Weird the legs deployed before liftoff in this simulation.

@Ubisoft Rebel The M Meiselph account is probably some fake one and it's from the Blue Origin. They've commented under their own video to point audience to this change. They've actually uploaded video 4 weeks ago but haven't published it until yesterday. That's how conspiracy theory is born :P. The other thing could be that this video was being shared internally in the company and someone just commented :)

No re-entry burn?
Wings and fins allow for a more shallow re-entry. A shallow (low angle) re-entry results in less intense heating over a longer time. This means they don't have to do a re-entry burn to slow down to keep from heating up too quickly.
Brian, not sure about that. A to shallow re-entry was already a space shuttle issue. I think, the re-entry burn is just missing in that video.
Brian Habing the re-entry burn does more than slow it down... it also creates a subsonic flow region around the booster that decreases aerodynamic loads, pressure, and heating. It pretty much was one of the missing pieces in getting F9 boosters back in decent condition. I would be skeptical of BONG coming back even on shallow entry. Even the shuttle has to do S turns to burn off that speed & heating and it was TPS’d to the gills.
@@thomaslinz8528 BO always said that they don't intend to do a reentry burn. And the speed of the first stage will be far less than the speed of the shuttle.
@@draymer72 Shuttle re-entered from orbit, whereas NG booster will be coming back from MECO/Sep, substantially below that.

Starship is a concept at the moment. It does not exist. All the engineering for New Glen is done and the concepts have been proved in New Shepard.
@@thethirdman225
Neither New Glenn or Starship are entirely conceptual, hardware (engines, test vehicles, landing barges, etc) have been / are being built for both.
@@jeffvader811 New Glenn is already in train. The construction shed has been build and the support infrastructure, like the water tower is already under construction. New Glenn is a lot further down the track than Starship. The difference is that we don't get a lot of information from Blue Origin about what they're doing, compared with blizzards of Tweets from Musk.
@@thethirdman225
Yeah, I'd say New Glenn is probably about a year or two closer to orbit than Starship. Still, I don't think it's fair to call either vehicles conceptual.

Build it!
I dont care if this is the SpaceX way to reuse boosters, this proves that SpaceX did a great job with this technology and other should definitely use it as well so the market gets even bigger and better.
13Nicob blow origin was actually first to land a booster (although not orbital) and come up with the concept of a drone ship landing and actually patented it
This was Blue Origin's idea from inception, SpaceX is further along only because they chose to build expendable Falcon 9's, which brought in launch contracts much sooner. Musk doesn't have Bezos' fortune (I believe he was worth less than 10 Billion when Falcon 9 was born), so SpaceX needed to turn profits to pay for R&D into reusability.
Landing boosters like that is not "SpaceX way". We managed to land boosters already decades ago vertically, but the gouverment stopped funding it after just one failure.
The project was quite similar to the grasshopper project.
Regardless of whether you want to call it the SpaceX way or not, SpaceX have shown its a good way to do it. For other companies to just ignore that and try to develop their own unique way would just be stupid and costly.
@@aelux4179 Why? Looking for new ways instead of using the same method as always won't bring us forward. Now yes, there are certain fields where new ways aren't necessary, but in other fields there is. Hell, even Elon himself once said that there are better methods for reusing rockets and boosters, but our technology is simply advanced enough yet and require other things before that.
Also you forgot the aspect of competition. Blue Origin does have for example different parts for steering than the Falcon 9 does, which can be considered better. Without competition, there would be no pressure and therefore no real advancement in technology. A company like SpaceX could just say "yeah, the Falcon 9 is the best humanity can do", while secretly hiding the truth about that, while making a shitloan of money. This is not some stupid conspiracy-crap, that's what companies would do if there was no competition. Stupid and costly? Important and necessary!
Also "SpaceX way" didn't prove anything by now. The Falcon 9 loses very much of it's efficiency because it has to be reusable, to a maximum of 5 times (at least the Block 5 as far as I know, could be more tho). And even here, only the first stage is being recovered. It has to go through expensive measures to make it fly another time, land and go is not what's happening right now.
The only way we will see if this is really that good in terms of money or not, will be when BFR is finally finished and did multiple reconveries with just one booster. I'm optimistic tho.
Like I said, to further advance in space travel, there HAVE TO BE other companies competing and trying their own unique ways. If we allow a market monopole there to happen, it will only damage and slow down our future.
Didn't mean to insult you in any way, but I'm sick and tired of reading all those wanna-be genius comments like "Jeff who?","Blue Origin sucks, we should only trust SpaceX", or even shitting on NASA without even knowing that without the help of NASAs technology, money and even staff, SpaceX would lack behind Blue Origin by a giant path. I don't know what happened in 2017, but since then the fandom has become so stupidly toxic and childish, I almost lost my entire interest I had in SpaceX, and I have talked with some people who felt the same way. It's turning away those who actually give a shit about rocketry and space travel, instead of sucking Elons dick.
Fuck even I am toxic as hell now
that's a fancy Falcon 9
r/wooosh
It doesn't even have 9 engines, though.
falcon 9 is waaaaay more fancier. 100%
Haha it really is like a luxury edition of a Falcon 9. Bigger payload capacity, much larger fuel margins for recovery (given a typical commsat payload), cleaner propellant, an upper stage with far greater efficiency, landing legs with a lower mass fraction, and a sexy exterior. Even the ocean landing platform is better, it appears to be faster than the ASDS, so the stage is back at the launch facility much sooner.

Yo, we changed the LOGO and the Landing Legs, let's do a new video
Anyway, glad that they are updating how the rocket will look
The second stage and fairings have also changed significantly.
In only two years, they have changed the landing legs, the second stage motor, the fairing and the logo.
Not only that, they have replaced the square-tube construction of the erector to a round-tube design!
.
All just in cgi, of course.
@@marvinkitfox3386 That seems like a good sign. Constantly changing designs like SpaceX doesn't show much confidence. The third stage design work can now be applied to the second stage, so nothing major there (no tooling changes). The fairing looks different and the logo looks different. That's minor.
They also added more thermal protection to the aeroshell that surrounds the engine cluster.
it looked better before this just looks like the f9s
I find it interesting there is no re-entry burn shown in the video. Even Falcon 9 has to do that for an RTLS. But shown here is a full ASDS like landing, which means the booster is traveling much faster as it’s on a ballistic trajectory.
Maybe it’s just for the marketing bluff though.
No. It's ballistic. The first step is always hard. I m sure they will try and learn.
Not doing a re-entry burn saves fuel and might allow them to advertise a higher payload capacity to orbit. Perhaps on the first test flight they will try this and if it fails they may resort to taking the performance hit and require a re-entry burn.
David Manning
I don’t really see any heat protection on New Glenn, most areas where there will be a lot of heat is white like Block 4 F9.
A re-entry burn is required, the heat and aerodynamic stresses are too much.
David Manning
Also look on a block 4 Falcon 9. On their aluminum gridfins, you can see that they can be in extremely bad shape.
Plus, not doing one also makes the landing burn much more risky. It won’t be able to glide as well in the atmosphere while smashing through the atmosphere meaning that it would not be able to make course corrections as well.
Falcon 9, being much slower can move without too much stress and that allows for it to divert if an issue arises. CRS-16 for example.
@@sinecosine7493 The New Glenn uses its strakes (those big fin-like things near the base) to provide lift that makes the New Glenn's re-entry far more gradual, resulting in far less heating. It does a "boostback" burn to null out most of the downrange velocity, then uses the strakes to provide a lofted, gradual low-heat entry profile.
Its entry should be a lot gentler than an F9.
So, no, no re-entry burn should be needed.
market competition is important people!
