I Honestly Believe Postecoglou Can Take Tottenham To The Champions League This Season

  • I made a comment over on Twitter yesterday to suggest that, despite the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, I felt Tottenham have a live chance of making it into the Champions League this season under Ange Postecoglou. The response to my call was divided to say the least.
With that in mind, I thought today's video should focus on that call from me and act as an attempt to put a little bit more meat on the bone as to my theory regarding Spurs' newly appointed Australian gaffer. It's not a perfect science, I'm not usually one for making bold calls at all, let alone this early into a league season but I just feel as though there are solid reasons to believe that the former Celtic boss may be a match made in heaven with Tottenham, both in the short and long-term.
    Cheers,
    Dan

Been a Celtic fan since the early 80's. Ange is without a doubt the best coach the club has had in my time. He could have written himself into the fabric of the club but he chose to leave us far too early.
My only doubt for Spurs is his transfer dealings at a higher level. He was quite reliant on his knowledge of the J League & he recruited successfully from that market.
Celtic fans like Spurs demand good football. Ange Ball is nothing like I've seen before. It defies logic defensively but it works. The opposition struggles to maintain the pace for 90 minutes. You'll find Spurs will score a lot of late goals. It's not about superstars or one player. It's all about work ethic & energy. Kane will be a loss but far less so within this system. Players will come in and out of the team but performance levels will not drop.
All the best to Spurs & Ange. See you in the Champions League next year. Hail Hail!

That lack of pace you mentioned already showed up in the last Tottenham game vs United. During the final 20 minutes of the second half, Man United looked absolutely knackered and Tottenham seized the chance, scoring the 2nd goal and ending the game.

I'm a Celtic fan too and another thing to think about is how Ange expects 100% in training and on the pitch which can lead to a far few injures and if the squad isn't full with capable players it can lead to issues later on in the season, particularly in the Premier league where there are no easy games. Wish him all the best though and I hope he proves every doubter wrong!

Losing Kane is a blessing. He may score goals, but he never won anything. His LGBTQBS stuff he took to the World Cup ensured England were going to be constantly distracted. It was never enough for Harry to just captain England. His ego is damaged by fear añd Ange would not have enjoyed working with the mentally tarnished Harry LGBTFirst Kane

Great content great insight mate. As an Aussie that has admired Ange for many years I can tell you he has incredible ambition, drive and a football brain second to none. Privately he will be plotting to win the premier league. He will have no doubt his system can do it. He is already stock piling young amazingly talented kids that are fast, coachable and will run through brick walls for him. ( Prima donnas no matter how good get punted out ) Watch what happens in about season three when most of these kids come of age at the same time playing under his system. By then he will of developed the weapon that can combat and beat the clubs spending the squillins on drop in superstars. Gosh its nearly enough to make you want to follow Spurs ; )

I hope that happens but you're forgetting about Levy. Pochettino got to UCL final and then levy refused to buy a player for two windows pretty much. Guardiola has said you need to refresh a squad every season to keep players on their toes but if Postecoglou gets to Champions League then he'll think "good enough" let's save some money instead of thinking if they buy from a position of strength it will cost less and they'll have access to better players. Pochettino didn't really fight Levy too much and I can see Postecoglou not fighting either but just walking away. I do think because hes already playing football the fans want that Levy might have to be careful as Postecoglou will fast become a fan's favourite so hopefully he'll back him just to not have every supporter against him

    • @mattb9144
      @mattb9144 Рік тому

@@chriswoodley23 That is a fair call however Ange's trade ins will be moneyball style picks. He is incredible finding youngsters with talent that fit the system that he then moulds. I would be very surprised with a 50mill. or above spend on any player in the next 24 months.
You certainly know more about Levy and how he operates than I. That being said your point of Ange becoming fan favourite will be interesting. The adoration for him at Celtic was like nothing i've seen for a coach before.
That brings a lot of power.

