Even in a flat cap year, NHL GM's and executives salivate at the idea of the quick fix. Regardless or not of if they're still good three years down the road, bolstering a team with top free agents and acquisitions has always been a staple of the league. Most of them fall to shit quickly and are eventually bought out or traded in cap dumps (like former top free agent prizes in Keith Yandle and James Neal this year), but that doesn't stop the GM from his doom.
Many of these moves will probably be regretted down the line, but don't mention that to any of them now. Most of the moves are either gross overpayments or desperate acquisitions of what they hope a player will be, but that's the price to play this game.
This video is long, but a shitton has happened throughout the NHL. Let's dig in.

I've liked him since he was on the kings, he's always been underrated until recently. To get that save percentage in front of THAT D core is insane, I think he'll be more than a consolation prize for losing Grub

I used to be a Coyotes fan. Kuemper was literally the only good part of the team. There was probably 40+ complete defensive breakdowns leading to easy one-timers per game, but Kuemper kept making the saves to keep the team in the game. I’m sure the Avalanche will like him.

You made the best of a tough situation. Hopefully the Avs dont become Capitals 2.0. Astounding how the Yotes have had arguable the best off-season by a team not named Tampa or New Jersey.
The Flyers better go on a long run this year because we all know that they won’t make the playoffs in 2023. Even if they break the record for points in a season and win the Cup, they still aren’t making the playoffs in 2023. Need to make these even years count.

@@philly_sports1558 I get that looking at past history of this team makes it seem like there's a pattern, but there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that they will make the playoffs this year nor miss them the year after that. We'll just have to wait and see, same as always.

We have a rookie swedish RD in nils Lundkvist, and nemeth is a good analytical player and is also swedish so he is a good fit to pair with him. The nemeth contract was good and had nothing to do with wilson
The buchnevich trade had to do with us being unable to extend him(thanks kreider), nothing to do with anything that happened last year
I think tree is misunderstanding the rangers moves this offseason. They are still likely a playoff team next year if the young guys develop & shesterkin stays healthy

No. They just all know if they wait the Pegulas will either force Kevyn Adams to make a trade or fire him for someone that will do as they say. Adams has repeatedly said he didn't want to trade anyone. The Pegulas said trade or have fun on unemployment.
In the end hopefully just like the Bills they get bored and let Adams do his job. The Sabres could use the GM actually making the decisions. It is obvious they tripped into Granato being a genius that reminded Middlestat he isn't a trash player and reminding Dahlin he is not a defensive defenseman. He even tripped into Cozens not being crap just needing a little bit of work to develop completely.
Unfortunately they'll have to deal with Eichel being the last piece of the core going. The only upside is Thompson turns out to not be crap, but he is only gonna to be a middle 6 player not top line.

Actually, Tree has been pretty lenient with the Devils over the last few videos, even at times when I thought he should have really ripped into them. I'm beginning to think he's secretly a fan or something.
I liked the Devil's moves too! I hope Subban and Johnsson can kind of bounce back with more talent around them this year. I loved Andreas on the Leafs so if you can get that version of the player it'd help.

I'm fine with the Rangers moves honestly. There's still scoring talent with upside in Lafreniere, Kakko (maybe) with Mika and Panarin and then Fox leading the defense. This team was mentally weak with no real physical merit. Tom Wilson showed that. Honestly, I'm willing to see if the gambles work, it wasn't with the defensive pieces that were there last year anyways.
Agreed, plus with the gallant signing he's a far better coach than that poor excuse that we had with quinn. The rangers have no excuses this time, they have the talent and now it's time to put it to use
The Rangers have to show that they aren't just going to score against the Flyers, Sabres, and Devils from last season. Their entire RW core is unproven and their D is going to regress having to play other teams not from Philly, Buffalo, and Jersey. And their bottom six sounds good on paper but they're not going to score enough to offset their defensive capabilities.
It's all about how the young guys develop. We have to see if Lafreniere can take the next step and this year Kakko has to show us something. Anything

We don't even need them back, as much as I love them, we've needed either a hard push or a hard rebuild for a while, and as time goes on, the rebuild seems like the best option 100%, and idk if the hawks would keep Kane and Toews around through that.

good old days. it was only the beginning. ironically enough that’s one of the best contracts in hockey now
Some of the contracts being signed now will be viewed the same way in a few season. Not the Jones contract though lmao, as a CBJ fan that has watched him for half a decade now.
Some hockey fans are way to quick to call contracts overpayments and fans are always a few years behind on what players are actually worth. The Drai contract is a great example of that, it was an "overpayment" compared to what players got in prior seasons but good GMs offer contracts looking to the future, not the past. The Garland, Werenski, and Hamilton contracts are going to look really good in a couple seasons, especially after the salary cap starts rising again. Armchair GMs are at their wost when talking about recent contracts.
@@tsarXadam the reason why people are hard on the contracts is because guys are getting huge extensions coming off of bad if not terrible seasons at more AAV than they were worth when they were in their prime, let alone coming off such a horrid season
Seth Jones is a prime example of this. Zach Werenski had a better 2021 season than 2020 season on a team that had nearly all its players regress… and yet Jones got the same as Werenski did but for longer term???????? Werenski is also younger but i digress.
Point being, a guy like Draisaitl came off a good season. Darnell Nurse is inconsistent defensively and had his numbers boosted by playing with the best player on the planet and the aforementioned Draisaitl. Cody Ceci is much less extreme but had his offensive stats boosted by playing with arguably the 2nd best player in the world, gets a 4 year extension worth $2M more than he’s worth.
It’s not like these guys HAD to overpay. Hell, Jones and Nurse have a year left. They didn’t even hit the market ffs.
I love the Garland, Buchnevich, Carlo, Pelech contracts just to name a few. It goes to show that you don’t have to overpay to get good players lol. Might as well give up a 1st or two to get 2-3 years of an elite defenseman in their PRIME (since that’s what everyone is overpaying for) instead of giving an okay defenseman $3M more than he’s worth over the course of the next 8 years…
Free agency market is where teams have died in the past. Almost never does a team “win” by signing the best free agent. The only real one I can think of was Marian Hossa, but what he did was take less money on a per year basis and instead sign for like 12 years or whatever it was. It was shown with the Nuge contract as well. You get good value early but pay a price later once Father Time catches up. Nuge isn’t that type of 200 foot player like Hossa was so he probably won’t get ruined by injury but the same concept applies. Panarin lived up to his value (somehow) but it’s not like the Rangers care about winning. Teams win by trading assets for players that have value for their contracts. You don’t get value signing top end free agents to long term deals when they’re 30 and at bloated AAVs. Unless you’re the Oilers or Blackhawks, you can just pay the free agency tax on CRACK before they even sniff free agency. Brilliant. Why I wrote a paragraph about this I don’t know
