    SO adorable! I loved seeing this video. Just love cavvies so much!!!! When I got my first cav 11 years ago now, we had her in a doggy play pen in the family room at night, with her bed in there. I used to get up to her when she cried, put her on the couch , clean up her pen and heat up some puppy milk that the Breeder had recommended. Whilst she was lapping the milk I would switch out the light and she would go back to sleep. One night however, when I went to retrieve her from the couch she had disappeared and found her way into my bedroom! There she was on the big bed, running around madly, wagging her tail. I decided that 'just this one time' i would let her cuddle in with me for the rest of the night. She was a little angel and snuggled down with me. The next night we did the same routine with her doggy play pen and this time when i put her on the couch, she immediately ran into my bedroom with great excitement. That was the end of sleeping in the doggy play pen. She has slept with me since. Now she is a senior dog at over eleven years. I have a small set of wooden steps for her to use to climb up on the bed and she has her soft dog's bed on top of my bed. If it gets cold she comes over to me and lays up against me. I love her to bits. my darling Nellie. I am hoping she will live a few more years. I will be heart broken when she goes.

    I must pamper my dogs. They have soft blankets in their crate and the crate is spacious enough to lay out.
    Its nice how they all sleep in your room. Sweet.
    My Cav is more than happy to go into the crate at night. She is easy going like that, no problem. Cavaliers are so sweet🥰🐶❤️

    We had 3 cavs sleeping with us at one time and it was crowded! But unfortunately we are down to our last cav boy. But now we have a kitten that joins us in bed off and on throughout the night. I am close to being ready to adding another cav. The death of our sweet boy Cash nearly 2 years ago really was tremendously heartbreaking for all of us.

      If the crate is too big, the puppy will not let you know when she has to go out. She will just pee in one end of the crate, and go to sleep in the other end. Watch my crate training video: ua-cam.com/video/CdWR275LHio/v-deo.html

      @@chaskat35 well that makes a lot of sense and I love the training I watched it such adorable little puppies well the lady that I'm getting him from is actually litter box training them with rabbit pellets and I'm going to have that in my house so when it is in the middle of the night or it's blizzard outside he can go in that so I will look into a smaller crate I think that's a good idea thank you so much

    Interesting to see the night time routine. I believe dogs just continue doing what they know. I’ve never done a night time crate routine, just beds and they are free to stretch out and do what they want during the night. Also when Buddy was on the meds for MVD he was constantly thirsty so needed to drink and alert me during the night for toliet. Whatever works for them.
    Also, responded to past message. 😊

    My 12 y.o.cavalier girl Madison sleeps with me in my queen size bed. I have carpeted stairs by the bed and a safety barrier on her side of the bed that is 12 inches high for the full length of the bed. I wanted her protected. She sleeps on her side of the bed. Madison does move around from the top to the bottom of the bed and she snores loudly, has done that since she was a puppy, but I don't mind. I love her so much. She owns the house and the car. I just use them!

    Our dogs have always slept in our bedroom but no one in our bed--now we are down to one Cav (we lost our last Standard Poodle old lady-Almost 15 YO-last Jan.) and she slept in a crate until she was well house broken and used to the routine. Now--she goes out (in our fenced area), comes in and expects her very small treat--dances into her bed beside my side of the bed--and that's it for the night. Yes, you don't break a routine LOL. When we travel with her we try to maintain a similar routine--in our travel trailer where she knows her place in her bed under the table after her walk and a Charlie Bear (very small treat).'
    I loved seeing all the girls ready for bed--I miss having multiple dogs.

    I hope everyone had a pleasant sleep. My Chester is 5 months old today. He is doing really well with training. Chester sleeps with me at night. But I do use the crate when he needs to settle down for a nap or when I go out to lunch or shopping. It is a great way to keep him safe while I'm gone.

    Why don’t you have a blanket in the crates? They lay on the plastic bottom? I love your channel but am disappointed that the crated dogs looked too cramped and have no cushioning bedding.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому +1

      They love to be cramped. If I put them in a bigger crate, they just cuddle up in the corner. And if I put bedding in the crate, they bunch it up into a little pile. Better to use a soft toy - you might have noticed a big one in the crate with Apple and Barkley.

      as my grandfather stated, the dogs love cramming themselves together. we have days where the crates are open, and i personally find boo AND tag in the crate together, with the door wide open. plus, it is bedtime, so they sleep anyway. as for the crate pad, when we put them in, the dogs crumple them behind them and lay on the plastic part, disregarding the crate pad. with the pad in a ball in the back, it also gives them less space.

