  • This video shows my favorite gear for going out and bring firewood back in a truck and trailer. I often get asked by several people if I would like to haul away logs from their property. I've spent years researching and buying the best equipment and gear for logging. Since I often go to properties unseen for logging, I bring everything needed for a successful outing.

Without a doubt this is the most prepared firewood cutter on the planet!

This is such a timely video since I just went camping over the weekend. Cool tips and awesome B roll!

You covered everything you need and more! Brought back some good memories too. I harvested firewood all through high school and had much of this minus the tongs and marker (I used the 16 inch bar on my saws to gauge where to cut logs) . I would haul Apple and oak logs from the dry lowlands up to my town in the perpetually damp Redwood forests (California redwoods burn poorly) and fill a pretty ill tapped niche. (In CA really good firewood can sell for well over 375 a cord in the right places)

Wow, that's some crazy prices in CA. I use the bar technique for measuring when I don't have the other marking tool.

Am I using any of your favorite forestry equipment and gear? If not, what is your favorite tool or item?

Great video Mark! I might have to pick up a few of those items before I start cutting down a few dead trees on my property.

    Great video.
I agree it is definitely important to have two chainsaws or at least two bars. Sticking your bar and having to go home or to the store to get a second bar sucks. A couple times with really large trees I have stuck 3 bars, even while using wedges, so I bring 2 chainsaws and 5 bars any time I am cutting big logs.
Thanks for the tip on the length paint marker. The stack looks a lot nicer when the firewood is all the same length. I try to get my firewood as close as possible to max length so I can fit as much firewood as possible and sometimes my pieces don't quite fit. Usually I find out they are to long when I can't quite jam them in the stove. Then, I have the fun of dealing with getting the smoldering to long piece back out of the stove and out of the house.
I use my winch a lot, so great tool to include. I often bring two winches to double my effective witching length. I also bring tow straps to give me even more wincing options.
    Thanks again.

I've had those smoldering logs too, lol. I'm wanting to make a video showing my favorite 2 saw combo. Good advice on bringing extra bars. Even the most experienced of us still get them stuck.

@@MarkThomasBuilder my favorite two saw combo is MS361 & MS461.
The MS361 I great for cutting firewood with a 18 inch bar. It has great power while using the least amount of gas of any chainsaw I have used. It has been my primary saw for over 10 years and well over 80 full cords of wood.
I like the power of the MS461 or MS 661 for my second saw. Mostly with a 25 inch bar but sometimes with a 32-72 inch bar when needed. The fuel efficiency is not as good on these saws and they are heavy. But when you are cutting big wood, you cut a lot faster with the added power.
I always try to use the shortest bar that is practical when cutting. A shorter bar has less friction, so it cuts faster. Also, a shorter bar I lighter, costs less, and has less cutters on the chain to sharpen.

Nice video Mark! Appreciate you taking the time to make it. I live out in the woods (in a tent) in the upper peninsula and entertain myself by building random structures with a chainsaw and chainsaw mill and making videos.
I was just looking for info on pickeroons and your video came up. Gotta get one to save my weary back!
Also, I noticed that you are in Okemos? That’s where I grew up and went to high school!

Oh wow, that's cool! I bought the Pickeroon from Superior Saw in Holt. It my go-to forestry tool.

One thing that I highly recommend and is a total life saver (at least if you run Stihl chainsaws) is the new Stihl 2in1 chain file. It is completely idiot proof and brings the chain back to brand new in 10minutes. The tool has guides to keep you perfectly in line when sharpening and sharpens the cutting tooth and the "raker" at the same time with every stroke. I use mine every 4 tanks of gas or if I notice a slow down in cutting. Definitely helpful when doing serious work in the woods. Only thing between your list and that tool I still need to pick up is one of those tools that you pound into the log and it clamps the bar for easier sharpening in the field.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. There's a slight chance that I might get a Stihl saw to compare to an ECHO. If it works out, I'll look into that 2 in 1 chain file. By the way, Oregon makes a stump bar clamp that works well.

How do you lift large logs into the truck?

    • @MarkThomasBuilder
      @MarkThomasBuilder  3 місяці тому

I split them in half it they're too heavy. The big rounds I roll into my landscape trailer on the mesh ramp.
