I was toasting a supermarket calzone and thinking about the universality of sandwiches
For what I can gather, the earliest known written reference in the Western tradition to a sandwich-like concoction (though not with the name) goes all the way back to Hillel the Elder, a Jewish Sage and Rabbi who founded the tradition in the Passover Seder of what is now referred to as 'Hillel's Sandwich' (or by it's proper term 'Korech'), i.e. taking two pieces of soft matzo bread, and placing between them a slice of the Pascal Lamb and some of the bitter herbs used during the Seder ritual, and then eating them all at once in fulfillment of a verse from Torah.
That's dope if true... at least it's motivated me to do some Jewish sandwhich research!
Sounds like a gyro though.
Its*
@@WillBlindYouWithLight a gyro is done with pita bread, not matzo, which is a much more delicate unleavened bread.
*from what you can gather?
This is crazy. I never knew it was a place, never knew it was a person. A simple sandwich turned into all of this. 🤯
I am very glad the Sandwich exists.

A sandwich is a way to consume a main dish
While being clean and not messy
While also being able to play poker in the hand not holding the sandwich
From there many non-sandwich food items can be identified
History tastes authentic
So sandwiches has been around for millennia before Earl of Sandwich popularize it?
Modern Sandwich is rather different from ancient sandwich

So before Montague, for thousands of years it never occurred to anyone that you could hold a piece of meat between two pieces of bread?
Watch the video again. She said that the concept had been around forever but Montague named and popularized it in the UK/europe
Yo what the FUDGEBROWNIE is a shrimp cocktail sandwhich? I need it.
At its core, it's a shrimp cocktail prepared with mayonnaise and other goodies between two pieces of bread. I am sure some do theirs with chopped shrimp done up like tuna salad.
I'm gonna become the 5th Earl of Sandwich
A slighty large piece of meat between two pieces of "galleta"... not really a sandwich but close enough... around 1720 or something... or that is the tale...
