Minions and the Cheesewring, Bodmin Moor, CORNWALL WALK

- Join us as we explore Bodmin Moor! We park in Minions, a village proud of its association with Despicable Me. It is the highest village in Cornwall and was built to serve the mining and quarrying industries in the area in the 19th century.
On our way to the Cheesewring, we explore the legend of the Hurlers, a group of standing stones in three rings - what do you think they were? Will Andrew be brave and climb the the rocky outcrops near the Cheesewring?

A very similair story is told about the stone circles at Stanton Drew in Somerset. The Devil in the form of a piper appears at a Saturday wedding causing the guests to dance into Sunday and are turned to stone. The 3 stones of a cove nearby are the bride, groom and priest.

Gotta love a stone circle. Merry Maidens down the other end of Cornwall are full of mystery and magic too....didn't they dance on the Sabbath and get frozen in time too....maybe they were the girlfriends of the Hurlers?! Never been up there so was lovely to see it so close up....and complete with rock climbing too Sarah. Well done! Rather you than me! And a cake (of course) to finish the day off as you do.....:-)) x J x

You certainly got our little girl's attention at 1:42!!! Superb landscapes showing the rugged interior of the county, and totally believable Cornish tales of the hurlers. A really enjoyable little walk in what looked like perfect weather.
Ahhh! I wondered how many doggy owners would 'curse' me! A bit of fun though and we are still waiting to hear from Toby! Sarah :)

Free parking, love it and I love stone circles and we have some great examples Up North and got to say, that was a dam fine example as well. Loved the balancing rocks and well done on standing on top and a magnificent view indeed. Great way to finish the walk with a tea and a chocolate slice, cheers Alan

Lovely walk guys. Just a thought: how about bringing Sarah's Mum along on these "walks for all ages" to get a senior citizen's view on whether it does what it says on the tin?
A great walk on a glorious day :) Thank you for the story about the stone circles. And I am also so intrigued by these stacks of stone. I have seen them also in other places in Cornwall. There are some on The Isles Of Scilly as well. They are a little mysterious and I wonder how they have come to be like this. As I understand; this part of England was never beneath the ice cap during the last ice age. And perhaps that is the reason they have been able to stand still and wear off the softer parts, and not get swept away with the ice and gravel? Thank you for sharing. Torunn :-)
Hi Torunn, Yes, no glacial activity on Cornwall bit we still have the geological outcrop of granite forming the higher hills, only rainwater erosion down here, which must have played it part over the years, Sarah :)

The horse are free roaming moorland ponies. Interested in us but easily spooked and a bit flighty, Sarah :)
Hi Sarah and Andrew, we have an offroad buggy , would you say the walk is offroad-buggy-friendly?
90% of the walk would be ok but climbing up to the Cheesewring would be a challenge, lots of boulders and long grass, steep at times. Sarah :)

How many miles was the walk
Good video, but you said (5:54 ish) "No evidence of man"? WHAT? look no trees, sheep, horses, cattle, mines fences off, stoned tracks, quarries, farm buildings, most stones have evidence of been worked, stone walls, chimneys engine houses ,a railway stone circles and the beautiful hill fort just to name a few things. yes nature has done its work repairing it . Its not natural, it's man / woman made beauty.
The hermits stone cave/ house is found to the west side of the quarry, below the rim path. have fun finding it.
The stone carvings are all around the hill fort , on the sides/tops of large rocks, even harder to spot as they are from less than1 to 50 metres apart. A video in its own right. Have fun looking.
