They used to make a supercharger kit for VFRs. Slap that on, and they can put 180hp to the wheel. If that dude could get his hands on one, that would be fucking fantastic.
Dontcallmeshirley sadly not even close. The 800s can be pushed well over 200 horse. The vtec would be nice for the little extra grunt from two valve down low. Everyone gets that backwards. Instead of the fifth cylinder ala rc211v Honda instead made the 1200 monstrosity that looks fine on paper but can't hang with a warmed over 750 or 800. It gets better fuel economy though right? Umm no. More durable? Also no. Better for upgrades? Nope. PC does almost nothing. Exhaust is an exercise in wasted money and really building one gets a broken engine fairly quickly. It wouldn't live long in a 1400 pound car either. Don't get me wrong they really aren't bad bikes but for the original asking price very disappointing. Honda heard the howls of frustration aaaand back comes the 800. In further neutered from "to enhance midrange performance ". Also still a fine machine at leftover prices. Some below 5k. But not exactly the firebreather the endurance racing bikes were in the 80s. Staying with the v4 a real upgrade would be the motus chevy/Honda/Ducati Frankenstein thing that just works. Or vmax 1700 or burly aftermarket twin or zx14. I'm a Honda guy but it's getting hard to defend brutally outdated overpriced products.
Dontcallmeshirley yeah that turned into a little more of a rant than I meant when I started writing. The 1200 is an okay bike. Just not close to living up to the hype. When they set out to replace the vfr 1100xx and pan/st all in one bike we expected more. Yeah at peak it's about 50 more horsepower, but the nasty dead spot between about three and five thousand makes it ride like a lot less. And yes it would take a serious build to be over 200 reliable horsepower, but a small car would be ideal for it. Lots of room for an intercooler or two so the supercharger does what it really should. I guess we were just spoiled in the 90s with giant leaps forward every couple years. Now it seems like its kind of the chicken and egg thing between shrinking sales and lack of innovation. The new bikes in general are fine of course. I built and rode a few. And get the itch to do something new again. The fire blades for example. The latest greatest can shave a few hundredths off on a well groomed track, but from a real world standpoint your 07 is just as good. And in my opinion preferred because it was/is just a good bike. Without the electronic childproofing the bike media and manufacturers have put ahead of hard engineering. Currently on an 05 rc51 btw. Older but still works. And yeah I miss the v4 burble down low and shriek at the top. Wish Honda would hear that and give us what they could have built.
Yamaha's cross plane I4 has the same firing rhythm as a V4, but almost twice as much power in R1 trim. A larger displacement V4, like the Motus V4 would sound also sound great.
Rick Rucker The debate is coming from people who don't really get engineering I think, the design of the gear teeth is literally meant for it as long as you match the rpms close enough. A quick shifter is one step further and matches those rpms for you with a properly timed fuel cut mid-shift. If I were to venture a guess as to why the owner said to use the clutch, probably because this weighs roughly triple the weight of the bike and a bad shift will result in a substantial amount more torque applied to that motorcycle transmission
Then id tell him to use the clutch too. These Trans gearing is 500 rpm apart, he clearly revved 3k rpms to rev match a down shift. clutch = random ppl not fucking your syncro
That engine is a masterpiece, as well as Dean’s build. I rode my VFR for 96000 miles and sold it to the next guy knowing it was still a strong engine. I also ran the kerker exhaust on it which sounded exactly how yours sounded when you hit the open pipe lever. I can’t tell you how many good memories flashed through my mind seeing the winding road ahead and hearing that V4 sing! You literally brought tears to my eyes yet the smile from ear to ear also remains. Thank you for posting this. Now this is my answer to people who ask why I rode that bike for so long. Watch the 3 wheeled Morgan video. I have to say that was higher on the smiles per mile meter. This is definitely a close second. Either way..awesome video. Matt..please get a 360 camera. I'd love to watch your videos with my VR headset.