@@mattb9144 apparently the stadium was rocking at the man Utd game and that hasn't happened for a while and it's because Ange has them playing attacking football that the fans want so I'm hoping too that Levy is forced to back him because he is just too popular with the fans to not back him. I remember reading lots of Celtic fans saying they'd actually watch Spurs because of Postecoglou and thinking it's maybe just because they've lost a successful manager but everything about him from the tactics to the press conferences to the quotes from the players (Bissoma has basically said he loves him already and he's been MotM for first two games) show he's a special manager. Apparently he was 4th choice behind Naglesman, Company, Slott and Xabi Alonso but I think Levy might have stumbled into hiring the perfect manager at the right time. (He was actually funny in one of his press conferences when asked about not being first choice he said something like "I was probably about 6th choice mate but I'm here now).
At worst I feel like when it all clicks some players will want to come to Spurs just because they want to play in a fun system. Surely as a player, especially an attacking one, you want to play football that's fun rather than being shouted at by Conte because you dared to pass forward?
Parataci who was (kind of still is) the director of football has generally bought well, but I hope Ange has some say about who to bring in as that seems like one of his key skills.
Levy hates spending money (and tbf whenever Spurs spend big they buy poorly, Richardlison, Ndomble, Lo Celso, Davidson Sanchez all cost over £40m). We actually tend to do better at the 15-35m mark for players so if Ange is allowed freedom to buy his own players (say at least 1-2 per window that he identifies and the DoF buys the others) then hopefully he'll have a team he wants

I fully agree with your view that the potential is there for Spurs to have some qualified success under Ange this season. As an Australian I am naturally considered to be biased by some, but that is OK. Ange is down to earth, knows what he wants and how to get it, of that there is no question! His man-management skills are second to none. If you followed the path on how he rebuilt a Celtic Club in crises, you will understand. There are many problems at Tottenham which are very similar to those he faced at Celtic at the time. Given the means and the time, he will succeed. Just for those who may not know. Ange came to Celtic on his lonesome self, without any entourage. Celtic had just lost the league to Rangers to the tune of 24 points, no less! The whole club was in uproar with the relationship between the board and fans "stormy" to put it lightly and a demoralised and skeletal playing squad. To make it short, Ange rebuilt all that was broken and ended up winning the league in style plus one of the Scottish cups in his first year. All that on a shoestring budget! In his second year he managed an amazing treble. On leaving for Spurs, he left behind a strong and capable playing squad and the club in a wonderful financial position.

It's so refreshing seeing these kinds of takes from the other fans. I dream of Ange to have massive success here at Spurs, it would genuinely hurt if it doesn't work.
But, with that being said, I personally want to avoid too much expectations going into this season. Our first two games were quite good in terms of performance and what we're trying to do, but the most important thing for us this season is to play attractive football, and show some promising signs for the future. At least that's what I'm hoping to see from our team, considering we're finally in the process of the 'painful rebuild' that Poch foreshadowed some years ago.
I just want this team and its fanbase to unite again under the leadership of Ange. Hopefully, wherever we finish by the end of the season, we can see an exciting team ready to get back to its very best again.

Strangely enough Kane moving on was probably the best thing to happen to Postecoglu for 2 reasons:
#1. Immediately it takes the pressure off of immediate achievements; having someone of Harry Kane’s stature demands success, however being able to focus on the rebuild without a need for things to click right away can only help.
#2. Because of Harry Kane’s stature and style of play, Spurs were able to get away with (for quite some time) not having to have a systemic style or attacking strategy. Without Kane, Postecoglu can actually focus on building the team on the style that brought him success at Celtic; bringing in Maddison has been a huge example of how the central midfielders are going to be able to find space and create chances.
Is going to be a fun watch!

