GarageBand for iOS: Exploring complex chords
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The main chords that appear in the "smart instruments" enable a chord sequence to be found with no instrumental skills required.
The smart piano does however offer a bit more, as you can keep the bass note the same and explore different chords over the top, resulting in more intricate and interesting harmonic language.

Thanks, you opened up the chord section for me.
Once again , learning curve is up there. Btw, I hope GB is paying you for this. You have opened up so many ideas for all of us, especially during this lockdown time. Cheers Dan.🍻
I am a complete novice when it comes to music and music theory, so this was very helpful. I can see this chords feature on Garageband being very beneficial to me.
Thanks for sharing such valuable information .
Thanks Robert! Please do share on your social media network (if you haven't already). Thanks for your comment. Dan
I very much appreciate this one. I’ve watched it at least twice now and likely will again.
Thanks Dan - very useful!
Fantastic! You are a true musician!

Another incredibly insightful and helpful video for us Garage Band fans. Thanks

Fascinating The way you explain this Apple should rewards your communicating prowess. You could make these tutos longer or make more.
Thank you very much. The best explanation ever.
That is very nicely explained. What fun this is😎🎸🎸🎸. Thank you.
6:26 -- I 1/2 stumbled onto , 1/2 knew this would work (yet had to accidentally hear it , before I would implement it!) But thanks Dan for a really handy truck, this is one of the coolest tricks on here Imo
Thanks this is really clever. I stumbled across this video because I was trying to work out how to add some alt chords to the smart chords. Your video got me thinking and I realised that if I edit the chords in the key of D minor and add a Gbaug I can play D in the bass and get D7#5. This is really nice and means I can use smart chords to lay down backing tracks for jazz standards much more easily. It is also forcing me to brush up on my triads theory!
It's enjoyable to watch your tutorials.
edgardo crespo thank you Edgardo! I’m glad you enjoy them. It’s a shame only a couple of hundred people ever see them. I’m obviously not going about my digital marketing at all....
Many thanks for sharing your talent. You're an inspiration. Greetings from the Philippines.
This is really good advice. I'd never thought of doing this but, now that you've pointed it out, it's obvious. Thank you.

Great information. Being new to garageband I had no idea how much could be modified with the smart chords. In particular, I didn't realize until I watched this video that I can alter available chords to include some which aren't diatonic!
Thanks very much Lee! Please do share on your social media network (if you haven't already). Thanks for your comment. Dan
Great tutorial.. very much appreciated.
Dan...yet another fantastic video for Garage Band! Thank you for the keyboard info...made my day! My best to you.
Great information! I just discovered your UA-cam channel, and it’s fantastic. Thank you!
Cheers Jay!
Wow , think of it, some tricks (like specifically this one) can really make a newb or non instrumentalists sound like semi- competent musician's, this is such an incredible tool
Thanks for some great info and giving me food for thought

Thanks for your lesson!! You are so good!!
Good video ☺
Thanks so much! Didn't know about those functions.
Thanks for the great Lesson.
Excellent! I learned something!
Another golden nugget, thanks Dan 👍🏻
Thanks very much! Please do share on your social media (if you haven't already!) if you think it would be useful to your friends...
Dan you are the man!
What a great interesting video thanks very much Dan.
kingsroader thanks for watching-GarageBand works on so many levels and it’s been beautifully designed...
@@DanBakerMusic , Yes but if it wasn't for talented people like yourself making tutorials I for one would be clueless as to the limits of this free great app, so again thank you and will keep watching all the vlogs.
Thank you!
Glad it helped!
You make learning so much fun!

Wonderful, informative video - thank you! Ads in the middle, however, are super annoying.
Sorry about that! Google seems to just put ads anywhere...
This is good stuff Dan, a big help 😎
Just Fantastic
Dan........I can’t speak for your other talents, but I think you should be known musically as Dan The Man. Great clip. Your presentation ( i.e. teaching style) is informative and the ‘pace’ is easy. Extremely well done. Thank you!
Thanks very much Laurie! Please do share on your social media network (if you haven't already). Thanks for your comment. Dan
Hi, I have no music understanding and I’m trying to learn how to make music. I want to figure GarageBand and found this video. This is great but it’s still too complicated for me. Which of your videos should I watch first? You have a playlist? Which one is it.
I’m so thankful I found you, great way of explaining!
Hi there - yes I have a playlist of iOS GarageBand tutorials, but I need to organise things a bit better! I’ll get on it, but in the meantime, here’s a video from the start...

