Welcome to our Weapon Legends content. As the Weapon Detective, we are investigating modern weapon systems of the Second Cold War. The Weapon Legends is about the older weapon systems, and we tell their epic stories, which made them a legend. The Weapon Legends investigates these stories, reads between the lines, analyse, and tells the untold. In our videos, you can find technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let the wisdom of history show us what the future will be. Let’s investigate the veteran weapons of the past together.

Back in the early 1980s, I worked as a junior designer for Gibbs & Cox, the naval architectural/marine engineering company which designed the FFG 7-class frigate. I worked on the arrangement and detail drawings and made alterations not only for the American ships but the Spanish versions being built in the Ferrol Shipyards in Spain as well. We were then awarded the new DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class destroyer contract in April 1985 and I was assigned to work on that. Sure missed working on those Oliver Hazard Perry blueprints though!

Those blind spots for the the armaments are insanely huge. I wonder if simply elevating the 76mm turret would help, essentially adding a few meters to the height of the neck/turret

Ship was only reclassified because of sortie fatigue. After 20 years the flight production was over and she needed to be steadily retired and relegated from the "blue navy" fleet to more littoral operations. Aka, Baltic.

I spent time on two Perry class FFGs from 1988 through 1990. USS John A Moore FFG-19, and a short deployment on USS Wadsworth FFG-9. I also served on the preceding Brooke class FFG, USS Ramsey FFG-2. The Perry class were a definite improvement.

Served onboard the USS Halyburton FFG 40 from 1986-1990, during the earnest will tours to escort tankers in the Persian Gulf. We had an experimental Australian sonar addition that found something in the waters we were in right after the Samuel B Roberts hit a mine, we went to GQ and backed out so as not to hit a mine.

The last ship in the video shown is the USS Rodney M. Davis FFG-60 in Yokosuka, Japan. I was stationed aboard the Davis there in Japan for just under a year when we shifted home ports to Everett, Washington. Is spent over 4 years aboard as an Operations Specialist. Unfortunately she was also used as a floating target North of Hawaii a couple of years ago.

In 1978 I was a junior sailor, Plank owner of the oliver hazard perry and we had our first great lakes cruise. In every city we had thousands if visitors waiting to tour the ship. The entire crew was treated like kings in those cities, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland etc. I served my first two years in the navy aboard that ship. The perry had a fine crew but the captain caused many sailors to go absent without leave. We had a lot of people deserting because of bad and poor leadership. However we were awarded at this same time with the navy and marine corp. Meritorious unit commendation, the highest award thus ship received in her 19 year service and we did it the first year of her service. I'm 63 now was 17 when I reported onboard in December 1977. Plank owner, Seaman apprentice USN

Turkey also used their Perry class in the Libyan civil war, escorting cargo ships carrying weapons and equipment in defiance of international sanctions of the country. During one incident the French navy's Courbet was illuminated by Turkish radar three times, before contact was broke. The Perry's also apparently engaged Libyan aircraft of the Haftar affiliated forces and also provided fire support against targets on land.

the chileans ohp, the adelaide class, are some of the newest and the better equiped ohp, suited like area air defense frigates with the sm2 long range aa missile and essm short range missile in 8 cells vls, also harpoon2 antiship missiles. this units had a extensive refit in australia in 2008.
the 2 chilean ohp are the FFG11 Prat and FFG14 Latorre. they replace 2 L class dutchs anti air frigates now in reserve.
a common chilean task force use a t23 asw frigate, a adelaide class anti air frigate and a M class multipurpose frigate together. Chile is the only navy in latin america that use specialized heavy frigates.
