We are truly now coming into the final years of the “legends.” Bruce certainly fits the bill. What a career and what an actor. The fact that he is referred to as “ nominated” and not “winner” is a crime!
Well said and well put !!
He should have won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2014 for “ Nebraska “ by a landslide . And when he was cast as a bad guy he was incredible. He stole the show in “The Cowboys “ . Yes they should honor him with a special Academy Award!
@zorrpop Most definitely! I thought he was going to get it for Nebraska. I can't remember who won it, but Dern was terrific in that film. Also, he was as good as Jon Voight and Jane Fonda in Coming Home, yet he went home empty-handed. The fact that Dern, Annette Benning, and Michelle Pfeiffer don't have Oscar's is mind-boggling.
Great interview.
And his daughter is a great talent as well. If I see her in a cast..I watch it.
I had the pleasure of running a 10 mi. run alongside Mr. Dern back in the day. A very pleasant man. It was my first 10 mile run, normally I ran just 4 or 5 miles a day. With a mile to go he pulled away from me. A memorable day at Sycamore Canyon. I think Silent Running had just come out and he was very modest about his part. Would that all 'stars' were as nice as Mr. Dern. Heck, would that all people were as nice.
Fantastic Actor. Still on the ball at 81, awesome.
Love Bruce Dern one of the most talented actors of all time! Could listen to him for hours!
His appearance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was like the movie equivalent of a guitar solo at a rock concert.
I love Bruce, he is an iconic actor & was super in the role. But I was so looking forward to seeing Burt Reynolds play the part. He would've been fantastic & equally iconic!
The movie also had so much personal significance for Burt. He had filmed westerns at that very ranch, back in the day. The lead roles of Pitt & DeCaprio were loosley based on Burt & his relationship w/his stuntman, Hal Needham. And Tarrantino is actually named after Burt's character in Gunsmoke. Per Tarrantino, his mom had a huge crush on Burt at the time of his birth.
Burt had done all the table readings for the film & was actually rehearsing his lines for the role when he had his heart attack. He was due up to film the following month...It's So Sad...But Bruce was a good friend of Burts. They had also worked together in the past. I'm sure he's very pleased Quentin chose Bruce as his replacement. RIP BR
@@coldwinter5710 I too would have loved to have seen Burt play the role. But so happy that Quentin replaced him with one of my all time fave actors ! Bruce was wonderful.....as always ! Thanks for your perceptive & insightful comment !
@@jubalcalif9100 Burt & Bruce go way back. Burt also worked with Bruce's 1st wife, Dianne Ladd, in White Lightening in 1973.
@@coldwinter5710 Wow ! I saw "White Lightening" at a local drive in with friends when it first came out but didn't know who Dianne Ladd was at the time so didn't notice her. Fascinating ! Thanks so much ! :-)
Nice analogy. 👍
Gosh, I love Bruce Dern. First saw him on Big Valley. His performance on The Burbs was hysterical. He was a scene stealer whether accidental or intentional, he ran away with it.
The first real thing I saw him in was Silent Running. A beautiful sci-fi classic. Maybe the only character Bruce played that wasn't sketchy, lol!
And he signed the film poster for me. I'm always a fan.
Bruce could always play a great psycho in his younger days. His stories of Karen Black and Marilyn Monroe really bring home the fact that some actors unfortunately have a great desire for approval even in adulthood. Being happy with yourself is the greatest gift you can give yourself.
My favorite Bruce Dern performance is King of Marvin Gardens
There's only one Bruce Dern, one of the most original actors ever. Still really under-rated today but Hitchcock, for instance, loved Dern because he said every time he did a take with Bruce, he was surprised by what he did every time.
well he did get nominated for Nebraska and sadly lost but i hope he one day wins one and does a film with his daughter and Ex wife too i mean all 3 of them
@@rolandofgilead43 A neurotic version of On Golden Pond.
Amen to that !!
hmm....doesn't sound like Hitchcock to me. The last thing he wanted was to be surprised by actors.
A true talent...I was surprised to hear he hasn't won an Oscar!! Again great talent!!
Man, Bruce can tell a story.
"Lost Drive-In" hosted by Bruce Dern on SpeedVision was the height of cable television.
Loved his performance in Hateful Eight.
What a national treasure! And you gotta love someone who tells great stories! Silent Running is one of favorites. And John Wayne was always best in movies where he's killed, so, thank you, Bruce!
What a man, fantastic actor....class act !!
'coming home,' and 'black sunday' were clssic dern performances....brilliant tortured souls...
I loved Bruce in Silent Running. But he’s been in so many great films.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
His movie career aside, the fact that he runs and refers to himself as " a runner " makes me respect him so much more ! He is fascinating to watch and to listen to . One of my favorite scenes is in " Support your local sheriff " where he's in the cell holding the tools whilst the bricklayer builds the jail around him ! He's funny, engaging and knowledgeable , and it is inexcusable that he has not been presented with an Oscar for his continued contribution to the motion picture industry ! Bruce Dern is a true acting legend. Long may he run !
