iirc, in Flowers for Algernon, a developmentally slow guy gets to have a procedure to increase his IQ after a rat named Algernon successfully undergoes the procedure and gets a higher IQ. However, he finds that now that he has a super high IQ, his friends weren't his real friends (like they used to bully him), the scientist behind the procedure was just using him, etc. Rat gets loses IQ again and then dies, so dude knows he's going to lose the IQ gains too. However, after he goes back to his original IQ, he knows the pity and falseness of everyone around him, so he leaves and asks for someone to put flowers on the rat's grave (aka Flowers for Algernon)
