I agree. It took one year of misery at an awful job for me to recognize what everyone who said "life is short, do what you enjoy" really meant. You never know what will happen.
Frozen, U da man, Bruh! Initially you said I'm doing 36 miles. Geez, even when I was your age I never ever thought about doing anything over 20...averaged around 15. Thanks for taking us along. That was a porcupine climbing the tree for a safe night's sleep. My problem was I stopped so many times during a hike to take in the beautiful vistas especially in the Alps, the Rockies, Sierra Madre, San Juan Mountains, West Maui Mountains and so on. Serving in the military for 23 years afforded me so many opportunities to hike around the world. I love your sense of adventure and it's obvious you enjoy the beauty of nature. Sorry about your Dad but he's a real hero in carrying on even with his challenges. I learned how to scuba dive from a paraplegic who was the CEO of his own company...talk about heroes. Now that I'm 71 I no longer do the long treks but I still pack 25 to 35 pounds in my bushcraft pack and do my thing. Nature offers too many lessons to learn and too much beauty to quit. As long as my feet move I'm out there. Hope to see you on the trail someday.
I just got into Backpacking and Hiking. Wanted to take a second and thank you for all your videos. They have been informative and have helped me make educated decisions on what gear I should start out with. So thank you for all your doing on this channel.
Thanks for another great video😊 i live a bout 1/2 hour from the park and just discovered your channel recently, you are inspiring me. I am 9 years into recovering from a stroke, planning to buy a recumbent trike this winter, i have had the bike path thru the park on my to do list for a long time, but never considered doing anything there except maybe ride the OC&T(thats the tourist train) but after seeing your videos I think I might be able to ride part of the Gerard on a fat tire trike😉 I was sure that dog was a small bear and wondering why you weren't commenting on it, the climbing critter I had no clue but I see some folks seem pretty sure it was a porcupine so I'll agree with that. Thanks again, keep em coming
Ya know, it just hit me why I like your videos so much. When you walk and commentate about something you come across on the trail that is unique or interesting, you talk out loud like I would imagine saying it in my head as if I had run across what you are looking at myself. I think the same things you do when looking at things like the tree crashing loudly when it fell and then how it is balancing on itself. Great videos and always fun to watch. I am going to hike this trail soon hopefully. I am maybe an hour and a half from the park, except I will not be doing it in one day, more like three haha.
Wow Jason I have been wanting to see you on a day hike. And oil creek is a great one althought you went much farther then what I can do I usely go about 15 to 20 at the most I have the same day pack and love it. Great colors I don't get any of that down here in Florida thought. Another awesome adventure Thanks.
I love your videos and love the format you use. Continue being you and I will continue to watch. I LIVE outside the USA and have not had the opportunity to hike the trails you do. Thanks again, have fun.
Great fall colors! I liked what you said about mileage, that everyone hike their own hike. It doesn't matter if one is a 20 mile per day or 2 mile per day. Just get out there! 😀
Exactly. Everyone hikes differently. Sometimes I even prefer to have a chill trip now and then but most of the time I love seeing as much as I have time for. It's like going to an amusement park and trying to get all the rides in before you go.
seems like an awesome trail! wish there was a trail like near me, the best one i got is 6.5 mile loop so i just do multiple laps but it gets super crowded by like 10am
I've been very fortunately with my location, i have several areas I can hike within 2 hours of me. Remember though if you have some time to escape do some of the far away trips, they seem more special when looking back.
Great Job!! I was actually thinking about how you were doing with this hike last Friday. A few more miles than what I did last week meeting Adventure Archives. LOLL....
You're an inspiration my friend. Way to push yourself. One of my goals has always been to try and complete the 34 mils VA Creeper Trail in one day. I might give it a shot soon.
Awesome work! I am grateful to you for introducing this park. Strong verbage I know but I have gotten some good expirience and made some great memories. I've been twice this year and it's becoming my favorite. I've only explored a small portion but it's an awesome place. I was just there the 20-22nd and the weather was amazing! P.S. Just a thought, your uncle, would totally be interested in some informational videos on hunting. Thanks for all you do!
That's what he's basically doing his channel about. I'm getting his footage sometime later this week. So hoping by next week we have the first content to go out.
Great job on this high mileage day hike! If you put 3 of these days together, you could have the Shenandoah section of the AT knocked out.. Glad you're uncle can still enjoy hunting and the outdoors..
Props to ya, my man! Great accomplishment, great views, great conversation, and love your drive and enthusiasm. You should do the Fred J. Cusimano Westland Overland Trail in Western N.Y. near Sherman and Panama. It's about 24 miles and lots of variety, but would be an enjoyable trip. I think you'd like it. Thanks again for sharing!
Good job on your little "day hike!" Next up try for 50 in a day. For me hikes like this help you learn your own limitations, which one day could prove to be useful. The first time I did something like this was more by accident than trying to hike 37 mi in one day. After hiking that distance it got me wondering just how far I could hike in a day with full gear. I set out to hike 50 in a day, but rolled my ankle about 23 mi.into the hike. I finished hiking 47.6 mi., but my ankle was just too swollen and painful to continue on. I know I could have finished the 50 miles, but I've not attempted it since. Like I said it really is about discovering your limitations and that hike did the trick.
