Indian students pursue medical education in more than fifteen countries, including Russia, the Philippines, Georgia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Armenia.
However, this situation has changed since 2021.
    How?
The National Medical Commission (NMC) of India has changed the regulations for students going abroad to study medicine. As a result, the options for countries where Indian students can pursue medical education have decreased since 2021.
    Why have they decreased?
Understanding these regulations will help you understand why we can no longer choose certain countries to study medicine.
Here is the first regulation. The course duration of medical studies in the countries or colleges we choose must be at least 54 months, i.e., four and a half years.
As of the release of this video, countries like the Philippines have a shorter course duration. Therefore, students planning to study medicine now should avoid choosing the Philippines. If this situation changes later, a clear notice will be issued by the Philippine government. After that, Indian students can once again go to the Philippines for medical education.
In other countries, the course duration is five or six years. This complies with the regulations of the National Medical Commission.
The second regulation: We must obtain a license to practice as a doctor in the country where we complete our medical studies.
In some countries, obtaining this license requires passing a licensing exam. We must take and pass this exam. In some other countries, there is no licensing exam, and students are granted the right to practice as doctors immediately after completing their medical degree.
In Russia, this licensing exam must be written in the Russian language, which is very difficult for Indian students. Although there is a Russian language class in the first year, it becomes challenging for students who study entirely in English thereafter to write an exam in Russian.
The document provided by the National Medical Commission states that we must obtain a license to practice as an "independent medical practitioner."
In countries like Georgia, there is no licensing exam. Students can work as junior doctors immediately after completing their medical degree.
However, to work as an independent medical practitioner in Georgia, one must complete a postgraduate (PG) degree. So, consider whether studying medicine in Georgia complies with the regulations of the National Medical Commission. The NMC requires a license for an independent medical practitioner, not a junior doctor.
The third important regulation given by the National Medical Commission: From the date we join the medical course, we must complete the entire process of foreign medical education within ten years. If this process is not completed within ten years, the NMC will not grant a license to practice as a doctor in India.
What does the entire process include? A five or six-year medical degree abroad, a twelve-month internship, the licensing exam in that country, the NEXT exam in India, and a one-year internship in India - all of this must be completed within ten years from the date of joining, according to the NMC's regulation.
In countries like Russia, the course duration is six years, plus one year of internship, and passing the licensing exam in Russian, followed by the NEXT or FMGE exam in India, which takes one year, and another year of internship in India. The total time is nine to ten years.
However, the NMC has given a ten-year period. Based on the percentage of students passing the FMGE exam on the first attempt, it is relatively low. If a second attempt is needed, it can take six months to a year.
Therefore, it is better to choose countries with a five-year course duration.
There are additional regulations, but the ones mentioned here are the most important. These should be used to determine which country to choose.
