Tim, Thanks for sharing this video. I have a VTS story of my own. I was sailing my 28’ Hunter in the Buttermilk at 2 am. I was contacted on 13 by a tug boat captain on channel 13 and asked to turn to channel 14 and contact VTS. They informed me of a large tow coming down the east river. I told them I was taking in my sail, turning on the motor and heading back to my home port at Liberty Landing Marina. It was nice to know that they are there and will contact civilian vessels to help keep us safe as well. Again, Thanks for sharing. Great video.
Thank you for watching Andrew. If you are new to the channel, Welcome. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. Being a sailor, you might also like my other channel SV Paquita. I sailed down to Puerto Rico and will be coming back north in the spring. CUOTO
This video is so much better than anything a TV station could do, mainly because it's produced by someone who intimately knows how all this works. A TV station would have a producer google "how does the Coast Guard handle NYC harbor traffic" then send some kid to shoot the story with a list of questions they probably don't remotely understand.
Thank you Andrew. i really appreciate that. I was a bit of a fan boy and had some technical problems, but I think it still conveys what they do and how they do it. CUOTO
22:15 -- Oh man, it is sooooooooooooo nice to see an operation like that that OPENLY AND EXPLICITLY understand that technology fails and they are FULLY PREPARED to deal with it. The list of places that need to have a serious meeting with these guys is near infinite.
Tim,enjoyed this video. When I was on CGC Hawser out of Governors Island,we made patrols all over the water ways in the area.Got a good laugh when you mentioned Dragon Lady. She was something.LOL They were removing the Newark Bay Draw at that time.It was quite the bottle neck.We the CG had to keep the peace around the demolition site.Especially when blasting. There was major problems with the Union and non union workers.1982-85 for me.BZ to VTS NY
I came here to say something about how the interview/tour went and I see its been covered by others folks comments and you've acknowledged how it went and what could have been different so thats all I'm going say about it. No need to beat a dead horse. Lol I personally think you were just so gosh darn excited to actually see the place and/or to show us that aspect of your working life. We see most of your work in your videos so this was a pretty big missing piece per se. It was pretty neat to see the heart and brains of vts. They seem like nice folks over there. Till the next sir, CYOTO 👊👊
Thank you for watching and a big thank you for reading the comments. I was so excited to be able to shoot in there, but I had all kinds of technical troubles. Bit of a fan boy. But at least we got it done. Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
I love seeing this sort of thing,. Not necessarilary from a viewers point of view, but from TimBs & the VTS operators. All too often we have to deal with people remotely, but only after having met them in their workplace can we truly understand how & why they work the way they do. Then we can much better understand what they can see, what they need to know, their pressures, etc and thus get a better handle on the situation behind any message communicated.
Ahoy Captain Tim. ⚓I'm fairly new to your channel and kept hearing you talk about this place. This was worth watching! As I've said before in my comments on other videos I know a few people around Baltimore who work for port operations that I've met through my antique furniture restoration business. One of them is a father son team who work traffic control out of their basement in Towson. I met them probably 20 or 25 years ago while on an estimate for "Mom". I never gave it much thought about how traffic was handled until then. I was telling a another friend of mine who's father was a bay pilot so I took him along one day with permission of course. Wow, what a interesting conversation those two had. Chip was in training to relieve his dad when he retired but unfortunately that didn't pan out. Well I could ramble on all day about this subject so I'll cut it short but I gotta say this sure is an interesting field to work in. I suppose it wasn't in my cards to land a job working on and around boats, just restoring them. That's a satisfying job in it's own right.
I had to comment on this video even though it was done months ago, I am just finding Tim's channel. As a former Coastie, this is very interesting to get to see how a VTC operates since I never had a chance to see one. It's always great to see how the various components of the service that I served in, operates. In my day, there was no internet and a place like UA-cam to see videos of this sort.
I retired after 15 years as tankerman then engineer and learned a lot about this valuable service the USCG provides. Thanks Cap and thank you to the Coast Guard
That is really incredible to actually get to see behind the scenes. A friend of mine has a video on here where he took a tour of TRECON Chicago for air traffic and it's incredible to see as well. For anyone interested his channel is Martin Pauly. Thank Tim for bringing us along with you in here it was awesome.
