- Quick programming note: I am super slammed with my day job. So much so that in this video, I plus up the sandwich with an ingredient already in the sandwich because the book said to garnish with it. It was good but come on, bro 🤦♂️ Was planning on re-recording but ya know, slammed. Anyway, hope you still enjoy and go a little bit was on my in comments 🙏 Ok, back to our regularly schedule description. Our first foray into Salads, Sandwiches, and Chafing Dish Recipes of 1916 yielded the odd combo of peanut and sardines in the Virginia Sandwich. Like that sandwich, this one also has a mysterious name seemingly not tied to the sandwich ingredient. But while the combo of ingredients aren’t odd this time, the way it is put together is.

This really needs another piece of bread.
and more mayonnaise
and more butter and cream cheese
and slice of cheese
I would guess that Carmen was most associated with the famous french opera, in the zeitgeist of 1916. Carmen was a saucy Roma woman in 1800's spain, which is famed for it's ham. And much like anyone who eats butter + mayonnaise + cream cheese sandwhiches, Carmen also met an untimely demise
Carmen was a beautiful enchantress. But more importantly, the "protagonist" of the opera ruined his own life through jealousy and indulgence. The message of the play is that while Carmen may be superficial, it is actually our own response to the games people play that truly matters. With enough indiscretions, it is us and our own bitterness that can drive us to become our own worst villian.
Its a pretty sandwich, and way too rich. So it is probably after the opera lol.
Fortunately, not much villainy going on! Always good!
“Assembly is unique” Your the best😂
The "IKEA sandwich"
Without instructions in English.
Don't worry the "sandwich building codes" have been updated several times since 1916.
He sure is, Jeff Bezos
@@cyrollanIt’s a way of life
@@BELCAN57 Funny you say that, cause add a few more layers and even more elaborate toppings and you have yourself the Swedish classic of Smörgåstårta!
Literally means "sandwich cake" and it's pretty much what it sounds like: a cake but everything's swapped out for sandwichy equivalents. Bread instead of sponge, mayo/cream cheese instead of cream, ham/cheese/eggs/shrimp/veggies/etc. instead of the... everything else
I think it's a banger but it's probably an acquired taste to have y'know, cake texture with savoury flavours, and exactly like the reaction in this video, it is (quite literally) _drenched_ in mayo/cream cheese/creme fraiche
Maybe it was named after the Opera....
I really hope your channel keeps growing. You seem like a great person. Wishing all good.
Thank you so much!
@SandwichesofHistory Just found the channel and subscribed!
I know there were two smash hit Carmen films released in 1915, one directed by Cecil B DeMille and one by Raoul Walsh, plus Charlie Chaplin made his Burlesque on Carmen. Movie tie-in recipes were quite popular at the time.
Can you just plus it up by assembling the ingredients as a sensible sandwich? Bread, butter, green onion, ham, tomato(salt and pepper as we are not savages), cream cheese, mayo, bread?
I would argue that butter, cream cheese, and mayo do not make a sensible sandwich! 😄
@@DeborahMaufer Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.
@@phlogistanjones2722 Yes, yes it is
You have such a good natured attitude about sandwiches and other things :)
Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego's sandwich?
Ya beat me to it.
The Carmen Sandwich looks delicious. I think a few sliced green olives would be good with it.
Loving this channel! -- great work you're turning out. O/T: I'd suggest trying a little fresh mint and and Famous Dave's Sweet'n'Spicy pickles on anything you think is salvageable for plussing, and/or Durkee Famous Sauce from NJ. Maybe I haven't found 'em yet in all those videos, but they sure have saved some dullsville sandwiches for me.
Great plus up! Cuts through the fat.
I looked up "Carmen peppers". They're a thin-skinned Italian sweet pepper. Carmen peppers come into season during late summer and hang around through fall. They are a thin-skinned Italian sweet pepper. I'm not sure if that has ANYTHING to do with the name "Carmen sandwich", especially because the recipe doesn't mention peppers at all.
I'm afraid to suggest a beer for this one!
This is a truly fascinating amount of pale slathered things
I'm plussing it up with...lemon zest! ... nope! green onion, that's good too!
Welcome to Salads of History!
I can’t imagine this being anyone’s favorite sandwich.
Really really odd stuff
This is a strange one, but have to admit it sounds tasty.
Feels like a second slice of ham on top, and then closing the sandwich would work too
That's it,take all the fun and adventure out of a sandwich!🤣
I enjoyed the process here, wow a bit moist this one, eh? You picked the perfect plus up too. I'd eat this but of course I'd adjust the amounts of dairy and maybe add a sharp cheddar as well as maybe a fried egg on top? Hungry now lol
If you're going to build a salad on top of the sandwich, maybe a fruit salad..? Is 1916 too early for a Carmen Miranda Sandwich..? {I think so}
Not Carmen Miranda,not enough fruit.
She was born in 1909, but it was my immediate thought also😊.
Carmen San Diego.🎶 Where in the world…did the other price of bread go?🎶
"No common sense in sandwich building" 😁
this is a very creamy sandwich. quite interesting
This reads and gets built like a Grilled Charlie
Weird that it's not cut into strips, or at least quarters, to make a tea sandwich or "post night out" sandwich. Not BAD, but WOW is that a lot.
Honest. I watch your channel because you are honest.
From the thumbnail I thought this was a gelatin
Looks good to me
Needs Jalapenos...and a top piece of bread!!!
I wish instead of a thumbs up or down, there were a question mark I could click.
I keep kosher so I don't eat ham. But. Mustard and pickle would have been my plus ups. 🙂👍
It’s called Carmen because where in the world would someone eat this
Thank you
The walnuts are a bit out of left field. And the spread combo looks a bit... unctuous...
The green onions looked like they would help
I know it says bread, but I might have to try this on lavash. Cracker bread still counts as bread, right?
hmmm Some assembly required? It doesn't look done.
Ah 1916,the year of sandwich experimentation and hallucinogenic drugs. "No I tell you the fillings go OUTSIDE dammit!"
Too Bizet to try out this recipe.
When I saw the photo I thought the chopped bits were olives. As much as I like walnuts, might be a better idea.
Maybe wouldve been more balanced with a thick cut of country ham
What in the world is a
[bass voice]
Carmen Sand-a-wich-a?
For some reason I was expecting two pieces of ham or roast beef
Carmen needs to get it together.
Wait, you're saying you don't ONLY spend your days building sandwiches and making videos for us? I'm scandalized!
Craving a Really Massive Ensemble Nosh?
It’s like an open face sandwich but J/K ha ha not really! with that bottom part. I kind of want to see if I can find this history to this sandwich or at least figure out why it is the way it is.
Is the top meant to be a hat for a woman, maybe? As someone else noted, Carmen Miranda would've been like 7 years old when this book was published....so that ain't the Carmen this sandwich is looking for. The mystery continues I suppose. That is a bit of an odd recipe though.
Named for her friend, Carmen who did ***NOT*** know how to make a sandwich....
Just a thought....
Where in the world is Carmen Sand-wich-iego? Sorry that joke makes about as much sense as this sandwich.
Maybe Carmen owned a dairy?
Clearly it's named after Carmen Sandiego.
Wow, okay World War 1.