+G I could have kept going honestly. I was thinking about doing 40 by making the loop back up and down the road. I'm glad I didn't though the next day I had a bit of trouble walking on my foot because it was so tender.
sure looks like a porcupine on the big screen.. Awesome!! scary story about your uncle, i knwo how you feel, i work mostly for people who became paralyzed by breaking their necks.. makes oyu appreciate everything but at the same time impressive what people can do even without being able to move ... Crazy Mileage on this one Well Done Sir!! thanks for another great video, after watching this one we are straight up the on a hike of our own!
White Mountains next year???? Come on, Man! You know it ain’t closed in the winter, right? Just like you, I have an area up there I can’t stay away from. Don’t know why - very rugged. I’ve been there ever season. Love watching it change. G/L next year! Keep on Truckin ‘!
I might have missed it but what was the link to the other UA-cam channel you mentioned earlier in the video? I’d love to check it out and subscribe. Once again you have me pumped to hike this!
I would like to try this loop with the timey wimey twins (age 14). I plan on starting at or near the wolfkiel shelters stay there the night (we need to start late on a friday). Then have a long day Saturday to the Cow Run Shelters (counter clock wise map reference). Then Sunday back to car near Wolfkiel shelters. My concern is day 2 could be just over 21 miles unless I shorten this with the cross trails. Do you know of any cross trails that are good to shorten the loop for two kids who are not ready for 20 miles? The most they have done was 14 one day and 16 the second.
There are a couple days to make the loop shorter. Check out the map and find the bridge that goes right over the water and the train tracks. It cuts off about 4 miles I believe.
Glad to see you got the NERO out for some trips..people dont need a big backpack..im sure u fit everything in there just fine..UL is the way to go..it gets a bad wrap..
I hear ya on that..the price of the gear doesnt help the case either..lol... garbage companies are definitely the best though, no doubt..too each there own....HYOH
Thank you for the your video it's always interesting to see it where do you go what do you do what do you take all the good stuff later when you get the chance do the review and those hiking poles I got myself a set of Cascade Mountain aluminum which are very light weight and can hold up a 157 157lbs person which is me so again thank you for the video and I hope you have yourself a wonderful happy Halloween
Quick question: Dolly sods is on the agenda for next year, thoughts on the best time to go? Thanks! Also, my OA tshirt suffered a major injury... Consider putting up another run?
Yes I am in the process of getting a store setup on TeeSpring so that people can create orders whenever they want. What happened? Dolly Sods is beautiful in the summer and early fall. I would avoid it in the spring as a lot of the trails are VERY wet. check out my spring dolly sods video to see trail conditions.
Wish i could tell you some awesome trail story but alas, my dog likes to steal my clothes and run around with them and now it has a big hole:( Adventure archives has a video of Dolly Sods over Christmas and it's super tempting to go that late but I really don't have enough experience yet. Congrats on the store! They were super nice shirts and the customer service was great. Both graphics this time? Us viewers are too demanding!
+Trail Cat yup a text version and a graphic version.that sucks. My dog stays away from clothes but my cat loves to hide my socks. Lol. Dolly soda in winter would be beautiful. Might be hard to get up to lions head though. I myself am not very comfortable leaving with my experience in snow either.
I don't know if you are familiar with the OC100, but it is a race/challenge held on this trail every October. Runners/hikers are given the option of a 25K (one lap around the trail), 50K (two laps) or 100 miles (three laps + a short distance). All distances runs must be completed within 24 hours. This is the second year that I was privileged to be invited as an event photographer for the race. I was set up in the 3 or so miles between Russell's Corners Rd. and the Cow Run Shelters (about 11 minutes into your video). The race was held October 14th. Here is a link to my photographs of the event - www.flickr.com/photos/33326615@N03/sets/72157661921889818/ You can learn more about the event at www.oc100.org
I have a personal question. Did you get into hiking before or after the injuries to your legs? I've seen the scars, and it looks like the injuries were pretty serious. Sorry if it's a topic you'd rather not discuss.
I don't mind discussing it. When I was in third grade I got hit by an SUV on the way home from school one day. I was in the hospital for about a month but went through about a year of physical therapy afterwards. I had no broken bones and luckily I had a full backpack that day because doctors said it more than likely saved my leg from being amputated. The other leg I have a scar from being a kid and playing around a glass aquarium and ended up falling through it. That was just a few stitches so nothing major. But the car accident, having grown up and thinking about could have happened, I am very lucky to be hiking these days.
Outdoor Adventures I've seen two in my life, both in Cooks Forest, PA. Was hiking a trail and it ran off in front of me, to the right. Scared the shit out of me. Idk what I thought they looked like, but it wasn't that, lol.
Great Job putting down the miles. Early Riser is where I learned that porcupines climb like that. Pretty sweet that you caught one in action. Is that your phones default activity tracker or are you using another app?

