omg thank you SO much for posting this! I'm about to complete undergrad with a degree in music business and am taking a gap year, but am prepping to apply to masters journalism programs :-)
Bianca, I soooo appreciate this video. I'm an undergrad (junior) in journalism and really interested into the documentary tract at Columbia. just plotting on how to get in + fund this.
I know I'll sound unkind, but this is where I am: as a jounalist, with the trend to visual media, as a woman, age does you in. Despite the law agaunst age discrimination, after forty, or over, if you don't keep a young look, your path has to change to behind the camera.
Girl! When you read your diploma! LOL! Thank you for your perspective and congratulations on your job! I'm looking at the J-school as well as UC Berkeley and trying to figure out my best choices. I have a question for you: Does the school teach in AP style or another style? I've heard different things. Also, what was your experience as an African American student? i.e. on campus, surrounding area, etc. Thank you and again, congratulations! Oh and this video is 20:11. Not 10. You said no fake news... :) lolz!
I have heard great things about UC Berkeley also. I have a friend that completed their program. We used AP style for most things. I had a lot of video/audio courses, so the print courses I had is a blur to me. Since I lived in NYC as a teacher a year before I was adjusted to the city. It can be overwhelming if you haven't lived in a big city before. The upperwest side and Harlem is very multicultural. Gentrification in Harlem is very alive and well...which gets mixed feelings as you can imagine. I didn't notice my experience being any different as a black student compared to other students. I will say the population is EXTREMELY diverse, people from all over the world attend Jschool. I think being a minority can work as an advantage, because you have different stories to tell. I believe the school is open new ideas and isn't looking for cookie cutter stories. Girl! I tried to make the video ten minutes, but just didn't happen....too much to say on the subject! You understand don't you!!! lol.. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
Hey, Congratulations. excellent video and explanation. I would like you to help me with information about the PHD in Communication. I would like to know about the academic level, how good and complicated it is. I would like some advice on how to be accepted because I would like to study there. Thank you.
Really appreciate this video - awesome content! Question: How many outside scholarships does Columbia accept? Do they give you a list to apply to or you went out and researched on your own? Also, did their career center help you get any interviews? I recently read somewhere that the Masters Program in Journalism is 9 and a half months, is that true? I’m also looking to go into broadcast but want to concentrate on sports. Congrats on the full-time job in Virginia! If you don’t mind me asking, how long did it take to get that job? And since NYC is a media hub, was it tough to get an opportunity out here after you graduated? Thanks so much!
They gave me a list of various scholarships from the school. You would have to ask them about outside scholarships they accept, I'd assume they accept all because it's money to pay for school. Yes the career center is as helpful as you want it to be. They aren't going to chase you down to give you an interview.
@@TheOfficialBiancaMedia Thank you! Would keep this in mind. Although still a lot of uncertainties on the possibility of face-to-face interaction due to the health crisis.
Hey!!! So I just found out I was admitted off of the waitlist today. Pretty excited until I saw the Enrollment Fee. Any tips on acquiring those funds in such a short time?
Do documentary students have to stay longer (and pay more)? and also is there any overlap between specializations? for example, i’m into both docs and international stuff, so could i take classes in both?
Yes, doc students have an extra semester. You have to have time to finish the documentary. Your schedule is pretty much set, but in the second semester (spring) there is an opportunity to take a class of your choice. I took a nightly news class.
I'm sure there is grant/scholarship money for international students. A good majority of our class were from abroad, I definitely remember two students from New Zealand. I'd be sure to apply to as many scholarships the school offers. That's one regret I have, I didn't apply to everything, only a few. Reach out to the office, they are pretty responsive.
Vaishnavi dandekar no, but I had no experience and I was very far behind everybody else. Got my Master’s, but no job. Many job listings require prior internships and experience, which is bull.
no but see if you can shadow someone in a newsroom or at a production company so you have an idea of what you want to focus on. many companies are open to informational interviews
it was def a job to find a job for me. i was applying to things hours each day. have you checked in with the career service department, i stayed in their office. also when i was there they had a career search website that was helpful . are you still looking? I can email you some postings i see

Women do have more challenges..we have to find ways to stay relevant and engaging.
Wonderful! Congrats!

Does Columbia offer assistantships where it will waive your tuition if you become a TA?
Gracie James not in this program.

Amira Fair stop by the admissions office and ask about any grant money you can apply for.

TheOfficialBiancaMedia Oh cool, thanks for the reply. so it costs even more for the doc program?
@@jonathano9382 Yes, because you stay an additional semester. There are scholarships you can apply for.
Where did you end up working, and how long did it take you?
I landed a job at a local station in Virginia as a reporter.
Hi! love the video. Do you know what opportunities for scholarships/financial aid are like for international students are like? New Zealander here.