Wow, of all the high horse power, super expensive and unobtainable cars Matt has driven and this 115 hp beast puts them to shame for sheer fun. It points to the basic joy of driving: light weight, loud and high revving motor that you can feel. Such a pleasure to watch.
I think it's safe to assume that Matt didn't get that grin pealed off his face for at least a week after climbing out of the car!! When he got home that night, his wife must have taken one look at that grin and asked just what did he spend his day doing?? That would certainly make it worth going to work... and getting PAID for it!! 😂😂🤣
This is really fucking cool. More people should do this. I wish we had more high revving engines as well though. I feel like it would be cooler then anything else. More fun that way.
I have a 1998 VFR with a Staintune pipe. Instead of 1400 lbs, it is around 500 lbs. The 800 cc fuel injected V4 with the gear driven cams is only in the 98-01 VFR. Best sounding engine ever made, imho. Power from 4K to 12K. If one V twin is cool, then two V twins is twice as cool. Best all around motorbike ever made, hands down. Glory days for Honda. Cam
I just showed my roommate (who couldn't be less into cars) this video and the one with Alex Roy's Morgan 3-wheeler and he loved these quirky cars. How could you not like this thing? I WANT ONE SO BAD.
It is a sport tourer, a gentlemans sport bike. Fast, comfortable, refined, reliable, excellent build quality, exotic engine configuration, great handling, great sound, and a true racing heritage going back to the 80's. You have no idea how important the VF and VFR bikes were. Im going to guess you are a young fuckboy on some kind of 1000cc or 600cc supersport. Im 20 and have owned one. You get a much more linear of a power band and more torque as opposed to an inline 4.
I'm amazed the internals of it can actually move the car... I thought the rods would snap or something if it tried giving momentum to something this size with two passengers. Great engineering from Honda if this thing is actually just a stock bike engine.
Nope, its a bike engine from the VFR 800. Unlike cars, motorcycles get really cool engines like V4s and crossplane I4s. That is what happens when you decide that the engine is far more important than "features".
vtr0104 with the right gearing it will cope quite well, it's the clutch that will cop the abuse (then again, if it's using the stock VFR box it'll have a wet clutch too). Gear-driven camshaft VFRs are legendary, one bloke put 446,000 miles on a stock 750 with no more than regular servicing without ever separating the heads from the block.
Amazing build, absolutely love it. I only came across this video after buying one of these engines for my S800 Honda project (it was super cheap engine an local) an wanted to check what it was gona sound like, then found this gem! I love this video an watch it almost every month to boost my inspiration! This thing sounds insane and I can't wait to get mine up and running an on the road to have a similar experience to you guys here! I was so chuffed to see that someone else had put this engine in a car, not just any car but a similar era and same manufacturer as my car. Sweet, sweet car Steve, and amazing build Dean 👍👍👍
My compliments to the builder of this truly one of the most BAD ASS Honda 600s I've had the pleasure to hear and watch being built and driven. A former employee I worked with many years ago had one that was stock, and it was the most obnoxious little shit, had dual exhaust with glasspacs, and turned heads everywhere he drove it. Dean you took it to another level many times over and I will go to sleep tonight with a grin as wide as the Grand Canyon.Thankyou!!!!!
That was sensational .. thats the sort of experience most car enthusiasts would kill for .. even a hard core motorcyclist would love to rip around the roads in something like that 👍😆
With that valve open the motor sounds like a smaller version of the Cosworth DFV V8 engine they used in old F1 cars. Was out on my KTM 690 Enduro R just a few days ago and came across a guy riding a very nice VFR800 with a pipe and it blew me away how good it sounded. Said the bike only costed him $3.5k
That's the kind of car I would love to see a build log of, or something similar, with a in-depth look and some of the chalenges that occured during the build.

rp20832 Yes I was thinking that too...Cosworth v8 but Judd even more so.
rp20832 Lol, I wondered if somebody else was thinking that.
I didn't notice until you pointed out, but damn dude you're dead on! Listen to this N600, then the Judd V8 190e... The similarity is uncanny!
it is a V4...