I had no idea what those 3 dark notes were. Awesome. Do you have a full review of all Garageband tips and tricks?
great video thanks!! :D
Thank you Brian - hope it helps!
Thanks so much Dan!
Thanks very much Frederick! Please do share on your social media network (if you haven't already). Thanks for your comment. Dan
Hahaha, impromptu "Mack the knife"
Thanks!
Why are the chords arranged as they are in the smart view. He just answered me
You do brilliant videos and you’re really good! if you lived near me I’d be round your joint all the time… lol
Thank you so much. I am curious if there is any way to get the functionality of the IOS chords onto a midi keyboard and use with the Mac on logic or garage band. One key chords. I found chord trigger but still seems limiting unless have knowledge of music like you do. Love the iOS chord strip but want to know how to make my keyboard do that so I can use the massive loop library on the computer. Please please help if possible💖
hello there, I think you can just open the GarageBand for iOS on your mac and the midi will be automatically inputted. I've tried this with the GarageBand for macOS app but I don't own Logic. I hope this helps, thank you
When he changes to e major the chords change because the tonic changed?
Thank you for the great work! min 6:50, What's the name of that song? Please!
Dj Franco Jimenez
He probably made it up on the spot.
It’s Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin, but Frank Sinatra also did a rendition of it which people know more of.

Sorry if I am repeating, but the five white strips (5 here includes the one with the alphabet) are the same chord in first inversion, but in successive positions on a full length keyboard? And the grey strips are single bass notes.. the root - fifth - root notes? Do confirm. Thanks for the video!
Yes: that’s all correct! I did another video about this last week with all the theory to go with it..

@@DanBakerMusic Will check it out. And thanks for the reply!
How to play C7 chord?
Sir, pHow can we set 7/8, 6/8 , 5/8, 4/8 time signatures in Garageband
This can’t be done in software, so the only way to do it is to create your own metronome beat using the drum sounds or percussion sounds, and then loop it, having quantised to eighth notes...
I am considering switching to a MacBook pro M1 version and selling my iPad pro 12.9 3rd generation. But.. I'm a big fan of the simplicity of programming in chords in the ios version of garageband. Is there something similar in Mac version? So I don't have to work harder lol
The iOS one is extremely tactile, and while the desktop version may offer little more control over EQ, compression, etc., for me nothing matches the touchscreen capabilities...
@@DanBakerMusic yea sigh they both have perks. I’m afraid I’ll miss the touch /tactile engagement more than I realize. I want to have more control over the overall mix via a master track, and almost unlimited tracks to play with tho lol
Dan, Wonderful tutorial as always. I have a question related to the amount of smart chords displayed on the larger 12.9 iPad Pro. I have a first gen 9.7 Ipad Pro that only displays 8 of those smart chords and was curious if anybody using the larger 12.9 can access more than 8 as the screen is obviously much larger. I did a few searches but can't get the answer I'm looking for. Any feedback appreciated.
The iPad Pro and larger ones do feature more, 12 I think, but you can edit the chords anyway. You can also record two different sections by changing the chords, but it won’t undo what you’ve recorded already. The only thing that will change chords if if you change the key.
@@DanBakerMusic Good points regarding how to incorporate more than the 8 displayed chords on the 9.7 during the creative process. The 12.9 and the extra real estate it provides, would make the whole writing process a bit faster and fluid, I speculate. Most of the songs I doodle with are jazz tunes inspired on iReal Pro and those (the ones I like anyway) rarely use less than 8 chords. Thanks for the feedback and keep up the great job!
Does only the key of c follow the 3-2 rule
The many keys in the key of c are all the keys in the key of c oh i sound dumb.
When he changed to e major I guess i realized the keys and chords change because he has to apply the rule to e major being the tonic. Hmmmm
Apple destroyed mobile music production today . 👽😖