What a great achievement! Something about crushing those 30+ miles days that is truly fulfilling.
The poles handled great too, thanks for giving me the opportunity to test them out. I'll have that review next Thursday.

Trails conditions are awesome right now. Should be a good time.
CONGRATULATIONS Frozen on your new record, that is awesome!!!! Thanks for taking us along. Ut-ohhh Gary ... ya’ better get that pack on! 😂
Thanks! I think Gary is gonna step it up and do the AT next year so he'll have me beat pretty fast.
Nice! I've done the Gerard Trail a few times now and you can't go wrong. It's been cool seeing you progress as a hiker.
Thanks!
WOW! Great job. Oh to be young and in shape again :) Thanks for taking us along and thanks for sharing.
+TrailSlug enjoying it while I can right? Thanks for watching.
Wow Jason I have been wanting to see you on a day hike. GOT YOUR SHIRT FITS PERFECTLY! LOVE THE FEEL OF IT TOO! BE SAFE! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! THANK YOU !
Glad to hear that! I ended up buying 4 colors and a few mugs for coffee =P
Very inspiring vlog.
I love your videos and love the format you use. Continue being you and I will continue to watch. I LIVE outside the USA and have not had the opportunity to hike the trails you do. Thanks again, have fun.
Very nice video...good job as always.
Wow, that was quite a hike, kudos. Thanks for sharing.
Well done Frozen. You're a beast.
Haha thanks!

Good thing you've done it a bunch of times, all of those fallen leaves look like they really were hiding the trail.
+Troy Taylor they trail is very well marked. It was even marked with reflective tags for night hiking.
Well done!
Thanks for the video I enjoy them ,

I want to do that as well!
Outdoor Adventures if you wanna do it early next year let me know and we can help shuttle each other since it's a point to point.
Congrats! As always a very enjoyable video. Keep up the good work!

Just did 13 miles of this, absolutely awesome!
Once again awesome video!
Thanks!
GREAT STUFF I ENJOYED THAT
Nicely done! I'm lucky if I can do that many miles in a month.
Awesome. Need to check out Quebec in Fayette county one weekend
Will do!

I think it gets a bad rap partly because there are some UL'ers out there that take it too far. As Andrew Skurka once stated, don't go stupid light.
I hear ya on that..the price of the gear doesnt help the case either..lol... garbage companies are definitely the best though, no doubt..too each there own....HYOH

I've been waiting for this
I cheated by following him on facebook! lol You should have done this challenge with Jason.
Yea it would of been cool
The animal you saw running up that tree was a porcupine! they are known to be in that area.
MUG THE SAME COLOR AS MY TEE SHIRT TOO!

where would you suggest parking if you wanted to make it a three day, two night, trip?
+brent barbe petroleum center. It has a lot a few miles from cow run.
thanks.
Rynd Farm is another good parking/starting place. It’s 8.8 miles from Cow Run, about 12 from Wolf Keil
porcupine, climbing the tree

I couldn't even tell until after I got home and reviewed the footage. It was my first porcupine sighting

Is that your phones default activity tracker or are you using another app?
I have a Google Pixel. so it's the default tracker. I'm sure you could download the Google Fit app if your phone has a pedometer in it.
+DragonsTrails I hope he does another trail soon. Really miss watching him.
Love all your videos. I can't wait to try out some new places that you have in some of your videos. Question for you, do you use some sort of gimbal for recording your videos? I'm going on a trip out west and would love to get one before I go but have no clue what to buy.
No gimbal but I do use a monopod or stickpic depennding on how I'm feeling. I have a video on all the electronics I used. Think you can find it just by searching my channel for electronics.
Outdoor Adventures Thanks for the info. Some of your videos seem so smooth, I could have swore you used a gimbal in them they looked so good. 👍
I think a lot of people just have a death grip on their cameras lol. Gotta keep it loose let your arm absorb the impact.
WHICH GO PRO DO YOU HAVE? MY GRANDDAUGHTER FOR HER SUMMER TRIP 2018 / PART OF IT / WILL BE TAGGING SHARKS THIS SUMMER COMING FOR COLLEGE! Jason, you might be interested to know that a 700 pound black bear was killed during this hunting season either in or near Oil Creek State Park (Miller Farm Road).
+Daniel Helmbrecht holy crap!
I think that was an opossum. Uncle Jeff will know!
that is a DAy
That's a long way! Nice job.. we just subbed! If you have a sec check out our page. Thanks!
Well done!
