In the light novel he express his thoughts to the reader, contrary to the anime. Though you should be aware that he is an *_unreliable narrator_* as he appears to have redundant thoughts during moments he should pay attention.
In the light novel, ayanokoji recalls when he felt fear when a kid collapsed, fear that he will reach a future he will only feel cold and nothing else. Though during a fight against ryueen he implies that he felt cold instead of fear of losing.
He also used to express more emotions like a normal student when he enrolled in the school, but that's because he wants to be a normal student, like stuttering when kushida approached him and other common characteristics. That mask disappears the more you read-Ironically that made the readers confused, assuming it was just an oversight from the author, that he may have enjoyed the anime's own personality of him and ended up adapting it to the ln.
For me that's a great way of explaining the mc behavior but darn, i am someone who rather spectate both teams, i know the chance ayanokoji will defeat his father is high, but i wish there was a interesting past about his father too, 'cause at first i thought he had some sort of influence, allowed to create that place like it is.

He's not really emotionless. He just doesn't show it on his face. The anime showed very little of his thoughts. Read the light novel if you want to learn about his thought process.

@@akibalnur8070 I think u are not understanding it. In the first volumes he has the thoughts of a cliche anime character cuz that what he thinks is normal at the time and he is trying to be normal, so step one to being normal: think like a normal person.
I definitely thought that Ayanokoji was not so well written until i read the light novel (currently on volume 8, no spoilers pls). And the depth of Ayanokoji personality is so incredibly well designed. That it almost seams like hes way of thinking was though out even before the first volumes. Also the hidden plots:

I love how the author can absolutely integrate the fine details of Ayanokoji's personality in his dialogue.
Ayanokoji's personally is not stated in the book itself like he is this and this. It's something more natural. Its explain on Ayanokoji's actions. And until this day we dont have an specific box to incorporate Ayanokoji.
In the first volume Ayanokoji has a very extroverted and light form of dialogue. Which was kept for Vol 1 and 2. This was Ayanokoji's interpretation of a "normal highschooler". Ayanokoji faking his personality to others but the readers are left to comprehend that ayanokoji can "fake" or "exagerate" his own thoughts. (Vol1)
He later understood that he can act more like himself and little by little not only his dialogue but also this thought process changed overall. That was the fault of Chabashira sensei (Class D teacher) for blackmail Ayanokoji with expulsion. And Ayanokoji in response became more analytical, cold, thoughtful. Know instead of a highschooler his thought process assimilated more of a scientists making multiple tests. Trying to get the best results by applying the least risk as possible for survival purposes. And also trying to maintain himself outside the spotlight. is the personality that we called White Room persona. It's a theory from the Fandom because its not actually stated by Ayanokoji himself. Because of trauma and circumstance Ayanokoji had to use as a defense mechanism to survive in the whiteroom. This is what people that only watch the first season of the anime asume he is an Edgy character because of the "win at every cost" and "you're just a tool mentality" (Vol 3 throughout Vol7)
Now which is Ayanokoji real personality? What we know is that non of the other 2 mentioned. It's well said by Ayanokoji himself that. Those are not there real personalities (Vol 4.5). But are like a part of him. He describes himself like sort of a liquid. Just born into a individual.
What we know about his real personality is that Ayanokoji is a very curious person. Maybe because of the WR. He wants to see if normal people can grow. He wants to experiment with relationship. He thought process like explain after is sortha like a scientist. He likes to make hypothesis on people and like finding potential in people, he observes and helps them become better exactly because he is curious of what they can achieve. You could say he likes helping others even though he doesn't acknowledge it on his own. He don't know what "normal" is supposed to feel. Thats why he makes an effort to be a normal student. Explain in various situaltions:
Volume 1: he placed 50 in every exam. He failed in some questions 80% of students passed easily but could answer correctly questions that only 1% of students could pass. Which he explained was a miscalculation do to him not been able to rank the questions difficulty himself until confronted over it.
Volume 5: asked Sudo whats the average grip strength and miscalculated when Sudo obviously having no clue about it said a ridiculous number and Ayanokoji adjusted his expectation letting him to be top 2 in athletics by accident.
He doesn't forgive people easily when trying to harm him. He doesn't like to talk about his past life.
My conclusion is that Ayanokoji is a very well thought-out character with brilliant writting he is not easy to comprehend because classroom of the elite doesn't give the reader the answer for everything to digest immediately. It almost seams like a treasure hunt where you gather details and information to craft Ayanokoji personality little by little, and that pretty rare to sea. I read a lot of manga and light novels and i personality think Ayanokoji personality is one of the most well-written ones in psychological fiction.

am I the only one who noticed that this speech for this character is not completely iconic in the manga at all? I haven't read the manga yet, but I've already found where the anime ends and the manga continues and that such an iconic speech is not there at all. Overall, the manga is quite different and the anime is maybe even better, but I don't know

Ayanokougi lowkey reminds me of the characters L and Light from Death Note. In the beginning, he was like big brain-ing (L) then at the end he was finding out how to use people, as tools, in order for his victory in the end (Light).
u see the difference here is light used to be decent guy with a heart before he got the death note but here it seems the Ayanakuji grew up this way so he has no humanity what so ever

I don't know if I'm the only one but the end didn't come as a surprise to me it was quite clear from the beginning (or I'm just weird and I'm looking for a villain in everyone) but it was one of the best anime I've ever seen.
There is only one question where evil is here, it seems that at first he was kind, this is shown by his actions and indifference to everything, only kind people are able to ignore garbage and communicate with him!