    Can I ask why you don’t put anything soft in the bottom of their cages?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому +1

      Several reasons:
      1. For the young puppies, a crate pad gives them something that will absorb their urine if their tiny bladders can't hold it all night. Without the pad, they will vocally let me know if they have to go out in the middle of the night.
      2. Older dogs will just bunch up the pad into a small heap, so I prefer to put a toy in with them.
      3. If any of the dogs bring fleas or ticks into the house with them, the crate pad will give them a friendly environment to live and reproduce.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to get back to me. Last question and then I promise I will leave you alone :) Until what age do you consider it still « normal » for a puppy to cry when they get in the crate ? It does feel like we’re going one step forward and one step backwards with crate training at the moment as our puppy seemed to like it at first and now he’s showing a bit more resistance to it... Also, how long should a puppy be sleeping during the day ? I feel guilty for leaving him for so long in the crate (never more than 2hours but at least 2/3 times a day which still means 6hours a day...) and I feel like he would be happier playing with us or spending time outside... However it seems like he’s getting a bit cranky towards the end of the afternoon, starting to bite and bark, and being not able to focus on anything at all. Could it be the lack of rest ?
    Thanks again !
    Jeanne

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 роки тому

      Crate training is a gradual process. At 10 weeks, they are in the crate for 2-3 hour intervals all day long, broken up by walks outside to do their business, and very brief supervised play. By the time they get to 4 months, they will probably be about where your puppy is now - 3 or 4 naps per day of 2-3 hours each. At 6 months, one or two naps a day are enough, and the puppy is free to walk around with you the rest of the day, as long as you are there to supervise.
      The crying when they go into the crate can be mitigated by making sure you give the puppy a treat every time he goes in, and giving him his meals in the crate.
      The crankiness could actually be from a lack of exercise. Try to get him out for a long walk or a good run around the yard in the afternoon.

    We have a 10 mo and a 5 mo old Cavs. The boys are doing great together and love playing together. They both do well in their individual crates but we would like to transition them into a shared crate so Moses (the youngest) may feel more secure and bark/cry less. What size crate would you recommend?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      For two dogs, you need at least a 13 inch by 22 inch crate. It looks kind of cramped to have 2 dogs in one that size, but they enjoy cuddling.

    Hi there,
    I hope you are doing well. I welcomed my 9 weeks cavalier puppy yesterday and Im over the moon - he’s just so perfect !!! We did crate training on the first day and our first night together went well, he whined for not even 1-2minutes before going to sleep. He woke up twice during the night at 2.30 and 5.30am, we brought him outside to pee/poop (which he did) and then he went right back to sleep. No accidents in the crate so far which I am really happy about !!!
    I have one question though, when he whines at night should we take him out or just be patient and wait for him to go back to sleep ? I saw you said in one of your videos that pups this age should be able to go through the night without peeing. Are we not giving him wrong habits if we give in everytime he cries..? Should we « push » him a bit further..?
    Thanks so much for your help !
    Jeanne & Spencer

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 роки тому

      My puppies go through the night at 9 weeks old only because I start crate training at 8 weeks. If your breeder didn't start crate training (most breeders don't), it will take a week or so to get him to that point.
      You should definitely let him out when he cries in the middle of the night, as long as you see that he pees and/or poops at that time. If he cries when you put him in the crate right after he has done his business, that's the time to tell him firmly to be quiet.

    • @jeanne3003
      @jeanne3003 2 роки тому

      @@chaskat35 Thanks a lot for getting back to me I reallhy appreciate it ! You're right our breeder hadn't started crate training when we got our puppy Spencer a few days ago, but the good news is that he's learning very fast and I can already see some improvements. We actually don't struggle at all with putting him in the crate at night or when we go out for short breaks during the day to make him used to being on his own. However, getting in the crate or in the puppy pen when we are in the house, going on with our day, is a different story. He will bark, whine and cry his lungs out. I always make sure he's gone out/has been fed so it's probably just an act he's pulling, probably just trying to get our attention but it's still very worrying/impressive to witness as we are very anxious for him to feel ok, and so we usually end up feeling powerless and frustrated... not knowing how to react. What would you recommend ? Also, what is your view on puppy pens ? We put him in there sometimes to play (never to nap), but he just doesn't show any interest in it, as he doesn't play on his own at all... he will only play with us ! So whenever we put him in, he starts crying...
      Thanks a lot again for all your tips and recommendations, it has been very helpful.
      Jeanne

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 роки тому

      I use a puppy pen when I have a whole litter of pups - they play with each other in there, and I will also start feeding them in it. But I make sure that I'm around to supervise them when they are penned, and I almost never put a single puppy in a pen. Better to have him in a crate, and give him some closely SUPERVISED play time in the kitchen or family room after he does his business outside. In nice weather, take the supervised play time outside.
      I would suggest you give a SMALL treat every time you put him in the crate. It will create positive associations with the crate, and eventually should lessen the crying and barking.

  • @jeanne3003
    @jeanne3003 3 роки тому

    Hi from France ! Thanks for your videos. Would you recommend placing the crate in our bedroom on the first night ? I'm worried our new puppy will be lonely and scared if we leave him alone in his crate in the living room but I've also read that sleeping with your dog, even in a crate, could create separation anxiety as they would get use to be with you 24/7. Thanks a lot in advance for your answer ! Jeanne

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      I think it's an absolute necessity to have the crate in the bedroom - at least for the first month or two. You have to be able to hear if he makes it known that he needs to go out in the middle of the night or early morning, so that he isn't forced to pee or poop in the crate.
      All of our dogs sleep in the bedroom, and the only problem they have with separation is to make a big fuss when they see us getting ready to go out. They want to go with us, but that's the case with just about every Cavalier.
      I hope all is well in France - we had a short vacation in Nice and Eze a few months ago, and it was marvelous. We were very favorably impressed by the way they handled COVID.
