One of the beautiful things about Martin Taylor is that he is simpatico and tells it like it is. When Justin intelligently asks the most pertinent questions about how Martin makes the "mind and voice to fingers connection", Martin's explanation is right on the mark. He plays what he hears and has united his inner and actual voice to the ability to make the music manifest. Not denigrating learning theory or dismissing the importance of honing one's technique, but explaining truthfully the origin of his incredible musicianship. When you play this fluently, he is hearing and listening intently and "singing". Not "thinking". The Zen aspect of making music in the flow.
I never thought I will watch the whole 37 minutes! But I did... :D This interview is so fascinating, helpful and instructive! Thank you so much, Justin! ;)
Martin Taylor - a man who can play absolutely anything, yet comes across as so approachable and unassuming. A man for whom the word 'legend' is surely deserved.
Most instructive video on ear training and playing and making music ever on youtube!! just unbelievable how greatly he communicated all that!! WOW.. I hate jazz but i love this interview.
It's cool to see Justin listening intently and being impressed by the skills of Mr. Taylor in the same way I listen to Justin! This is a great channel for all levels of guitar.
The first 10 minutes of this should be mandatory for anyone wanting to play music or a parent with a child learning to play music! You'll probably want to watch the rest. Great interview!
wonderful interview love Mr Tailors playing and the way his musical mind work and your questions are spot on. Thank you for these nuggets of musical knowledge
Very informative and thought provoking.Excellent! THIS is what Django lived,a guy who couldn't read OR write depending on his EAR ! Beautiful inspiration! Thank you so much for this eye opening post.
Hi Justin. Just stumbled on this after watching a couple of your recent David Bowie videos. I love Martin Taylor, absolutely one of the jazz greats. I was lucky enough to see him play with Stefan Grapelli in Blackburn, Lancashire, probably 30 years ago and was in awe then. This was a fabulous, insightful interview, that just goes to show the genius in a very normal, down to earth guy. As a Brit who's lived in the US for the past 18 years, I absolutely understand his analogy to the many ways of saying the same thing. Great job Justin, and thanks for bringing this thought provoking conversation to us.
That was an amazing interview, with a lot of insightful ideas and comments about music. I specially like the comparaison between the academic sterility of learning a language in school and the versatility you naturally get by listening to the people talk in order to talk like them. That's precisely why developing ones hear is so important.
WOW what a fun interview!! i've been following justin since i was 15 or 16, now i'm 25 and he's the best (: also, WOW at martin taylor, the man is a humble genius
that's the way Marty...I know exactly what you're saying....I learnt to play by ear....however it was my mum who made me play guitar because she played guitar often and she wanted a mate to play rhythm with her. That was the beginning of my musical career. I now play guitar bass guitar drums and sing lead and harmonies. 45yrs later and I still can't read music.
Great interview, Justin. I love Martin's playing. The man is a legend. At around the 12 minute mark I was reminded of his track, Kwame, when he was taking about breaking pieces down into their basic parts. Cheers, mate.
What a great interview Justin, thank-you! Of course Martin Taylor is a genius but your reactions to his various improvs were exactly what I was feeling. Love your honesty and awe at such a great talent. Keep up the great work!
7:40 Absolutely spot on Justin, that's exactly how I think!! The advanced jazz stuff, especially at pace with changing tonal centres and complex changes it's really tough to work out what is going on!! When it's a slower diatonic ballad you can listen to it straight off and get what is going on. Sometimes it's the speed of it which makes it difficult to work out. Like Pat Martino's Oleo for instance vs Bill Evans's I Love You Porgy or something! and 24:35 Spot on LOL.
Justin + Martin - THX guys for your inspiration... and teaching, educational mission and work. Thank you helping me getting closer to the MUSIC. Cheerio. Joe from Hungary
Fantastic interview! Thanks so much. ...and very timely, too. I've been trying to figure out some of Martin's fast phrases and they are very challenging!
Wow, what an excellent interview, totally enthralling, I learned so much from that, as well as being inspired from the various insights into Martin's background and his thinking about how he plays. I think I need a few viewings of this video to fully appreciate all the tips and apply the thinking. Thanks
wonderful guitar player Martin from the other side, nice and helpful vid to improve the language and "to train the earing" as Martin says at the very beginning
Hi Justin! Wonderful Interview. You do something not a lot of interviewers do....LISTEN! Have you ever thought of having Charlie Hunter on to give a demonstration on playing with a walking bass and groove? The guy is a serious player and the embodiment of a one man band. Just me thinking out loud! cheers mate!
Martin is a beautifully modest man. He is always generous with his time to share his knowledge. A true Prince. Thank you Martin.
I was just thinking how much would this have cost to justin lol
Congratulation Justin for interviewing all those incredible guitarists. Everything good that happen to you is well deserved.
+Simon Caron Cheers Simon! It's a dream job eh!

It's amazing in my opinion the collaboration, between sound and his ability to play it back on the guitar
Superb. Taylor's among the very best. Magical to watch and listen. I learn something every time he speaks...
Very impressive. It puts it in perspective when Justin's impressed!