Another old Navy guy here (Hospital Corpsman). As my shipmate said, Bravo Zulu Tim. I wish I had access to videos like these back about 15 years ago when I was running a repair barge on The Lake of the Ozarks. New York Harbor is a bit more intense 😉 but the principles are the same. Knowing the weather , your surroundings, equipment and as with here, a dammed up river, water levels. I can relate to using the wind to help the job ( pushing docks ). And we have Coasties here as well 😎 Love this channel Tim. This is a great find 😎
I almost felt that it was a requirement to Watch This video, LOL. You talk about it so often. And now I know why. Thank you everyone and I like this video. I always do
I am so glad you were able to do the video at VT S that was very cool and the understanding of why what and how was priceless well done. Plus I bet it was fun for you to put faces to voices and the old school pick system is like a navy battle board
Wow. I remember back in the day's when I worked at 1 NY Plaza up on the 41 floor. My office window faced Gov Island with a great view of the big Radar mast for VTS and the building which was there home. I also had my two VHF marine radios on the desk tuned to the two freq. Scanners were not good receivers back then in the early 70's. It was also a sad time when I watched the Move of VTS off of Gov. Island. So today in Aug 2021 I am just finding out where there new home is. Not so new now. LOL This was such a way cool look at the behind the Harbor communications and safety scenes. Thank you Tim, and a very big Thank you to all you men and women Coast Guard and Civilians who watch our harbor. Great Job 24/7 365
Talking about a cadence on the radio, and old school nomenclature reminded me of when I drove a taxi. Like with mariners and VTS, the cab drivers and dispatchers had different things - when we didn't have anyone in our cab, we were "red" when we had someone we were "green" - dispatch had physical colors of the opposite. The city is/was divided into chunks that are numbered - but over the radio, the old school terms for some places are still used at times - like the international airport is "the field" and downtown is "baker" . . I don't know the history of why those places have those names. OMG, that magnetic map is awesome! A few years back, the cab company I worked for had some massive issue with the dispatch software, and needed to change, which took a lot of time. We were operating for dispatches via radio exclusively (it had been, and is again, computer) They had to keep track of what cabs were where in the city - if they were empty (red) had passengers (green) or were on their way to pick someone up - and the order of who had been in a particular zone the longest to know who got first dibs at a dispatch in that zone. I can't imagine what the stress level would be for VTS to go old school!! CUOTO
Did not realize that the coast guard actually served our marinars this way. Thank the coast guard for what they do. And great information on your part thank you
Thank you for watching the Gregory. If you are new to the channel, Welcome. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
She should. She's the boss. 😂 Thank you for watching Kevin. If you are new to the channel, Welcome. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
Tim, thank you for this great educational video. I had no clue about the VTS operations. Thanks to the VTS staff for taking the time & for all they do.
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. The good people at VTS were wonderful and I only wish I could have done a better job shooting the video. CUOTO
Fantastic video, Capt.Tim! Shout out to the Watch Sup and PO1 Bissonnette for giving you the tour. As an "Old Navy guy" and current Coast Guard Auxiliary member, your comment about them adding a Human Element in the job make us all a maritime family struck home for me, Shipmate. Well Done, Capt. BZ-CUOTO!
Thank you for watching Glenn. This video should have done much more than it has. I think I should have titled it better. I think many more people would like but don't know what it is to click on it. CUOTO
Great job Tim! And an even better job to VTS…. They’re the unsung heroes of the Harbor…looks like they finally got their song!! Keep up the good work, both of you!! #CUOTO
I'm now too old. But, I used to fly airplanes and drive boats on the west coast, I'm familiar with ATC and always wondered how the VTS worked. Thanks for the information. My neighbor is just getting his first large boat and I have passed along your channel. You are a great resource. Thank you!
