Eric's application of somatics is brilliant. I cannot recommend it enough. 10 stars and your freedom of movement back.

Oh my! I have the most painful neck and left shoulder pain...for months..I also have a lifetime history of costochondritis.. no-one has ever suggested these two could be linked! Going to practice this ....thank you..

I would be astonished if they were not directly related.
Rib Cage Un-Caged 1 & 2 are great places to start.
The movements on the floor will help you make a deeper level of change.
Free your torso first. That is where the roots of the tensions are hiding.
Here are some movements that may help you find more ease for your neck.
Remember, do not go into any strain, discomfort, or pain in any of these movements.

The shoulders tyrannize the neck. The shoulders are unhappy when they are not adequately supported and moved by the ribs.
Consider your neck pain as the boiling over of hidden tensions in the torso. Address root holdings to take the burden off the neck. ua-cam.com/video/c3ojqB4pK2M/v-deo.html

BUT... The key is to free the roots of the problem. Because it is an asymmetrical shoulder Issue, you must (this is most important) also consider the differences between the sides:

This is a good one because it helps us move places that we don't move very often. Stuck in these tensions feels like normal.
I hope you also did part 2 of this. Part 2 goes to another level. It take you to seeing the body as lines of space.

The videos that have you move while lying down can make an even more profound change. I am so glad to hear the this has been helpful. Look for the hidden constriction in your breathing space. That gets you close to the root holdings. Think front, back, sides, and diagonals/twist/rotation. Is each line of the torso seen as easy breathing space? In the movements, which part of the line doesn't change? Those are the places to focus on, breathing space. Your comment helps me to do more video editing. Thank you!

Somatics has been on my radar for a while but have never actively tried it. I told a lot of emotional tension in my body. I started this video with the pure intention of helping my ribs feel better after a nasty bout of covid. What happened was so much more. The slow release back to balance and neutral - I burst into tears! A physical and emotional release happened that I was not expecting to happen so easily. What kind of magic is this?? Liked and subscribed ❤

You are freeing yourself from some of the holdings that you don't need to carry around forever. They are deep habits and will show up when the going gets tough. Then, can you give your nervous system a gentle kind lesson to let you out of it again. It takes some practice to change the course of your ship.
If you are a person who has that type of emotional release, be gentle and accepting of your self. Those are valuable releases. Be careful to not go so far, in each lesson that you tire out your system's ability to accept the change you are teaching it.
I have lots of movements for the ribs. I like this sequence. It helps you see the space more clearly. But the movements on the floor will allow you to make a deeper change with a better lesson.
In some ways it is magic, because it allows you to change what seemed unchangable. Where we're stuck is hidden from our awareness. It runs mostly silently in the background.
I encourage you to try some from these playlists, if you want to go further: ( start at the beginning of the lists and work down.)

I find this exploration useful and quite doable and shareable. Your "pleasurable effort" suggestion resonates. Geoff just walked through the room and commented that after watching this video I am sitting up "straighter," with a better, more conscious posture! Wonderful!

Love your somatic movements and instructions, you are my favorite practitioner on UA-cam. Thank you! I find the ribs are such an important area of the body that everyone needs to unwind. By chance have you heard of the postural restoration institute? Both somatic and PRI practice has been instrumental at restoring my body. I would imagine the two practices would do well at cross pollinating!

I'm glad you found me. The brain/nervous system runs the muscle tension.
I have studied manual osteoplathy in great detail, it is the approach that PRI is similar to. Yes, postural distortion and it has manual osteoplathy treatements seem to target the issue, they appear to target it. I devoted years of my life to passionately studying and perfecting my ability to do that work as a practitioner.
The problem is: The nervous system returns to the equilibrium that it wants to hold you in. Manipulation and stretching does not offer the feedback the nervous system needs to let you out of the deeply held patterns. Aside from structural assessment, posture can also be seen as the tension habit of our signature emotions. These tensions are the baseline, the background noise in the room that you don't notice after a while. They run outside your perception. Any attempts to "stand up straight" are an imposition of (what I call) 'False Posture' on 'True Posture". False posture will always loose to the how the system wants to run things.
I see posture as how we are held in our breathing constrictions. These constrictions are your normal.
People with tight backs never breathe into their backs.
These movement allow you to teach our system that there can be easy access to breathing space. The breathing habit runs very, very deep. This is how to change it.
My experiment is to only do Pandiculation, this version of Somatics. I have found it as the best way to change posture.
I am glad you are searching for what works for you.
This may be a good playlist of movements to explore: ua-cam.com/play/PLFLw4vgr7ayi01UZkxj4X5X2epj74vDxf.html

The other day, I was doing while I was mowing the lawn. I have noticed that my solidification often starts at the upper ribs. Freeing the upper ribs seems can be seen as addressing the root of how the tensions germinate in the system. Thank you for your comment. Remember to revisit these places often.
