I learned "Trouble" (Trouble on My Mind, Don't Get Trouble in Your Mind) from George Gibson of Knott County, Kentucky. Other sources include David Hurt of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and a recording of Rufus Crisp from Floyd County, Kentucky. My instrument is a 4-stringed early gourd banjo handmade by myself. The tuning is BBE♭F♯ (A = 432 Hz).

The only thing wrong with this tune is that it's not longer. Luckily UA-cam graciously provides a "loop" button. And if my neighbor doesn't like hearing this tune 27 times in a row, well... He should get a better taste in music.
Friggin' love the sound of that gourd banjo!
So Lynchburg is in Moore County, which is a dry county. Guess that's why they gave him hell. 😆
Funnily enough they supply the world with Jack Daniels as well
I know I wouldn't have gone down there a second time.
Neither did Georgia...
Sounds great!
Hi, Tipper! I like it, too!
This is great!!
Pretty funny getting an army recruitment ad before this
I’m really enjoying the fretless banjo and your singing brings it all together
The instruments you have crafted are amazing, and even more amazing is your work in preserving an important culture.
lmao I just realized you're Old Leatherstocking
The sound is great on this video! I'm laying here with the headphones on and can even hear the bugs and birds which is a nice touch. I like the deeper tone of this gourd banjo, did you make that?
Thanks. It's the same banjo I built in this video: ua-cam.com/video/XEf5tyGii10/v-deo.html
@@CliftonHicksbanjo the history of the banjo is fascinating and tragic. originally coming over with the slave ships from africa.
You are a treasure Sir. Seriously. There’s an authenticity to your work that I haven’t experienced in quite some time.
Such a mellow, sweet sounding banjo ! I could listen to that banjo all day and night long with no trouble at all. Thanks for the look and listen Clifton sure made my day 👍👍
Man I love these gourd banjos, as you say they are super mellow sounding. I swear though I have never heard two banjos that sound alike. even production banjos of the same brand made the same year they all have a unique tone. I recommend Tom Phillips video ua-cam.com/video/vrTwKqd__kg/v-deo.html . cover of the same song with a larger gourd banjo ( I know Clifton has seen that too since he left a comment lol). I don't play any instruments but I sing some and the differences in banjos seem similar to the differences in people voices. You can have two baritones or two sopranos that are technically in the same range but everyone has a slightly different sound. I love it.
And here we find Clif in the Appalachian Jungl...err, I mean Mountains ;-). Great stuff as always. It’s so lush and green in the background. Up here in the Eastern panhandle it’s been dry, humid, and everything was brown through Dog days, but it finally rained three days after they went out.
Been unusually cool and rainy here all summer.
Not only is this a cool instrument, but you also play it incredibly well!
That strumming technique, especially!
My god, somebody hit a thumbs down, ha haaaa, idiots, cliffton, I had no idea about your past and your service until I came across a very old video of yours, today,!!! Clifton, I thank you for serving lime a proper soldier, so many people presume a soldier needs to be inhuman to survive and make the right decisions in battle but that's so far from the reality I'm in UK and I was serving queen's battalion ( territorial) in begging desert storm, I never deployed further than greece as UK government decided to not use territorials at that stage, bless you brother, my admiration for you is now at unsullied level, brother
Clif, your ability to create so many sounds from 4 strings, 2 hands, and 1 gourde always staggers me. Great performance.
Five strings on a banjo
@@bennichols561 Not on this one. Read the description.
@@ericross4125 i stand corrected
My God! You make that banjo sound so good!
Sir, you are an honest to God entertainer in the finest sense of the word. Thank you.
CLIFTON YOURE ON THE ROAD TO FAME. A TRUE ORIGINAL.
Im impressed i grew up in east Kentucky. Music reminds me of my childhood
Used to live in Knott County, some fine folks up that way and a lot of folks who can pick a tune or two.
I think I've met a few Byrds up in there, although I haven't visited in several years.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Haven't been back up that way in a few years myself. it's beautiful country I kind of miss it.
I used to et up on old mines they were shutting down and reclaiming on night guard duty. nothing for miles, great view, plenty of stars, listening to bluegrass all night and getting paid for it :)
I could listen to this all day! What a gorgeous instrument and setting. Thank you for this!
That's smoking clifton, totally love it, thankyou,
Used to work at the old folks home in cocke County, and am moving to the mountains in Norway. I will be learning the banjo from ya. Hope to upload some stuff for you to check out
Lovin that permaculture!!
One of my favorite songs, played on such a wonderful example of a gourd banjo. Delighted to be watching this video Clifton 😄!
Absolutely amazing as usual Clifton!
Love the song, love the backdrop of coneflowers and sumac.
Thank you once again for sharing this with us
Great job keeping these old mountains alive thank you
I really appreciate the design of the neck and peg head. Beautiful instrument.
I’ve listened to this version so many times. It sounds great sir.
