    I must have flown an MD-90 once back in 2005. It was some kind of mad dog, but I vaguely remember these distinct engine sounds and that they were larger.
    I was 10 years old and throwing a tantrum about the flight because we had to wake up at 4 am for it.
    But then we got most of the plane to ourselves and I remember running up and down the aisles with my sibling and enjoying all kinds of vantage points, including the engine-adjacent seats.
    Seeing this footage made me tear up and made me grateful for the experience I got to have.

    We said it was the end of an era when American retired their MD-80’s, and it was... But now, it truly is the end of an era. Today, Delta Air Lines retired their remaining MD-88’s and the sole MD-90 still flying. This is the end of any reliable McDonnell Douglas passenger aircraft service. Yes, there are some MD-80’s still flying, but none of us are likely to board any of those anytime soon. Douglas/McDonnell Douglas has been a staple in the American commercial passenger game for nearly a century, and today is really the end of that. Again, it’s possible an MD-80 pops up from time to time, but you’ll no longer see MD-80, DC-9, or MD-90 on a regular basis when booking flights. And that my friends, is sad. Anyways, this flight was not only the final Delta MD-90 flight, but since N925DN was the sole MD-90 still flying, in the world, it’s likely this was the final MD-90 flight of all time. I have to be honest here. I knew going into this, that it wasn’t going to be like the American celebration we had for their MD-80’s. With Covid, the world is a different place than it was last September, BUT, this flight did not get the pomp and circumstance that the MD-88 got, and I don’t know why. Delta had a major celebration at IAD with national media. The MD-90 got an impassioned speech from the manager at IAH. No balloons, no fanfare, nothing... I know the MD-88 had a longer service life, and I know with its P&W engines it was simply more iconic, but the MD-90 had an almost 30 year service life as well. Not only that, but this was THE LAST MD-90 flying. IN THE WORLD. I have to say that again... This was THE LAST MD-90 still flying. It saddens me that there was so little fanfare given to it. Even when it pushed back after DL90 there were maybe 10 people watching form the window. On top of that, the fire department at ATL was late and missed giving her a water cannon salute upon arrival. You can actually see them behind the aircraft after I had deplaned. Too late guys. This aircraft deserved better. I hope my video helps its memory live on, because the MD-90 was an awesome aircraft, and this aircraft deserved better than she got today.

      Guys, CBS news showed up at the gate in Washington to show the final sendoff of the MD-80, just like American Airlines did. They gave passengers a thank you kit bag, just like American Airlines did. They decorated the gate with tasty goods, just like American did. American Airlines gave their last MD-80 a water salute, and Delta gave their last MD-80 TWO water salutes! Keep in mind, that with this pandemic, Delta limits their planes to be 60% full. Why put so much more work into this with only 90 people instead of 150? But I do agree with the point that they really should have taken more love into the MD-90, but I think the airline knew most of the av-geeks would be flying the MD-80, and that was the case. At least they still got a water salute for the MD-90, they still mentioned it was the final flight for that airplane, instead of quietly retiring it like what some other carriers do.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 роки тому +3

      The Comedy Pilot I agree with everything you just said. And I’ll be honest, I didn’t really expect much fanfare. I figured with the coronavirus, and the airlines really struggling, that Delta may do something small but I definitely didn’t expect there to be anything like we saw American do. It was truly a different time last September. I’m simply trying to say that I thought it was odd that Delta would have a celebration in Washington, despite the virus and everything else going on, but do nothing for the MD-90 in Houston. There were some regular passengers on this flight. But, the vast majority of the passengers were aviation enthusiast. And like I said in the original post, this aircraft served Delta for nearly 30 years. When the flight was over, and I started to see social media posts from people who were on the 88, it really saddened me that Delta put so much into that flight, and really did nothing for this one. Not only did this aircraft type serve Delta for almost 3 decades, but this was the last MD-90 flying, in the world. There are still MD-80s flying around the globe, I’ll admit, not many, but there are still 80s flying. This was the end of an entire aircraft type. And to have nothing, no balloons, no simple signs, no ceremony besides, who I assume was the manager of the Houston station, giving a small speech. That really made me sad. Also, keep in mind that the water cannon salute that we did get, was done by Houston’s airport authority. They were under no obligation to do that. So that was very nice. Anyways, that’s all I really meant. I hope I’m getting my point across. I’m not trying to bash Delta. I just thought it was sad that an airplane that served the airline for almost 3 decades left with almost no celebration. Anyways, I really hope this video will help the MD-90 live on, and is a tribute to its time with Delta.

      @@sla31 And I totally agree with everything you just said. I was actually really wanting to see someone film the final MD-90 flight, and glad that you filmed the whole thing. I guess maybe the Houston manager didn't think many aviation enthusiasts would fly the 90, but more so the 88. But I just didn't want people saying how American took much more pride in their retirement compared to Delta, cause Delta really didn't have a choice. But I once again will admit that I really feel Delta should have celebrated more for the MD-90.

    Ever since I first got into planes, the MD-90 always fascinated me. Unfortunately I never got to fly on one, but luckily yesterday I was able to board this plane and take some pictures. The Delta employees were so nice and generous! They even let us have some of the seat markers, so parts of this plane will always live on in the hands of enthusiasts. Great video, and great plane.