And that my friends, is what we call a masterpiece.
Still probably my fav one take to date, the sheer genuine joy on matts face the entire time.
One of the best sound tracks I've heard on One Take. So cool.
When Matt opened up the exhaust, it reminded me of the in car sound of a nascar
Brought a tear to my eye watching the smile on your faces, what a beautiful little machine
This is my favorite episode of TheSmokingTire "On Take" ever!
This is the single coolest car that's been on this show.
themilkinator33. OR Coyote Cayman OR LS3 Jag. HOW BOW DAH
That's actually my number two, damn fine car
Always come back to this video, what a beautiful car and swap. There are so few N600s left, I wish I had been born twenty years earlier
Anyone that disliked this video should be banned from all car channels.
ban from the internet, you mean.
ban from life, you mean.
and coffee adverts
Yer Boss Well, that seems pretty aggressive for absolutely no reason.
idiotfieldmouse you know i to dont get the dislikes i mean i would never think of building something like this but wooooow is it cool
This thing is freakin awesome. Son of a bitch screams.
I died when he opened the dump pipes at 9:11, This thing is a monster!
And I thought it was already on the loud mode lol. I completely forgot that Matt turn to the "quiet mode" right in the beggining.
I love how the camera shakes at high RPMs!
This was the first one take where when it ended I immediately watched it from the beginning again, the whole way through.
hands down the coolest one take ever
I don't think I ever saw Matt smile so much!
yeah, and I have smiled all the way through out this video. Must be seeing a car guy REALLY enjoying a car, that's why!
Mark's Random Videos That was my thought too. Never seen Matt so happy in any car.
I think the only time he came close to this, was with the 650whp EVO VIII !
Watch the 3 wheeled Morgan video. I have to say that was higher on the smiles per mile meter. This is definitely a close second. Either way..awesome video.
Matt..please get a 360 camera. I'd love to watch your videos with my VR headset.
Yes ! True, that car was fun but scary at the same time
Wow, of all the high horse power, super expensive and unobtainable cars Matt has driven and this 115 hp beast puts them to shame for sheer fun.
Kuddlesworth NA high revving engines are the coolest, best sounding and most fun!
High revving V12 engines are the coolest. That scream is just great.
Rotarys rock too, shame they aren't used more
blame the epa. Theyre smokey like 2-strokes :-/
I've always wanted to do this with two Ducati motors :D just need to find the right pre 75 car, same day this will be done.
Coolest car ive seen for a while, Matt looks so happy I want a go in it. XD
Cam
This is definitely one of the coolest cars you have ever done.
Matt's face has sold me on this car. Insert take my money meme here!
I just showed my roommate (who couldn't be less into cars) this video and the one with Alex Roy's Morgan 3-wheeler and he loved these quirky cars. How could you not like this thing? I WANT ONE SO BAD.
that man knows hes driving a gem
That is the fucking sickest sounding little car I have ever heard in my life. Matt buy one!
you mean motorcycle.. lol
Try riding on top of a 800cc V4...
reportedly the best all around bike Honda built
Ken Howell not really. It is a motorcycle for middle aged men.
On a cool scale from 1 to 10 a Ferrari is a 10...this thing is a 12!!
slspg Ferrari is like a 4
I have never seen Matt so happy. He has a huge grin on his face the whole video.
I don't think I've ever seen matt so happy.
Such a rad little monster. Keeping it Honda, keeping it unique with the V4, love it.
I'm amazed the internals of it can actually move the car... I thought the rods would snap or something if it tried giving momentum to something this size with two passengers. Great engineering from Honda if this thing is actually just a stock bike engine.
inline 4 brudfa
Nope, its a bike engine from the VFR 800. Unlike cars, motorcycles get really cool engines like V4s and crossplane I4s. That is what happens when you decide that the engine is far more important than "features".
vtr0104 with the right gearing it will cope quite well, it's the clutch that will cop the abuse (then again, if it's using the stock VFR box it'll have a wet clutch too). Gear-driven camshaft VFRs are legendary, one bloke put 446,000 miles on a stock 750 with no more than regular servicing without ever separating the heads from the block.
