Splendid. I honestly can't think of anything better than this at the moment.
JustinGuitar, this is amazing, so informative, so personable, please do these more and more. Thank you.
When I was 14 - I am now 55 - an older friend took me to see Stefan Grappelli. At the time the guitarists in the band were John Etheridge and Ike Issacs (I think it was Issacs, definitely Etheridge). That gig changed my life. I started having lessons with a jazz guitarist very shortly after.
Over the years I have seen many great artists in a variety of contexts but nothing affected me the way those acoustic musicians did that night. Beautiful, heartfelt sounds.
great conversation to listen to . Thank you.
Great interview Justin. Martin sure knows his stuff. Thumbs up!
Thanks Martin, and Justin for the good questions.
I don't think Martin mentioned this, but what I've noticed is that the bent notes in gypsy jazz solos seem to occur on the b9 (bending up to the 9th) or the b6 (bending up to the 6th). Just something I've noticed. Maybe it's because they use a lot of minor6, minor69, major6, and major69 chords in gypsy jazz? Just an observation. Seems like that part of the harmony (the 6ths and 9ths) are extremely important, or at least they were tones that Django and Grappelli really gravitated towards
Awesome interview, a mountain of information here.
Like man y of the greats Martin just gets better with age and becomes more humble and passionate about the music and more generous with his knowledge as he ages..
really top interview...martin taylor is a great ambassador for our instrument
I've never heard of Martin before and even though I've read about Django and listened to some tunes, I still don't know much about it, but this discussion was very interesting and inspiring. And looks like Martin is one really nice fellow.
Great interview Justin. I had you as a tutor many years ago at the institute and you were a great teacher. You're Justin Guitar series is great and keep up the wonderful work. Also try listening to Jimmy Rosenberg, who is a dutch gypsy jazz player and is amazing. Cheers
great interview Justin good job mate! Robin
Thank you Robin! Hope to meet you next year!
Very interesting and informative I learned much thank you both!
Great information and introduction to gypsy jazz. Loved it!
Absolutely Fantastic
Joscho Stephan deserves a mention!
Joscho Stephan is on the frontline of gypsy jazz at the moment.
I find him quite outstanding.

He mentioned Stochelo Rosenberg you should also listen to his cousin Jimmie Rosenberg a troubled man but one of the best

Thank you for turning me onto Oscar Marcelo Alemán, gentlemen! Amazing.
the closest to django for me is the very young lagrene, fapy lafertin, dorado schmitt or ninine and i am sure there are a bunch more out there you hardly hear of. stochelo is more like the modern shred, like josho stephan. jazz manouche has a gazillion of great players and evry years theres anothers big talented youngster out there
Magnifique !!!!!
DJANGO's legacy is still alive , rich and strong ......and can match with the finesr classics . Listen to Bach to Django . ...when
the quatuor ANOUMAN meets the gypsy guitar played by JEROME BRAJTMAN .
Did anyone mention Closest to Django is poss Fapy Lafertin - contemporary Adrien Moignard - Rocky Gresset
Fapy is the closest to Django...i agree.
Two more greats: Tchavolo Schmitt and Angelo DeBarre. Also would add Tchan Tchou Vidal and Moreno and Lollo Meier
The closest to django is a long way away
Check out Angelo Debarre too!
justin check out wawau adler. his right hand tehnique is perfect
Great discussion. I saw you Martin in NYC (Blue Note) accompanying Stephen Grapelli. Was a long back. Early 90's maybe. Was a great show. It was a thrill to see Stephen. He was in the twilight of his life and played wonderfully.
Where can I see the new arrangements of the Django tunes he was talking about?
Why the heck doesnt he play the Manouche guitar???
Probably because they are very tone specific and not so versatile. A manouche guitar has a very specific tone that doesn't do other styles of jazz well whereas Martin plays a wider range and gypsy jazz is not his main style.
I was wondering if he plays either a Martin or a Taylor guitar :D And then this. What the hell is a Vanden? :D
C Fucking GP! :)
He forgot the term “ Manouche”
28:36
He should be playing a Martin or a Taylor guitar lol :p
Hoss Cartwright lol that's exactly what i was going to say
are you aware that boring joke is on every single of his videos?
HELLO BONANZA 1967
Nice twist
Exactly!
Martin Taylor name sounds very much like Bentley Ferrari
Gypsy = just a few simple Chords? My ass! 😯🎶😣🎇
Down votes. Really now? Great video!
420th like whoooooo
In case people don't know I would just like to bring up the fact that the word "Gypsy" can actually be offensive and incorrect, the correct term is "Romani". Django Reinhardt was Romani, his work in Jazz was influenced by Romani music and Romani guitar. That is why its referred to as "Gypsy Jazz" when it technically should be Romani Jazz.
The word Gypsy derives from the misconception that the Romani are from Egypt (Hence Gypsy). But the truth is that the Romani are originated from India. So really, calling a Romani person Gypsy is like calling an Aboriginal an Indian.
Just trying to raise awareness.
Otherwise great video.
Miklos Sarkozi Offensive? To whom? Not at all. My gypsy friend prefers gypsy.
didn't know and didn't care...
Google Bing Images and check out the Olmecs who were called "Mexicans"
people of my tribe are generally called ''whites'' --- i choose to take offence at this because it isn't true, i am a kind of pinky-beige and caramel in the summer --- still yes you have a point --- i think it is time to throw all the manouche jazz players in a jail for hate speech where they can throw racist insults at one another just as much as they like without interference from politically-corrected little twats who had too much to think.. how about you mr. magic?
jus' tryin' ta lower th'tone, y'aaall
@123 123 Martin Taylor is of gypsy heritage and that is the nomenclature he has used.
