Exploring Cornwall - The Chapel on Roche Rock

- I am scared. I don't like heights and I have just climbed up Roche Rock and now my legs have turned to jelly!
In this episode, Mark Sellwood and I, have come to explore a medieval chapel built onto a huge lump of granite, known as Roche Rock.
On top of Roche Rock is a ruined chapel (dedicated to St Michael) which is said to have been the abode of a leper or a monk. An 1881 description of the chapel, still had a considerable portion of the masony standing and one or two windows were faily perfect, although the steps up to the chapel are roughly cut.

Well Richard, you deserve a medal , good lord alive as they say. Richard and Mark you make a great team working together. Well done.
We had a blast Ann - loved the challenge and managed to make it to the top. Luckily the cows didn't get me.
And the UA-camr Bravery Award 2019 goes to ....
Mark Selwood ... for daring to take Richard further out of his comfort zone than even he thought possible!
Bloody brilliant film chaps. I've been waiting for this to be released and it didn't disappoint. The raw emotion came over so clearly. I loved the way the colour drained back into the picture when you reached the top.
Got to love a precarious ladder!
Hahahaha - it was truly wonderful to make that and the fear was genuine. I couldn't have done it without fabulous Mark. All credit goes to him.
aww thank you
I doff my comedy hat to you Sir! I used to have a customer that was ex special forces, some of the things he had to do for that could make the devil cry, but he to had a crippling fear of heights. Well done for facing your fears and thank you for doing it for us. Those views are spectacular and such an interesting place. It must have been so much easier with the lovely Mark and the calming aura he has.
The fear just takes over you and you feel a complete fool. Luckily I made it to the ground and when I did I was proud of myself.
OMG! I could NEVER do something like that, being terrified of heights, so ...well done. Amazing views from up there. Hope you got down safely, and probably breathed a huge sigh of relief once your feet touched the normal level of earth!!!! Well done again, great video.
Oh yes, I was happiest back on terra firma - but was exhilarating nonetheless
What a brilliant place. Many calls to your 'God' very apt in a chapel! Seriously though, very brave in the quest for your art 👏. Cows and heights, a double whammy
Yes, I face both fears that day! Silly me!
Respect for facing and overcoming your fear Richard. Excellent location. Obviously you made it down in one (?) piece as you uploaded the video :-)
Yes, I believe I am down now - although still shaking! :)
My own legs felt like jelly watching you goat atop that rock!
It was scary and I am a wimp!
@@RichardVobes Hello from NE Ohio USA. I was yelling "You can do it, Indy." the whole time. Great adventure. Can't image the building of such a structure. My knees are the same. I tried to climb a lighthouse stairs. Got up one flight to a window and could not go any further.
same here, jelly legs just watching but i really want to go to this amazing place
Well done for climbing that! Not sure I could have done it, I always find the getting down much more precarious! An interesting construction
What a fab building eh? They must have been quite mad to put it there.
You might be glad to know that I think I got my Mom hooked on you now. Maybe a little less thrilled to know she laughed hysterically all through this one at you! I don't think I've heard her laugh that hard in years!!! I could hear her in the other room yelling "No don't do it!" at the TV in the other room & claims it made her weak-kneed, but in reality she was laughing so hard she nearly wet herself!
That is amazing! Hello to your your Mum! :)
@@RichardVobes I think she watched you for almost 5 hrs straight today!!!!
Beautiful rocks !!!!!!
Thanks very much
Well done... Great entertainment.. History at it's best.
Thanks so much Ron. It was great fun despite the fear!
Oh lordy. I found myself saying don’t do it Richard while watching this. I have climbed in parks in Utah, and being on hard slippery rocks at high elevation scare the bejeebies out of me. You’re very brave. What a view at the top though! Lovely video.
Thanks Caroline. I did enjoy it despite the fear.
What an amazing Chapel.
Isn't it incredible?
Was it difficult to get back down?
Sod that you would not catch me going up there your so brave good job it was not a windy day
Ha! I wouldn't have gone up there on a windy day!
Thank you Richard for going beyond the call of duty to show us all this beuatiful place.
Oh I did enjoy myself - thanks so much for watching. :)
This is somewhere I've always wanted to visit, like you im not great with heights! Great video again
Thanks so much - Mark was very brave.
Just seen this video, well done to you Richard. Very impressed for someone who suffers from not liking heights and is holding and operating a camera, holding a mic and talking to camera for the video at the same time. Multi-tasking at its best. Some time ago one of my climbing buddies on a family holiday solo climbed up this to the chapel, only using the rocks, not the ladders I believe. He is a good climber so no ropes and gear involved.
It was a laugh really, but, boy, was I frightened. :)
😱 Oh my goodness me!!! You must have been wearing your brace pants that day! Well done Richard!😁 I'm really not good with heights, I know I wouldn't be able to climb up that fabulous rock... when Robbie and I have been in precarious situations whilst hiking up mountains I, as you, say "we shouldn't be doing this!" "I can't do it"😂 My tummy was doing summersaults watching you! Fabulous video! Thank you intrepid🌄explorers Richard & Mark 😁
That's so much for watching - it was a wonderful experience to get to the top.
well done for getting up there....going back down was probably worse i should imagine!! what an amazing, unusual building (or ruin rather).....they way it was built into the rock!!
A totally amazing building - I did love the experience.