Tim, thanks for getting us behind the scenes at VTS! Years ago, while I was getting my instrument rating for single engine aircraft, I took a long tour of the Indianapolis air traffic control center, a dark large room full of screens and controllers. It was so valuable for me, as a pilot, to know what the folks on the other end of the radio are doing to keep us safe up in the air. Keep up the great work!
Cap, I can tell you were very excited, and it is difficult to do, but during your interview, talk less, listen more. Great video, thanks for the good work.
Oh Michael..... Guilty as charged. If I could only go back in time.... But I do hope to better the next time. Thank you for watching and for your feedback. CUOTO
Fantastic. Simply fantastic. Thanks for yet another great video captn. Watching this while pushing 2 loaded hoppers reaching #10 buoy, Coney Island Channel “Norton Point” and about to call traffic. How ironic huh?!
Nice. As USCG RM back in the day knew a few guys previously stationed on GI. Come a LONG way in tech generally. So much so the whole rate was changed in the 90s. This FCPO was very accommodating.
Thank you for watching. Media Day just for me. They brought their own photographer in and because I was having a multitude of technical problems, someone asked if they could help and help one of my cameras. CUOTO
Tim that was great, iIwork with sea scouts in San Francico in Califorina and we take the scouts to VTS each year and i still find it fascinating thanks for the great video of a different VTS and for asking some great questions
Wow, how would we know all that is involved, thanks Captain for a great visit video with some very helpful people. Technology plays an important part, but the magnet chart is there for back up if needed. You mentioned military piers and it reminded me of our entering there when I was onboard a destroyer ,home port of Newport,R.I. I remember taking a picture of the S.O.L. off our port side, still have that pic, that was in the early sixties. So,that's where we were, thanks for making it come back to me again. I really enjoyed the video, thank you. Stay safe and well.
Thank you Sir; for show this operation VTS , now I understanding how ship traveling rout, with out V T S boat and ship will bump each other, this is clear out of my mind how boat and ship run like car on the street, thank a gain, deeply respect from me to you Sir 2 T up .
Coolest thing ever when she revealed the magnetic map board!!!!! Why was that hiding??? Oh i would play with it. I would put magnetic poetry words on it…. Oh… this is why it was hiding. 😂😂😂
What a great inside look at this vital operation. Thank you for bringing it to us! Thank you to the entire USCG for always going above and beyond to keep us safe!
In the early 2000s I was on a flight, and my seat mate was a pilot being ferried to a plane in our destination. I had a hand held GPS, a Garmin, and was tracking the flight in real time. The pilot said that gizmo was better than what they flew with in the cockpit, and he was going to get one for his flight bag, as a backup...He also showed the Rand McNalley street map atlas he carried so he could point out interesting sights to his passengers.
My hat’s off. I had no idea there was such good, organized control in the harbors. This was very informative and fun for me. I know a lot about ATC, so this makes sense to me. Thank’s Tim for showing us all of this, and the time it took you to set it up and go over there.
What a great video, Captain! This brought an entirely new perspective to your operation and how the Coast Guard (with the civilians) use the radio and cameras at VTS! I was completely absorbed by this and enjoyed it immensely! This was a field trip I'm glad I was able to see. My hat's off to you and everyone at VTS! Very professional! CUOTO
Thanks Tim, nice to see it all and how it works. Thanks for the service men and women to show their work. I have done this work in my country.. and it’s quite te same. Only the centers have more authority then in the USA. They can tell you where to go or hold . Freaking awesome is the magnetic board as a back up. Thats something .
Excellent and most informative video. You did a great job and obviously had a good time. As a recreational boater and life long sailor I have enjoyed your UA-cam channel. The Coast Guard is to be commended on the part they play in keeping our harbors and waterways safe. Keep up your good wirk, Gil
I've been waiting a long time for this one Capt. Tim. Great job, it was well worth the wait! Thank you and thanks to VTS for doing a great job by keeping the mariners and waterways safe!! #COUTO
Thanks for that one captain. 25 minuets went by like 25 seconds. Knowledge is such a wonderful gift. I tip my hat to those at the CG that pulled the strings to make it happen, and of course a hat tip with a bow to you and the crew that yank the ropes.
