There is no clear record of when or by whom the exquisite Agrasen ki Baoli was constructed. However, many historians believe it was built during the Mahabharata period by none other than Maharaja Agrasen, the fabled monarch of Agroha. He is named after the stepwell or baoli. It was later reconstructed in the 14th century by the Agrawal community, who are known to be Maharaja Agrasen's ancestors. The stepwell's architectural elements further suggest that it was renovated during the rule of the Tughlaq dynasty (1321-1414) or the Lodhi dynasty (1451-1526).
This baoli was established to function as a community centre as well as a water reservoir. Women of the time are said to have congregated at this well, and the cool ambience of the baoli provided them with the ideal area to rest and spend some time away from the sweltering heat outside. The baoli's arched compartments were also used for religious rituals and celebrations.

By the way, arched cubicles were either utilised for religious events or simply as a decorative recess in a wall for displaying a statue, vase, font, or other object.

I did visit there 3 4 time, but before there was no barriers. The place where you can't go ( lots of bats are their in the gumbad nothing else is there)
And the well is dried it's like 15 feet deep and rest is covered with mud.

Such an interesting place, and what an enriching video!! I’ve also been seeing many such restrictions at monuments. Sadly a lot of them have to be put in place because of reckless, disrespectful damage caused by the public.

During heavy rainy season, I think around 60%of the structure get submerged under water. The openings may have chambers means to store large volume

@@wittySpace bawri mouth is open to upwards and in case there is no water you will find bats there... and i dont think there are any restrictions when there is no water.