You gave me tears of happiness!! 🥰
Wow, what a lovely sound it produces!
I love that neck. I plan to eventually make a gourd banjo, probably with a lot of trial and error, but I definitely want to do a thick neck like that. I found your channel about 6 months ago and had only been playing for about 7-8 months. I originally fell in love with Scruggs style but quickly realized traditional old time banjo is where my heart is at. Over hand doesn’t come as natural to me but it feels so much more rewarding the more I progress. Without your channel I would have never found all the old banjo music I love now. I know this video is 2 years old so you probably won’t see this but I had to comment on that neck. I love all the different style banjos and the unique sounds they make. Hope to have a nice collection one day. Thanks again and I look forward to learning more from your videos!
I'm way over here in montana...your stuff is really good man you're amazing I dig your work man thanks I have learned so much in a short time...rythem🤠
Nicely played! I first found you through Old Leatherstocking, but I never knew that a banjo could be created from a gourd
the history of the banjo is fascinating and tragic. originally coming over with the slave ships from africa.
Tiny desk
People still listen to NPR? 🤢🤮
right on. enjoyed
Awesome as always! Really neat to see the evolution of how you sing over the years
One more for Appalachia!!!
Do you still post on Patreon?

Merci beaucoup.
I’m getting a banjo at the end of this week hopefully I can learn the devil song I really like that one :) love you man
Troubled in kind....let the sun shine !
I'm doing some reenacting, portraying somebody from 1820. Would a gourd banjo be my most accurate option?
Yes. Every historical description of a banjo before about 1830 describes it as a gourd-bodied instrument. When strings are numbered, they're typically counted at 3 or 4. While there probably were 5-string, hoop-bodied banjos before 1830, most banjos were probably 4-stringed and made with gourds.
lesson 1: stay hell outen Lynchburg!
was it Tennessee or Virginia? don't matter. better safe nor sorry.
Always assumed it was Lynchburg, Virginia, which was a major hub in early days.
Great stuff!
Been feeling down, I needed this~!! Thank you Clifton🎵🎶💜🎵🎶🎵🎶💜
So good
Love this Banjo neck!!
Hello !... Thank You very much for that new tuning... Because I am interested in that simpliest tuning...
You convinced me, im making a banjer, that kentucky style looked real nice, now i just need to learn clawhammer. Great playing as always, its inspiring to see
the history of the banjo is fascinating and tragic. originally coming over with the slave ships from africa.
Such a cool instrument with a great sound
Really like the different key.
Just great stuff!!
Very nice, and cool banjo!
I want a gourd banjo!!!
Why haven’t I heard this guy sing before!! Great playing and singing
Awesome 👏
Excellent!👍
Beautiful mellow tones and smooth vocals. Perfect setting. Thank you!!!
This is the kind of music my Grandparents sang. They were from Black creek, N.C.
The echinacea look good
The banjo has a sweet sound
Well done on the song
Love that sound 💖 We are praying for TN
Fantastic 😊 thank you Clifton 👍
Enjoyed it, thanks
That's a amazing sounding banjo you've made there Clif! Now I want one haha
Bravo 👏
What key are you tuned to? Is this in A? Love this sound! It seems like it has really good volume. Trying to decide whether to build on of these gourd banjos or one the octagonals. Leaning towards the gourd banjo since the pot is less work, and I don’t have much of a shop set-up.
The gourd sound chamber is a little trickier, I guess, but overall is much easier than the mountain banjo forms. The tuning is relative gGBD (exact tuning is given in the video description).
Amazing work, I would like one of these, to go with all the other instruments that I cannot play.
Amazing
Like the banjo!! Nice mountain ash in the background!
Hell yeah. Keep on pickin'.
Deffo going to learn this what a great song !
Amazing picking!
So natural sounding and such a warm tone.
I want one of those so bad.
Great tune! Good playin!!
You my friend have got something spcecial
On that gourdjo bhoyyy
Fantastic!
Amazing instrument! Great performance!
I’ve been messing around with making a Canjo up in the shop I need to get around to finishing it.
That banjo sounds fabulous!
You sir, are a huge breath of fresh air.
Do you have a certain
basic tuning that you play out of, or do you use many tunings?🪕
I found out about you from the stuff you post on Herschel House's Facebook group. Been hooked ever since!
Amazing love it !
nice gourd banjer
Love how u.do this one everytime!
This is one of my favorites from your album! I love it and listen on repeat!
very good,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Dammit man! That was awesome!
Wow!!! You're amazing. I love your style man. Just picked up a banjo about a month or two ago. I'm getting a lot better but heck I'm definitely going to sign up to your videos really digging this style
a1 man ! I subscribed after the first five secs :D
you look like the guy from burn notice
That's my cousin. Him and James Franco.
that's a beautiful instrument! looks a lot like the banzas from Haiti
what microphone do you use to record videos with?
I record these using a Canon M50 camera with a cheap RODE video microphone mounted atop it.