That's one of the best you've done. You can't hide the sheer joy of such a machine, love it!
Matt was genuinely amused, like a kid in his favorite toy store. I don’t think I have ever seen him smile so hard.
I lost track of how many times I've come back to watch this.
This video is AMAZING. Cool car, and I love seeing the enjoyment of Matt in this awesome car.
That was sensational .. thats the sort of experience most car enthusiasts would kill for .. even a hard core motorcyclist would love to rip around the roads in something like that 👍😆
All the advertisers should come to Matt!
All the advertisers should come on Matt!
All the advertisers should come on Matt!
All the advertisers should come with Matt!
He is driving over the speedlimit which is a microaggression for the lefties
😆👏🏻
Matt's smile and laughs proves how great this car is. Such a fantastic One Take
Really cool unique car. Reminds me of the Mk1 GTIs screaming on hillclimbs...a car built for pure fun. Cool.
ChaosphereIX yup there is a rabbit not far from me with a busa swap. Cool af
Now this Honda really DOES have a motorcycle engine in it!
The original had what looks like an air cooled 350 twin. It had a shroud around the motor and an electric fan for cooling.
@@CncObsession Old one pretty much had a CB360 twin engine.
I'm glad I found this video. I have the same engine I'm putting in my 74 MG Midget. I'm doing that exhaust switch for sure lol
man Americans are so creative and so supportive of others creativity i wish the rest of the world was them same
the game i really think that is the biggest thing my country had to offer
Hahahahaha you funny fucker
Other ingress
What a dumbass comment.
OMG my cheeks hurt from smiling 😁 what an amazing experience . watch it.
Same bike, got mine for 3k and yes the sound is phenomenal especially when you hear it reverbing off buildings around you.. nothing compares
That's the kind of car I would love to see a build log of, or something similar, with a in-depth look and some of the chalenges that occured during the build.
You are in luck Sir.

Aw yiss.
This is the best car you have featured in a long time!
Absolutely brilliant!
Love Matt's compliments towards the car, you can tell they're truly sincere and he's having a blast driving this car!
This is the best One Take episode, period.
coolest car on Matt's channel!
That V4 sounds insanely good, I'd love to see something similar using the Yamaha V- max as power source.
in todays videos we hear Matt laugh and giggle for 14 minutes
with the sound of an angry lawnmower behind him
I really wish my lawnmower sounded like this,I'd cut grass every day lol.
Matt is the only guy on youtube who can get away with doing promos
I instantly skip ahead as soon as I see him starting that shit. "I want to talk to you guys about (CLICK) let's go for a drive!"
my god.....
and out of ALLLL the one takes you have done, never have I ever seen such genuine excitement come out of you.
This is the coolest car I’ve ever seen
Makes me wanna find an old Fiat 500 and drop a new Ducati twin into it. We can race. Ducati vs. Honda. lol
get the new 200hp xdiavel engine and that would be sweet, lots o torque down low.
Hmm. Makes me wanna find an old Isetta and drop a new S1000RR engine into it. Let’s have a three way race. BMW vs Ducati vs Honda.
And to those other repliers, let us use a VFR1200 or Goldwing engine. A RC213VS in GP form may be a bit much. Ummm, CBR1000RR or CB1000F?
can ducati win motogp lol
How about a Smart car with a Hayabusa engine
Gear driven cams!
I'll never let go of my 5th gen! Best thing I ever did for myself. Just wish I still had my 1980 Civic, with the same set up!
Terrific build - would be great to see builders like this involved in production cars
i come back once a year to watch this! always walk away in a great mood :)
I'm in love with this car. I've watched this video like 8 times and any time people start talking about car videos I make them watch it.
This made me smile more than any TST videos I have ever seen, and I have enjoyed many! Thank you to everyone involved.. Fucking awesome!
