Santorini, whose shape today resembles a crescent, was once a round island and was called Strongyli. When, after sweeping geological changes, its central part collapsed, the #Cycladic #civilization began to flourish. As you can easily see, Plato's references to Atlantis bear a resemblance to the #ancient form of Santorini. A Brilliant and blessed place because of the civilizations that flourished in these soils and perhaps cursed due to the vast natural catastrophe. The mystery of Santorini will never stop fascinating us.
While wandering around the narrow Aegean style streets of the island, one thinks that is transferred into another era. Everything here is different and the energy of the earth is intense. Do not forget that the #volcano is still active.
We start with the settlement Emporio or Niborio, which is the most populated village in Santorini. In the dark years of the Middle Ages the pirate raids were continuous and relentless. To protect themselves, the inhabitants built their houses next to each other, integrated into labyrinthine corridors, creating parallel walls and escape exits that framed the local castle. The traditional settlement of Emporio was therefore one of the 5 historic castles of the island.
At the foot of the hill dominates the tower of Goulas, which was probably built in the 15th century, during the period of Venetian rule. From this tower there was a tunnel, which led to the #castle.
On the opposite hill you can admire eight traditional 19th century #windmills and Byzantine ruins.
Simplicity, peace, awe and mystery are some of the words that could describe the feelings of the visitor in this part of Santorini. In every narrow street a new surprise awaits you. A small church, a wonderful door, 2 tables in the courtyard and all this millennial human wisdom and tradition that surpasses everything modern with its authenticity.

Five kilometers north lies Pyrgos #Kallistis, the highest built village of Santorini, which offers unrestricted #breathtaking #panoramic #views and an alternative #location to enjoy unforgettable #sunsets.
A special Greek castle full of scents from the eastern #Mediterranean, made of houses built on the ground or forming an underground cave part of the rocks in the #volcanic soils of the island, many ornate #churches, labyrinth-like streets and the passion of the inhabitants that gives life to this magical island.
Many centuries ago Pyrgos had walls and a single entrance, the kastelloporta. Through a special construction the locals could pour hot oil on the enemies who were trying to invade. This building, which does not exist today, was called a loophole or killer. And in this castle there was a system of underground galleries which served to protect and escape the inhabitants in time of need.

Santoríni is really best approached by sea; as your arriving craft manoeuvres over the impossibly midnight blue waters of the #caldera, the sheer lava cliffs of the caldera lip, with white houses on top like a dusting of snow.
It’s one of the spectacles of the Med, as is the reverse practice of staring out over the caldera waters from up top - something not lost on the strangely assorted clientele of honeymooners, cruise-ship patrons and backpackers.
