Blackface used music and comedy as a delivery system for racist tropes and became the most popular form of entertainment in the Victorian era. Actor David Harewood explores the origins of Blackface minstrelsy, where white performers grotesquely darkened their skin, in early 19th-century America. How did it shape ideas of blackness in popular culture and why did it endure for so long?

60’s and 70’s? I had no idea blackface existed that long on tv
Soul Man (1986) and Tropic Thunder (2008). Don't forget those movies.
Through the 1980’s.
Yeah, me neither. Even seeing on TV in old movies was rather jolting (I grew up in the '60s & '70s).
Damn. I thought we were messed up in the US. 1978!!!!!!! Holy crap.
The blacks in the United States right now are beyond racist they walk right up to white people and say the most racist things and get away with it every single time.
In the contest of the times … in which people had been raised with racism which was unfortunately the norm, but many did appreciated the music, dancing and costuming. It is a serious discussion and a complex one.
Such a strange and widespread cultural phenomenon. People are f-ked up.
Actual black people do not look like any of those black face characterizations. 😮
It is so funny. what is so bad. I am black and so what? I can wear a white face or any color. Make such a big deal out of everything that doesnt teally matter and ignore the things that really matter
If you had any common sense or self dignity you would see from the video that its not just about a mask...it's to degrade a certain group of people and when someone complains about it,, they expect the same reply you gave. What an embarrassment you are.
I don't even understand why it was done. Did it have some specific entertainment value? Was it meant to mock black people?
It was really an Amerikan phenomenon, even white Europeans were into that sort of thing.
It's never been spelled like that. Just saying.
Google the 1991 Lenny Henry film 'True Identity'.
Compare and contrast.
Yeah. Except white people don't really care if you mimic them. Huge difference. Copying the dominant ethnic group isn't considered racist. It's considered survival.
One white-face movie Versus Hundreds of blackface movies. That's your compare and contrast.
@@paultrought267well to be "fair" there's more than one, but yes, it's an absurd comparison.
@@paultrought267 how many blackface movies have there been since 1991?
@Appophust is it really an absurd comparison,
Is it just the sheer number of blackface movies that people object to? Or the prejudicial, demeaning portrayal of other races?
Because if its the latter, surely objecting to blackface but dismissing whiteface entirely is hypocritical
David Harewood is in no position to pontificate on this subject.
Womp womp who cares
You obviously
@@designatedpiledriver8216 absolutely not, some will always want to be victims as an excuse
Because it's another ugly part of the history. We have so many horrific things that humans are doing to each other. We see daily things are happening that have been hidden and it needs to be brought out.
Why are you afraid?
Not surprised at the remark about white people in "black face" from david hardwood, this would be expected from someone like him.
