  • In this weeks episode we meet an inspiring young woman who started with only $3000 and built an incredible tiny house for herself. You never know what you can accomplish until you try and that’s exactly what Sophie discovered when she set out to construct her dream DIY tiny house.
    This is a tiny home that has been beautifully crafted with love and creativity. To keep costs down, many of the items in this house have been pre-loved and up-cycled which helps to give the house a real sense of character.
    Now parked up on a dream spot in Byron Bay, Queensland, this home is surrounded by beautiful permaculture gardens and is totally off-grid, capturing rain water and with a good sized solar set-up. Sophie has all she needs in her little house.
    This tiny house project has also enabled Sophie to create a workshop space in her home, where she now weaves her own beautiful textiles on a vintage loom. You can find out more about her artistic work via her website: scribblygumwea...
    We hope you enjoy the tour of this remarkable tiny house and meeting the wonderful woman who built it. You can also find Sophie on Instagram: / scribblygum_weavings

    This handcrafted tiny house is a work of art. I really love stories like this one. For those who decide to take on the journey of building their own homes with no prior experience, often, it's one of the most difficult things they will ever do. It's often also one of the most rewarding. Sophie's story is a wonderful example of what is possible. We hope you enjoy this episode! With Love, Bryce & Rasa

      @Dain75 Рік тому +13

      I absolutely agree, the house is gorgeous. However, there is no way I'd be using a bucket, especially for 3 YEARS! What does she do with the waste? You can't just dig holes and dump it, in most places that is illegal. Even if it isn't you can pollute nearby streams or underground fresh water, and people use that water for drinking, bathing, etc.
      If she had a proper outhouse built or was composting legally that would be one thing, but after 3 years what does she do with it all?? Do the people that own the land know what she's doing? I wish she had said more than pointing to a bucket, because it makes me wonder if she's digging holes randomly or something.

That said, I was lucky to grow up in the area surrounding Byron Bay where this tiny home is. This region is considered by many to be the most beautiful location in Australia (green rolling hills, sub-tropical forests, expansive white beaches etc), with an almost perfect climate of 10-30 C for 95% of the year.

    Aaaaah! A fellow spinnner & weaver! Love this! My hubby & I just built a craft room for all of my various hobbies, & I’ve joked about hanging a hammock in there to just live in that space, & there Sophie has done just that! I’m inspired to follow through with it!

    This tiny house story is different and beautiful, I like that how she told that the loft didn't had the power/charging point so it will help her rest with no devices around ! Also saying that the experience has now made her ready to go with tools and her craft is really appreciated!!! Thanks for sharing this , it's really inspiring 💟♾️☮️

    I love the earthy, homely feel of Sophie's tiny. And what an inspiring setting! Absolutely gorgeous. And I got a very Beatrix Potter vibe from her home! Not sure where that came from, but it's a very good thing.

    I have to say that this is definitely one of my top 10 favorite tiny homes. She was extremely blessed and lucky to find the amazing windows and doors that helped her design her home. I love the use of the different woods and colors in the house esthetic and helping marry it with the nature found outside. I especially love that she has created the space to allow her to create the textiles which is how she now earns her living. Wool, spinning, weaving, and anything having to do with wool or can be created using it have always been dear to me from a young age because my eldest sister,who recently passed, was an amazing and gifted artist. She introduced me to spinning and weaving after she learned how to and had purchased her first loom. This was after she got married and she and her husband moved to a farm in West Virginia and she opened a craft and fabric store where she sold the various textiles she made. I was 6 years old and she sparked my love for creating pretty much anything by hand. I never chose one art from and have taught myself how to do many different types of things, but I always wanted to be like my eldest sister who was 12 years older than me and I looked up to her. We had always been close even though she was so much older. Having a space to be creative is a must for me.

    For anyone that may say something about her bucket system, my family actually had to do that for a bit. When I was in 9th grade (14-15yo), my dad, mom, 2 brothers, and myself built a house. We moved into it as soon as the all the framing was up. We used the bucket system for almost a year. Ours was outside away from the house, but it sucked. We had no protection from the weather, bugs, or any potential critters (snakes). Point being, as long as proper disposal is done, I have no qualms.
    Anyhoo, I like what she did with the little amount of money she had.

      Thank you for posting this. This set up is just temporary and has changed from it's initial design. It is on it's way to becoming something else. There are future design plans for a bathroom and studio that will be accessed via the to-be-installed backdoor. The whole thing with this build is that I have been able to do projects on the house as the money came in. This was for the case for everything. Power, plumbing, cabinetry. It was a shell when I moved in. So thanks again for getting it. 🙏Sophie

      @@sophie_marino No problem at all. I know how some people can be. Sometimes you have to do things that aren't pleasant or comfortable. If I could talk my wife into it (been trying), I'd be doing the same thing.

    I adored this woman’s calm spirit, I could tell she was an old soul and deep thinker. I visited her weavings site and it’s just the kind of thing I adore, handmade with love on the loom. I will definitely be buying one of her shawls soon. I love the old slow ways and ancestral tradition and she embodies that. I’m glad she can live her own independent life free of untenable massive mortgages and no creative time. She is truly living my dream, except I’m a painter and art jeweller. Thank you Bryce for inspiring us with all these little houses. For those who don’t know Byron bay is a place in NSW where all the creatives, bohemians, hippies, free spirits etc go live, but the houses are massively expensive for years now. So you don’t have to figure out other ways of being in that community.