If you haven't heard it, try to find his interview with Marc Maron (the WTF podcast). He goes into a lot of detail about the running, and more.
Loved your comment ! And I totally agree !
Love that film and that scene. The interplay between Dern and Walter Brennan cracks me up every time! "You mean you help put the bars in?" 🤣
I met him waaaaay back in the 70's when I was a kid when they were filming some scenes for Family Plot close to my neighborhood.
He was pretty alright, yea, signed autographs and chatted with us kids during a break.
misunderstood actor,,,genius intellect
My FAVORITE actor!!!!! Just watch ANYTHING he stars in.
Man....Bruce Dern will be 87 on June 4, 1936! Good for him! This is a 2017 interview I’m guessing. He’sStill going strong in the movies! He’s got a few TBA this year! WONDERFUL!
They Shoot Horses Don't They & Coming Home both left me in tears.
piesusan17 Coming Home is a powerful film.
Oh man, I forgot about that one. Great film. What a cast. High-level performances from Dern, Jane Fonda, Bonnie Bedilla, Susanah York, Gig Young, and Red Buttons. Michael Sarrazin was adequate, but hasn't he always been.
Bruce Dern to me is a living legend!
Maybe the fastest 25 minutes I've ever spent on UA-cam. I'll never forget Bruce Dern's astonishingly incredible and compelling performance in "The King of Marvin Gardens". One of my favorite movie characters of all time.
Good one with Jack Nicholson. Dern was also fantastic in another 'undervalued' gem from the 70s, called Smile. It's an amazing edgy satire on America's fixation on beauty pageants. Barbara Feldon from Get Smart delivered an impressive performance, along with Dern.
@@waynej2608 - I had a pal who was in Smile
@maddymud Cool. Do you recall what part? Was he one of Bruce Dern's son's friends- those boys spying on the pageant gals? Must've been a trip.
@@waynej2608 - she was a pageant contestant I think. She did perky really well. Kate Sarchet. Man, I just looked at cast - I forgot Melanie Griffiths was in it, as well as Dennis Dugan
Psych-Out, The Trip,Silent Running and god knows how many great TV performances. A true legend who should have walked off with the Oscar for Nebraska.
I loved Silent Running. I think it's the first film that made me cry. And that's when I thought it was fiction.
Larry King is a great interviewer. He's very honest and he stays out of the way and with all his experiences and interests, he can hang with the best. I enjoy his show!
It's good to see you Larry and Bruce. You've both got a lot to talk about.
Great interview, Bruce Dern is an Icon.
I've always loved this actor in film.
I LOVE how he respects the camera and tried NOT to curse,, that shows respect that so many actors don't have today. Larry gave him permission to speak his own and he did. And you know what,,THATS Bruce Dern! What an outstanding interview. You can see from this interview just what an outstanding actor Bruce Dern IS! Watch his face,, watch his hands, watch his body movement!! OMG,, This is THE best!! Larry is gone now and Bruce is still LIVING just like he said he would do,, looking over that ridge to see what's next and,, KEEP RUNNING! LOL Awesome interview,,,:)
Wonderful actor. Could play “unbelievably horrible ” so well. So great in this interview. Great stories.
Great interview, Larry.
As always this is brilliant 👍
His 2007 book "Things I've said but probably shouldn't have, an unrepentant memoir " is a jewel too.
EXCELLENT Interview 😎👍🏻
Thank you Mr. Dern for giving props to Douglas Trumbull. People are so awed by his SFX work they forget he's also an excellent director. Now ir some studio would just give him a project and a blank check.
I knew you would get stronger. Happy New Year, Larry!!
Larry King still rocks the Casbah! What an interview. Love you, Larry and Bruce!!!
I wish this was a three hour episode, 25 minutes is way too short for these two!
Bruce Dern infamous for shooting John Wayne in the back. He could play heals with the best of them.
He saw Dern in the studio cafeteria and said I heard we’re gonna be working together ( the Cowboys)
And I see your character kills me. Dern said yes Mr. Wayne, I believe your right.
Wayne tells him with s grin
“ boy is the audiences gonna hate you. 😂😆🤣
@@timsydlowski5208 Lol. Now, that cracks me up!
2 legends..
Exellent.Great Bruce great Larry.
He was brilliant in Nebraska , especially when he is getting out of the car . Each time he gets out he kicks the door open . I have always use my foot to push the door open 😀😀😀
Always a great actor. I loved him in Family Plot. And good for him that he still runs.
silent running ..my altime favorite movie
I feel like too many people forget about Dern's role in The Driver
The one with Ryan O'Neal, too? Yeah, that was good, but I haven't seen it in a very long time. I must catch it again. Ty for the memory flog. 👍
It always makes me feel sad to hear people say they don't believe in eternal life.