I've followed every step in Ange's career since he managed my team Brisbane Roar more than 10 years ago and I've been watching his first two months at Spurs very closely.
I expect Spurs at the very least to make it into the top 4 this year, but they could surprise everyone and push Man City & Arsenal for the top.
Is that controversial? I have many reasons that lead me to this prediction, some of which you cover in your video. However, there will be two big challenges that could disrupt their ability to get into the top 4:
    1. Ange needs a strong finish to the transfer window (needs to ship out a lot of unwanted players, bring in 2 or 3 more players for depth in key positions)
    2. He needs key players Bissouma, Maddison, Romero, VDV & Vicario to stay fit
If both of these points come to fruition, I genuinely believe Spurs will have an unforgettable season.

As a Spurs fan, I can honestly say that I am genuinely excited for the first time in 3yrs. Now, this will anger both the media and most fans of other clubs, as I’m supposed to be in a depressive slumber, given Kane’s gone 😂
Kane was a great goalscorer, but he was also part of the problem. Let me explain. The narrative was, that ‘Kane had to leave Spurs to win trophies’. However, this is to ignore the fact that Spurs gave Kane the opportunity to do that - but he never turned up for us.
To be honest, the whole ‘will he, won’t he’ had bored Spurs fans to death. It became all the media ever wanted to talk about and that disrespects the other members of the team. Just look at how happier they look now that it’s no longer just about Harry Kane.
The uncomfortable truth, is that Kane isn’t a winner. He isn’t ruthless enough, both for club and for country. That isn’t a view born out of bitterness, but out of fact. In those pivotal, career defining moments, Kane has always been found wanting. He doesn’t get the job done.
He also isn’t a leader. Or a captain. By his own admission, he wants to have a nice civil conversation with the referees. Did you ever see Terry, Vieira or Keane wanting to be all chummy with the ref? Absolutely no chance. They wanted to win so much that they’d tear that ref to pieces!
No one can deny Kane’s goal scoring ability. But being a winner in football is about so much more than that. I am so glad that he is no longer attached to this club; a part of the problem has now gone and the club will be stronger for it.
And by the way, getting £120m for a 30yo with 9mths on his contact is absolutely hilarious 😂 I can’t stand Levy (none of us can) but he does have a knack of rinsing some clubs.

Kane shouldn't have started the Champions League final, Moura scored a hat-trick in the semi and Kane wasn't fully fit. It would have been better to bring him on at half time or later on in the game so you can't really blame him for that.
I think he'll do very well at Bayern. They really do have one of the better squads in the Champions League this year on paper at least. Maybe they're missing a high level GK but their defence is good, midfield they have experience and out wide some exciting players and have younger guys like Museala (sp?), Tel and Gravenberch and De Ligt are still young too. Kane seems like he can play until he's in his mid to late 30s as he'll just move deeper as he gets older but it's a lot of money to gamble on basically winning the UCL in next 3 seasons.
The fee Spurs got for him was great although money into Spurs doesn't ever fill me with any confidence as it could end up not being spent or used to buy awful players although I believe Postecoglou has a good eye for a player so wouldnt have too many transfer failures. I don't think it's that bad he's left though as it was starting to be the only thing people talked about and now expectations won't be as high and potentially it gives Postecoglou some money to reinvest
I know a lot of Spurs fans seem to think Fabio Parataci shouldn't be anywhere near the recruitment process but I think he's generally bought well, Udogie, Vicario, Bentancur, Kulusevski, Romero all from the Italian league look good value for money and Bissoma, Porro, Maddison, Van de Ven are all solid with experience and room to improve (even if at around €50m Porro and VdV are probably a bit of an over pay)
The one signing which looks bad in hindsight is Richardlison, but that's still a pretty good success rate. Also I don't know what Parataci did wrong really? My understanding is that he over valued players when they were being loaned/traded so their sales would be more profitable for Juve, but a player is worth what a team will pay not how much a third party website like transfernarkt says someone is worth. Plus Spurs are up against oil and state funded teams we need someone who can bend the rules a bit to keep up. I hope he carries on basically being the DoF in a consultancy role as long as he buys players that Postecoglou wants and will improve the squad.
I don't know if Postecoglou has ever worked with a DoF as he seems to have a lot of control over that especially at Celtic from what i can tell, but I'm sure he has final say on any player over 21 at least who needs to be registered for the Premier League and maybe the younger guys like Philips and Veliz are "club signings", but I'm hoping he can work with Parataci. He's done well to transform the team but one injury to either CD and he has to play Sanchez, injuries to both and it's Dier and Sanchez (although if that happens he might as well try Philips or a youth player instead of Dier as he's too slow for such a high line). Hopefully the lack of European football this year means the squad isn't too stretched. I'm hoping for a League Cup win as that is the first trophy so if he can land that then whatever Kane wins he's won something before Kane inevitably wins the league