    Delta Air Lines and McDonnell Douglas proved a great partnership for more than six decades - not only that, C.E. Woolman and Donald Douglas knew each other personally. I'm sure they were smiling somewhere up there on the MD-90's final flight for Delta.

    Been traveling for work since 97' - flying out each Monday, and back home again on Thursday nights. I remember cursing these MDs for years - old, loud, etc. Its funny how now looking back, I sure miss these ol' MDs. They may be old and loud, but they are also durable and reliable. Sad to see all my old friends sent to the graveyard to be mothballed. Hearing those International Aero engines fire up brought back some good memories. Flew into IAH from Boston for a few years back in the late 90's. Early morning flights (back when being upgraded to first class was easy!), those engines lulling me to sleep. Continental used to serve meatloaf sandwiches, which was also their hamburger on another day. The plane would smell like those burgers from Houston to Boston! HA! I could sure go for one of those old burgers right about now. They were pretty bad, but hey, one for the road. Take it easy ol' girl - thanks for the many miles.

    man you know what would have been so cool is if the pilot did a power back from the gate opposing being pushed by a tug normally thats how these mad dogs did it in the 80s and 90s at certain airports a few may know what im talking about and some may not.

    • @muhammadabdullah03

      Yes indeed. The power back procedure is performed when the pilots use thrust Reversers on the ground to push the aircraft back under its own power. Sadly this iconic procedure has been bannned due to health and safety regulations at many airports...

But they held their own and did their part. I agree they may not have been as recognizable as the 88s but as you said this was the last MD90 flying IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!! Very interesting to view. It sure looks like the MD-88 was the more fun flight to be on. Lots of activity, announcements and more jubilant load of passengers. The MD-90 was very quite and sedate with quite a few empty seats and rows it looked like. It was a longer flight so you could have gotten up and moved around a lot longer time and done more. The MD-88 flight reminded me in many ways of the Last Scheduled Revenue flight of a TWA Boeing 707 in October 1983 from MIA-JFK. I was on board that flight and much like the -88 many of the passengers were sighing their names around the forward passenger door as they boarded. More folks did the same thing the next day when it was put on to replace the afternoon 727-31 used on the JFK-ORD-MCI flight to get the plane to the Mtc. base at MCI making money instead of having to ferry it empty. That became the Last Revenue Flight of their 707 but not "Scheduled" since it was decided to do it the day before. I was on both flights and both at JFK on Sunday and MCI on Monday night, similar to the MD-88 many of the passengers including myself pried off the Seat Row numbers and which side they were sitting on as well as taking the Emergency Cards and other things. Both of those were very fun and enjoyable flights. Jim "JET" Thompson Ret. US Airways.

    First,congratulations to you and DL for making IAH the origin of the last-ever -90 flight to ATL! IAH being my home airport,I only live a half hour north! My only experience with a -90 was TUS-ATL in Dec '14 coming home from a Christmas family visit,an -88 flown ATL-IAH. I have both segments on video but my desktop memory is apparently too small to handle the footage so has remained on my memory card all these years,unseen by anybody. How did you get from JLN to IAH? Any upcoming vids showing your progress? On another avgeek's channel,he flew the last -88 flight IAD-ATL but the major difference was that passengers were encouraged to use magic markers to inscribe messages on the sidewalls since the flight was the last ever passenger carrying flight,didn't see any evidence of that on your flight. How did you get home? Any upcoming footage of that as well? Was commenting elsewhere that avgeeks in general are either teens or twenty-somethings--other avgeeks' channels show that in abundance--crazy thing is that both the -90 and 88's final flights,the a/c was built long before those guys were born! Were the ATL ground staff gracious enough to allow for a ramp tour? Unless I'm mistaken,I believe Allegiant may be the last US carrier to fly the 80 series.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 роки тому

      I flew out of Tulsa for this trip. At the moment, with flight availability being what it is, it was easier to drive to Tulsa and take a direct flight on United, rather than try to connect through Dallas on American. The video of that flight is actually going to be Friday’s full flight episode. Also, you’re right, most of the people on my flight, and that I saw getting off of the MD-80 flight were young. Not everyone, there were some older aviation enthusiast’s, but a lot. I suppose younger people‘s enthusiasm often times is greater than those who have been around the block a few times. But, you’ll be happy to know that I am older than both of the aircraft that were operated on these flights. Delta did actually arrange for a lot of the people who were on the flights to go down onto the ramp. Unfortunately, I chose to go record the MD-90 being pushed back for its flight to the graveyard, and I didn’t realize that was going on. By the time the MD-90 left, they had already finished. Oh well.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 роки тому

      Oh, also, Allegiant has retired all of their MD-80’s in favor of A319’s and A320’s. The only, somewhat scheduled carrier, that I know of left in the US that is still operating 80’s is World Atlantic Airlines. They operate 11 80’s. Although, they may not be here after all of this virus stiff is said and done. According to online sources there are 151 MD-80’s still flying, only those 11 for WAA are in the US.