TU for the tour, Tim. USCG is unique in the US Services in cycling officers (except specialists like pilots or legal) thru all facets of the service: Icebreakers, lightships, rescue, testing & development, admin, logistics, VTS, even PR. I had two different T&D Officers on that lighthouse automation in the 60's, which I've mentioned. Little wonder why USCG gets more funding every year than they request. JL
Great video on the workings of VTS and kudos to VTS for the job that they manage!! Have a son n law that tends to ships in Houston and a couple of neighboring ports and your videos kind of back fill on all that needs to be done with the ships as they come in and off load, on load and head back out to sea. Thanks!!
Wow, I'm not a US citizen (Kiwi / New Zealander) and not even remotely related to the maritime industry (I'm in the regulatory side of the building industry) however I found this thoroughly interesting! Cheers Tim for fantastic content and a huge cheers to the staff at USCG for allowing you to share this with your audience!
Thanks for taking us inside the traffic control center. I had your channel come up for a suggestion for me most likely because I follow What's going on with Shipping. One thing from me as a suggestion, I thought that you were not letting the other person (Bissonnette) finish talking, you would ask him to explain something and he would start taking but then after a second or two you would start taking over him,not sure if it was excitement or just something that you do on your tug being in charge. Perhaps you need to practice and do like you would when you're communicating on the radio. Another interesting and informative video. Thank you Tim
Thank you for watching Tim. Yeah, I was pretty excited to have got there. Not being the amazing orator, Dr Sal, (He is so good!) I am but a mere Tugboat operator. I also had two cameras die and my digital audio recorder die that day, so I was less then perfect. 😂 I hope you still found some value in an inside look at a secure military facility. CUOTO
@TimBatSea No worries, Skipper. And yes, I was surprised that you got as much information out of them that you did,and it was nice to see them actually opening up and not playing the High Security card. And I can only imagine how much work is involved with Your artistic outlet ,or however it was that you said your boss said it. And even more involved when you go out filming and doing interviews and thinking how it is from our the viewers perspective while operating cameras etc. You did a fine job,and I will be coming back and watching more of your channel. Thank you sir.
Tim: That is an awesome video, God bless the Coast Guard men and women that do a fabulous job. Thank you for bringing the information out for the public to see and understand. As I once told you I was a CGAuxiliary watchstander at Fire Island for 9 years and I loved every minute of it, I MISS IT
That was so interesting, the Coast Guard is doing a terrific job protecting all of us,. Next up should be FDNY's fireboats - they are welcoming than you think
Include considering an inside view of the Staten Island Ferries operation too. Big boats with high traffic right down the spine of the upper New York harbor.
That was awesome! Would have liked to see what you were catching on the GoPro closeups. Thumbs up to the controllers as well for their hospitality. I know some of that stuff can be off limits to the general public for security reasons. Thanks for showing. ✌️🤙😎🍺
Thank you for watching Perry. Yes, I had a bunch of things go wrong for me and lost some great footage and audio. But you do the best with what you have, and that's what I gave you. I have ordered new gear after this debacle. Lol. CUOTO

Tim you say "Stat Nyland" like a local!!! Great video.
Lol. Thank you for watching Artie. CUOTO
As long as he say's Taylor Ham and not Pork Roll when he comes to the Jerzey side lol😉
Reminds me of the Dispatch center back at the Sheriff's Department. Always appreciate the hard work they did for us on the road.
Yes Doug. They do great work at VTS. CUOTO

It was a fun day at VTS. Thank you for watching

I never cease to be amazed at how much goes on behind the scenes with barge management. This channel has opened my eyes to reality.
That makes me so happy. Thank you for watching. CUOTO

I appreciate that Cliff! Thank you very much. CUOTO

CUOTO
USCG is a class act, imho. It looks like their New York Sector keeps a lot of balls in the air and does it well.
Thank you for watching Bill. I couldn't agree with you more. CUOTO
As a former U.S.C.G. member I was highly appreciated this videos, though I enjoy them all.
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Thanks for reminding us to check out this video. Very cool. Thanks!
