  • This is my favorite bread to make because it is just so simple to make and is always delicious. It is not only the easiest I've ever made, but it is the most cost effective food you could possibly make. It costs me under $1 to make this loaf. And, did I mention it's delicious? It may not be sourdough but this tastes like a true artisan bread loaf.
    Ingredients:
    6 cups of flour
    3.5 tsp salt
    1 tsp active dry yeast
    3 cups of warm water (this helps activate the yeast, you want it warm not hot)
    1. mix everything together and cover overnight 12-18 hours
    2. warm up your dutch oven or casserole dish inside the oven while it preheats to 450°
    3. Once the oven is heated, gently shape the dough into a ball. You will want plenty of flour for dusting your counter, hands and dough ball. It is VERY STICKY! Let the ball drop into your dutch oven and cover
    4. bake for 40 minutes
    5. uncover your bread and bake 20 more minutes uncovered
    6. remove your bread from the pot and let cool on cooling rack or your counter
    7. cut and enjoy!
    You can leave this loaf out on the counter if you place it cut side down, or seal in a plastic baggy.

    I have a 5.5 quart dutch oven that I used. If yours is not marked like mine the formula to calculate capacity is (pi x radius squared) x height. divide this number by 57.75. If using a larger DO it may come out flatter because of the larger diameter, but should still be delicious. Let me know if you've used a different size and how it turned out!

    If you have guests, don’t worry about any leftovers. This bread will be gone. I made this for some appetizer dips this Thanksgiving and everyone went crazy for it.
    As it was baking everyone kept commenting on how great it smelled. And everyone was really impressed when I took it out of the oven. They all said this was the best bread they ever had.
    Also, this was the first time I had ever made it. My wife asked “how long have you known how to do this?”

      @@house_of_cruz LOL Your message made my day! I happily baked non-stop to have loaves for our Christmas party yesterday and everyone was buttering like crazy all day, even during the actual meal. No one ever met a fresh loaf of hot bread that they didn't like, including my 3 tall fellas and my soon to be daughter-in-law. Such fun! Happiest of Holidays - Safe and peaceful. And Thanks again.

    That looks so yummy. When you cut it, it sounded so crunchy. Your little one is so adorable helping you mix up the dough. A future baker in the making. I can't wait to make one for my family. Thank you for sharing.

    I cannot wait to try your bread recipe, but I have a question about the warm water. What temperature should the water be? I have heard that if it's not warm enough, the yeast won't "bloom." If the water is too warm, the yeast will die. Is there a temperature range that I should aim for? Thank you!

    • @house_of_cruz
      @house_of_cruz  6 місяців тому +1

      That's true! Aim for between 95-105°F

    Do you bread flour or unbleached white flour. This recipe seems large enough for 2 loaves of bread.

    • @house_of_cruz
      @house_of_cruz  7 місяців тому +1

      Just regular unbleached flour. This is a large loaf! I have a large(ish) Dutch oven so I needed to have a larger loaf so it wouldn't come out flat. If you have a smaller Dutch oven (3 qrt), you will need to halve the recipe.

    There are some recipes very similar to this that call for a rest period of anywhere from 3-6 hours. Would that be sufficient for this recipe also?

    • @house_of_cruz
      @house_of_cruz  7 місяців тому +1

      No, that is not a long enough rise time, at least for this recipe. The key for a light loaf is: little yeast, long rise, and sticky dough.
      Remembering to mix it the night before is the HARDEST part!

    • @chrisblanc663

      @@chrisblanc663you can use sourdough starter instead of yeast. I mixed it around 8 pm before work, peaked on it around 5 am and meant to put it in the fridge but forgot. I left it till that evening around 5 pm and it baked really nice. A little sour like sourdough but super soft! 😊

    • @house_of_cruz
      @house_of_cruz  7 місяців тому +2

      The Dutch oven traps the moisture and bakes the inside of the loaf before you take the lid off and bake on that crunchy crust. You can try using an oven safe 5 qt pot with foil wrapped tightly as a lid, or try a round casserole dish with a lid.
      Let us know how it turns out!

    • @house_of_cruz
      @house_of_cruz  7 місяців тому

      You will want at least a 5 qt dutch oven. If you have a smaller size like a 3.5 qt, you can simply halve this recipe.

    @dgallag339 7 місяців тому

    So I made the dough yesterday (2/17) and just took it out to form and bake. It looked a lot like yours but it was very loose and would not form a ball, any ideas?

    • @house_of_cruz
      @house_of_cruz  7 місяців тому

      This can happen when there is too much liquid/ not enough flour. Did you bake it? I'd love to know how it turned out. I have miss counted and mixed up the measurements so many times using this recipe (I'll blame the kids) and it ALWAYS turns out!
      Just add some more flour to it while you are forming it and drop it in your Dutch oven, even if it doesn't hold shape, it should bake well.

    • @dgallag339
      @dgallag339 7 місяців тому

      @@house_of_cruz well I used a couple of bench scrapers and plopped it onto a piece of parchment and into the Dutch oven. It didn’t rise up as much but seemed edible.

    If you put the loaf in a baggie wrap it in paper towels to absorb the moisture and it will not get soft