    • @imconfused1237
      @imconfused1237 Рік тому +1

@@chriswoodley23Yeah, Paratici is actually something of a genius when it comes to talent identification. He also - very importantly - has the network to make deals happen and a lot of fans seem to under appreciate that.
It’s not even just the 1st Team where Paratici has made an impact. He has literally overhauled the entire recruitment approach which, before he arrived, was described as ‘a bunch of amateurs’. Our scouting network is now vast.
You also see his influence in the youth ranks. Tottenham potentially has a ‘golden generation’ coming through. Paratici recognises this and, instead of losing this talent to other clubs, has worked to secure them. It’s work that goes unnoticed.
As for Richarlison, I was told by a very well connected source that this was a Levy deal brokered to the Dele Alli one. In short, Tottenham didn’t pay the fee publicly discussed. Probably still wasn’t cheap but not as high as some believe

I feel like it's partly the fee that's hanging over Richardlison at the moment and if he was say closer to £40m maybe going to £60m with add-ons people would be a bit more forgiving or patient with him especially considering someone like Hoijlund with basically 6 months in a top 5 league went for £70m and that Richardlison could play across the forward line so is in theory a decent squad option at least.
Wasn't aware of all the behind the scenes stuff like overhauling the scouting network, but I've seen some Spurs fans just saying to bin off Paratici which seems crazy to me. Like you say, he's got great contacts especially in the Italian league (which compared to somewhere like Portugal seems to have much better value). It takes time to set all that up so getting rid of him just means we'll go back to square one and have to do it all again which seems pointless.
To an extent as well you have to judge him when he's got rid of the mistakes from the previous era (Ndomble, Dier, Sanchez). All are on high wages which will put off most teams and makes it harder to bring in money and anybody else. The first choice midfield assuming it's Bissoma, Maddison and Bentancur would have cost less than one of Chelsea's big money midfield signings so given that financial disparity people need to give him some credit. Even if you add in Sarr its probably still around roughly the same price so 4 quality options for the price of one is pretty amazing

Although I wasn't one of the fans who had negative views on this appointment, without a doubt when I heard Tottenham were going to appoint Ange as manager "I was like",, WTF is Ange Posticoglu,,. But as soon as I looked into him and got a picture of who he is and how he plays I was sold within two video's of seeing him in action💯 his going to in my opinion create History with Tottenham Hotspur. As for all those who's opinion is that a manager who has never managed in a Quote Top European League, So then can't be looked at or suggested to be a top manager or coach I only have one word to say to say,, well two if you want to be politically correct,,, Arsen Wenger.. Nice video. Personally I think we're a little bit far off but the pieces are there. If this was the exact same squad but with 12 months under its belt with Ange then I'd have us nailed down 3rd or 4th but the team is almost entirely new and it's working under a new coach. There will undoubtedly be periods this season where we get battered and go on awful runs of form which will have us end up around 6th or 7th instead of 4th or 5th. With that said, after the last five years of totally dire football I'm just happy to have something I can get behind, even if it's still a little bit sloppy and rudimentary.

A microphone in his face -“Steve the premiership wot does that mean to you?”steve replied “10 months of misery”-I caught up with Steve 7 years later and reminded him-he said “in the event it was 8 months of misery for me as I was sacked 2 months before the seasons end”