Hi Richard, oh wow seriously impressive how you coped with your fear of heights plus carrying a camera and mic! I couldn't have done it that's for sure! Great views though you did fab!😊
Very well done, Richard. Inspiring courage!
Hi Jane - thanks very much. It was a little daunting!
"Nearer my God to thee" in rather more than one sense...and for a brief while there you certainly were...I've a reasonable head for heights mate, but for that little exploit you gain my deepest respect
Cheers
Dave
Cheers Dave - it was fun despite the fear!
I went there years ago, used to have relatives that lived very close by. Fun video, always good to see a presenter in peril ;)
So pleased you enjoyed it.
I’m sure we all appreciate the ordeals you put yourself through to bring us these wonderful vlogs!
Thanks so much Andrew. I did enjoy it once my feet hit the ground,
Wow, what a place! I can quite understand why you got so queasy, Richard - when you don’t have hands free, that’s got to be terrifying! I’m just trying to work out how on Earth they built it!
Can you imagine! Must have had some form of scaffold even back then.
Wow that place looks great, I do want to go there! I dond at all mind heights. I don't expect to See you doing sky diveing anytime soon.!
Well done great video 👍
Sky diving - no!
That place is definitely on my list of places to visit.
OMG, I feltevery nerve in your body, I am terrified of heights. My daughter and I went to Clifford's Tower in York , we got to the top and I froze , had to be lead down with my eye's closed praying the whole way then couldn't move for 20 mins after I got down. lol You have such courage xx
Thanks Debbie for sharing your fear of heights story - it gets you when you least expect it.
It’s all in the mind Richard but we’ll done I know the feeling.
Great video well done.
Thanks very much
Nooo way would you ever see me going up that ladder my true fear.you have balls of steal Richard
Hahahaha - thanks Peter!
Well apparently that monk really took it to heart when Christ said to Peter "Upon my rock I will build my Church..." What was w/ those old world Cornish that kept building their structures right smack on top of rocky crags like that?🤔 You were looking a little green by the end there Richard!🤢 But you are braver than I!!!! Looked like a real interesting ruin to explore but I'm not sure I could of got past my fears!😬
So pleased you enjoyed it - it was great fun, despite the scariness.
@@RichardVobes glad you got back down safely I'm asuming w/out 💩 yourself!
Jolly well done Richard. You are very brave. I trust the one dislike was from yourself!! atb snack
It was a fun climb really. Thanks for watching!
you aren't staying there in a Roche motel, are you?
saw the cows, had the Jaws theme suddenly in my head, imagining a cow slipping through the high grass, heading towards Richard!
at least up there you are safe from the killer cows!!!
in all seriousness, i admire you even more, Richard!!! i hate heights so much i have trouble climbing on a step stool! and there you are, on the top of the world!!!
Hahahaha - that is true. Imagine if the cows had gathered at the bottom while we were at the top!
excellent location.i did think it was a location used in an Arthurian film but think I might be confusing it with St. Govan's Chapel, Pembrokeshire it was however used in the last Omen film the final conflict
I am not surprised, it's a great place to explore.
Omg never knew it was used in the Omen movie, really interesting. Must go back and look at that scene sometime. Thank you
I thought it was also in the film sir Gawain and the green knight or Exaclibur but I couldn't find it mentioned as a location for either...though I could have sworn it was in a king Arthur type of film
Well done you, I would love to do that but wouldnt be able to do the climb, also I would be like you with heights, my stomach would have left me. That is so interesting, thank you.
Just think how easier it would be to film this today with a drone. Just sit in the van with a brew and off you fly.
But where is the sense of danger with a drone? :)
It’s always quicker coming back down,32 feet per second per second,if you’re not careful!!
just watching made me feel so nervous for you, I turned away and couldn't watch it all
Oh dear, I am sorry - it was a fun climb even though I was scared. Thanks for watching what you did. :)
Nice video👍👍👍 Thanks.
So pleased you enjoyed it.
Good watch.
Thanks for watching!
@@RichardVobes It was good.
Great video thank you
Thanks very much.
I will be staying near Roche in a few days time and I hope to see the chapel.
It is worth seeing!
You really need to get up Helman Tor as well. The place reeks of history.
That sounds like fun - will have to check it out. Thanks.
OMG !!!!! Brave or Foolhardy I can't decide 😲
Both!
A scene in "Omen lll The Final Conflict" was filmed here.
Sir Edmond Vobes and Sherpa Selwood! Yes you really we’re a feared!! I hope your insurance broker wasn’t watching that!?!
Hahahahaha - trouble is everyone will expect the videos to be of daring-dos!
Very brave
OMG!
Yep!
Feel the fear and do it anyway!
Yep - sounds about right.
They should rename that fraggle rock in your name Richard 😂 I’m not afraid of heights it’s edges I don’t like 🙈
It's the falling I don't care for actually! :)
Don't feel too bad. My condo in Bangkok was on 32nd Floor and a friend visited and would not step foot on the balcony for fear of heights. In fact, it was a very common reaction from many visitors.I used to fly helicopter without a care in the world but I would be worse than you if I climbed a ladder 4 feet!
Heights and the way we react to them is fascinating - thanks for watching!
I live in Roche.
There's always an easier way down - you can fall down, but not up.
A key detail is missing of great significance
Tregeagle is pronounced "tr'-GAI-gul'. Not 'Tre-GEE-gul". Ask a Cornishman!
Oh dear - did we get it wrong? Wait! Mark is a Cornishman! :)