Thank you for checking it out. CUOTO
Fantastic. Simply fantastic. Thanks for yet another great video captn. Watching this while pushing 2 loaded hoppers reaching #10 buoy, Coney Island Channel “Norton Point” and about to call traffic. How ironic huh?!
😂😂😂 Thank you very much for watching Anderson. Welcome to the channel. CUOTO
Really cool place and great staff.. VTS Rocks!!!
Thank you for wathing watching Mark. I completely agree. CUOTO
Nice. As USCG RM back in the day knew a few guys previously stationed on GI. Come a LONG way in tech generally. So much so the whole rate was changed in the 90s. This FCPO was very accommodating.
My mistake he’s a Chief. Also interesting the way there were at least two PAs or I saw around videoing and taking still images. Media day?
Thank you for watching. Media Day just for me. They brought their own photographer in and because I was having a multitude of technical problems, someone asked if they could help and help one of my cameras. CUOTO
This. Was. EXCELLENT!!! What a blast seeing behind the scenes! The best part, though, was your enthusiasm! I loved this. Terrific job, Capt!
Thank you for watching Laura. I was very excited and wish I had let them talk more. But I waas just a fanboy. LOL. CUOTO
Great tour of the nuts and bolts for traffic control. Everyone involved are total pros. Great work by the coast guard.
Yes. I absolutely agree. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Tim that was great, iIwork with sea scouts in San Francico in Califorina and we take the scouts to VTS each year and i still find it fascinating thanks for the great video of a different VTS and for asking some great questions
Thank you very much for watching Michael. CUOTO
That was amazing, informative, and very interesting! Thanks to you, and them!
Thank you for watching Steph. CUOTO
Really interesting to see the off camera side of what goes on in your work. Thanks for the field trip.
Thank you for watching Kyle. CUOTO
Great Tim… love it. Thanks to you and USCG for allowing you access to film this
Thank you for watching David. It was a real pleasure to be allowed access to VTS and a fun day shooting. CUOTO
I love this video, I have been to the River Thames VTS and had a look around their control room, great stuff , very interesting it was to.
Thank you for watching Brian. I would love to check our your VTS one day. CUOTO
Thank you for watching Jame and thank you for your service. CUOTO
This video was so awesome! Thanks for putting this together!
Thank you very much for watching Cliff! It was very fun to make. CUOTO
I only saw this after your most recent video Tim when you mentioned it existed. Great tour and thankyou for the effort.
Thank you for watching. It was a fun video to make. CUOTO
Thank you Sir; for show this operation VTS , now I understanding how ship traveling rout, with out V T S boat and ship will bump each other, this is clear out of my mind how boat and ship run like car on the street, thank a gain, deeply respect from me to you Sir 2 T up .
Thank you for watching. I appreciate your kind words. CUOTO
Outstanding information!
Thank you very much for Arthur. CUOTO
Coolest thing ever when she revealed the magnetic map board!!!!! Why was that hiding??? Oh i would play with it. I would put magnetic poetry words on it…. Oh… this is why it was hiding. 😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂 That would be hilarious! Thank you for watching. CUOTO
What a great inside look at this vital operation. Thank you for bringing it to us! Thank you to the entire USCG for always going above and beyond to keep us safe!
Thank you for watching Steve. CUOTO
😂 That's great! Thank you for watching. CUOTO
My hat’s off. I had no idea there was such good, organized control in the harbors. This was very informative and fun for me. I know a lot about ATC, so this makes sense to me. Thank’s Tim for showing us all of this, and the time it took you to set it up and go over there.
Thank you very much for watching. CUOTO
CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching Randy. I was very lucky to be allowed to shoot this video.
Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Very interesting video, Loved the old school charts.
Thank you for giving this one a try. CUOTO
Excellent and most informative video. You did a great job and obviously had a good time. As a recreational boater and life long sailor I have enjoyed your UA-cam channel. The Coast Guard is to be commended on the part they play in keeping our harbors and waterways safe. Keep up your good wirk, Gil
Thank you very much for watching and for the kind words Gil. CUOTO
That was Awesome Tim! You look like a kid in a candy store! LOL 🤣 Thanks to the USCG. And you for sharing! CUOTO! 😎👍⚓
Thank you for watching Rick! It was so much fun there! CUOTO!
