- Arjun Erigaisi is now the undisputed #1 Indian chess player (and the #2 rated player in the world overall!) and to honor his rise to success we are looking at one of his best games vs Gukesh D where he absolutely obliterates Gukesh's solid Caro-Kann opening! Of course the Caro-Kann is a very popular opening system, but Arjun Erigaisi employs a shocking attacking idea to gain the upper hand against it in the 2023 Airthings Masters Tournament!
In the game Arjun Erigaisi opens 1.e4 and Gukesh responds with 1...c6 - the Caro-Kann Defense. From there Arjun heads for the Fantasy Variation with the move 3.f3, a very interesting choice, and soon Arjun found himself with "hanging pawns" on the e4 and d4 squares. From there Arjun played an early e4-e5, gaining space in the center and giving himself a "wedge" from which to start his future kingside attack.
The game continued and soon Arjun Erigaisi had the "Alekhine's Battery" with the queen and rooks on the open g-file, pointed right at the Black king! Of course Gukesh did everything he could to defend, and he even managed to stave off the attack for a while, but Arjun Erigaisi managed to maintain the pressure long into the game and in the end Gukesh was no match for Arjun on this particular day!

Not trading the knight for three pawns, and obtaining three connected passed pawns, was a missed opportunity for Gukesh indeed.
Yes a missed chance for sure, that would be a rediculous move to find though, maybe not "move of the year" territory but pretty close!

Yes I actually just published a video on it! That was a great game! I did it before seeing your comment haha, if Arjun has an interesting game tomorrow then I will try to cover his last game of the tournament, maybe some of his other games that I missed as well!
Arjun's an animal!
Yes he's incredible! Go Arjun!
A very sharp game. This Arjun is shaking things up in chess. Any stats on his record against Magnus or Alireza?
Oh that's a great question! Ok I know Magnus won 12-9 against Arjun in the 2024 Speed Chess Championships, that is all blitz and bullet obviously but I think it shows their playing strength, meaning Magnus is better but Arjun is getting close! I think Magnus also beat Hikaru and Alireza by bigger scores in that tournament (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) so Arjun really is getting close to Magnus level!
