now after three weeks on the gig, but still have it there for potential audibles by artist til I’m more comfortable.

    were you playing with a nashville numbers chart on your tablet Kevin?

    • @TheBigrightfoot
      @TheBigrightfoot  6 років тому +2

      No. I typically only use the number system in the studio. Since live is a less controlled environment I sometimes use a simpler timing, count chart to give me hints for stops and key fills, etc.