I've been waiting a long time for this one Capt. Tim. Great job, it was well worth the wait! Thank you and thanks to VTS for doing a great job by keeping the mariners and waterways safe!! #COUTO
Thank you very much for watching. It was a lot fun to make and those people are are too shelf! CUOTO
Thanks for that one captain. 25 minuets went by like 25 seconds. Knowledge is such a wonderful gift. I tip my hat to those at the CG that pulled the strings to make it happen, and of course a hat tip with a bow to you and the crew that yank the ropes.
Thank you very much for watching and for the kind words Mel. CUOTO
Thanks for doing this! It’s always great to learn more. Thanks to the team there for their hard work. Glad our harbors are in such capable hands.
Thank you for watching Stephen. CUOTO
Very enjoyable and informative video. Thanks for my new learned knowledge.

Thanks for the video, it's like finding the wizard behind the curtain.
😂😂😂 I think you are correct. Thank you for watching Adam. I hope this helps the next time you call in. Be safe and I'll CUOTO.
JL
Thank you for watching John. CUOTO
Great video on the workings of VTS and kudos to VTS for the job that they manage!! Have a son n law that tends to ships in Houston and a couple of neighboring ports and your videos kind of back fill on all that needs to be done with the ships as they come in and off load, on load and head back out to sea. Thanks!!
Thank you for watching Stephen. CUOTO
Cool. I’ve always wondered what and how VTS worked. Nice video Tim.CUOTO.
Thank you very much for watching Jerome. CUOTO
Excellent! Thank you so much!
Thank you very much for watching John. CUOTO
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel Heath. Please consider subscribing. I try to post new content every Tuesday. CUOTO
CUOTO
@TimBatSea No worries, Skipper.
Very well done. Thank you.
Thank you for watching Ed. CUOTO
Thanks Tim, very informative.
Thank you very much for watching! CUOTO
Nice to see the New York VTS👌, I also work in a VTS station in the Netherlands
ua-cam.com/video/9XesDHkXPz8/v-deo.htmlsi=Jw7aw8jKGpyInYix

Thank you very much Marie. It sure was fun getting the opportunity to make this video. CUOTO
Tim: That is an awesome video, God bless the Coast Guard men and women that do a fabulous job. Thank you for bringing the information out for the public to see and understand. As I once told you I was a CGAuxiliary watchstander at Fire Island for 9 years and I loved every minute of it, I MISS IT
Thank you very much Brian. CUOTO
Thank you Tim. As always great entertainment and fine schoolin' combined, presented by a
Master Mariner and Seadog.
Thank you very much for watching Tom. CUOTO
Absolutely fantastic Tim, if possible please pass my (and others) thanks on to the guys there who made this all possible.
Thank you for watching Mike! I most certainly will. CUOTO
That was so interesting, the Coast Guard is doing a terrific job protecting all of us,. Next up should be FDNY's fireboats - they are welcoming than you think
Great idea Ed. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Include considering an inside view of the Staten Island Ferries operation too. Big boats with high traffic right down the spine of the upper New York harbor.
Great job Tim excellent video
Thank you very much Adam. CUOTO
Very interesting Tim. Thanks
Thank you for watching William. CUOTO
Can't wait for this Tim! I'm upset that I wasn't on watch on Tuesday to be there for this. I'm sure it's going to be great!
Mike! I missed you brother! I'm sure you things will look familiar to you. CUOTO
@@TimBatSea oh I'm sure of it.
Tim, The VTS visit was done well the audio at the beginning was a little low but it improved and the info was great!
Thank you for watching Art. CUOTO
Nice dude interesting look inside.
Thank you for watching. Those guys are awesome! CUOTO
Very cool! Great interview! I got a tour back in 2005, but don't remember much, so I love the refresher. I can't believe i forgot the puck board!
That was not my first time there either, but the first time I saw the puck board as well. Thank you for watching. CUOTO
Lol. CUOTO