God meant for us to live forever and there is eternal life.
Nup
Bruce could make making a peanut butter sandwich intensely interesting.

Decades ago, I saw him playing a drug pusher with dark glasses. I cannot remember the name of the film but he was great.
We miss Larry and Long Live Bruce!
What a lucky guy... raised around a lot of influence people..
I remember Bruce playing a bounty hunter on 'The Big Valley.'
"I waant that dog, Barkley,"
Never ever forgot him from “The Cowboys” most hateful character on film. Such a great actor…
Omgawd Im so glad he's alive! I thought he died. He looks and sounds great
Class act, one of the best.
WHATS IN THE BASEMENT HAIR KLOPEK
*herr
"....respect for what came before....". Yes, and Dern himself certain represents that attitude.
Always intriguing on film.
Man this guy as a bad guy in westerns or any other movie...was awesome!
I love his character in Family Plot.
I have so much respect now for Mr. Dern's acting ability. I hated HIM in my youth. It wasn't until Silent Running before I realized what a great actor he is. Now I realize it was his acting as the characters he played that I hated so much. But maybe that voice was a little part of it too. I also love Laura Dern from the first time i saw her in Mask.
Bruce Seen great actor Hateful Eight great Western he makes a good basis in roles an d was great with Tom Hanks in the Burbs
When I was growing up there was a dude that always went home to watch,as he called him, ' psycho ' Bruce Dern on some TV show.
Bruce was a long distance runner since H.S.🤣
Marvelous!!!!
Mr BRUCE DERN a LEGENDE
Great character actor!
I had totally forgotten that he was in Family Plot. I think Nebraska was his most amazing performance.
14:30 you are right to fear death Larry. Jean-Jacque Rousseau: "Everything inside me tells me there is something after this life." Very interesting interview.
bloody great.
Great favorite actor I remember him in the biker movie with him as "Loser" the dead guy.???long time ago.
Mr. Dern, I remember working on a true story in Clovis New Mexico called "Beleive in me" I was the background guy you knocked aross the floor in the gymnasium scene. After you were kind enough to pose with me for a quck pick and looked me in the eye and said "You got to eat the apple to get to the core.. don'tcha..
Wow what a legend.
Wonderful interview. Larry King was always able to get the free expressionists to open up!
Great guys.
Dern as Michael Lander in Black Sunday is just so damn disturbing. I will never not be in awe of that performance.
Great Actor.
He was great in Support Your Local Sheriff. Proved he could do comedy too
Check his filmography. He's still working flat out on tons of films and tv to this day.
I saw him in a Clint Eastwood western movie, it's intriguing that Clint's name did not get mentioned in this interview.
"Hang "em High"
Man, I'd love to hang out and chat with Dern over a coffee.
I love his story about Maralyn Monroe the part about her loving walking in the rain. A Country girl at heart .It's in her eye's in every picture that she actually got to be her self in it
They should have let that side of her shine more often. You can take a person out of Nature but you can't take the love of Nature out of a Woman like her.
larry is Rt...all new pill bottles with cotton.. should come with a Tail that is glued to the lid.. U open lid for first time and the Tail is tied to the cotton, enough, for the pull the lid and the cotton starts to come up.. Thanks for the upload..
Glad you're still with us, Larry. May we hear from you another year from now. In Christ's Good Name.
I used to hang out at a nightclub in the eighties called, "The Hop" in Fountain Valley, California. One Friday night a guy walked up to me and asked: "Are you, Bruce Dern?" I said: "No," and as he was walking away from me he said: "I think you are." I'm sorry to hear Bruce Dern is an atheist.
'I'm sorry to hear Bruce Dern is an atheist.'??
Huh? Is that a bad thing? Why?
your censor beep is too loud!!
He's a great guy and a great actor. The interview shows the great guy and the Film's he was in show the Actor. Two examples. It's a love hate relationship and so are his Caracter. The Cowboys. Love his performance but anyone that plays the bad guy well you hate him because it's natural for hood people to hate a villain. The Burbs I love him. I'm going to 55 soon .I work for a water utility and I'm a middle class blue calor guy.I meet all kinds from homeless to very wealthy. He's playing one of the regular guy's. I have Freinds of all walks including power line men .when he climbs the power/phone pole I'm on the edge of my seat thinking don't do it .😁 my buddy delivered pizza to guys like that. Time to rewatch them both.
Why on Earth would they make Ted Kennedy HEROIC Larry? WTF. He let that girl die.
Trying to rewrite history
I agree with you.
Great bad guy in many, many westerns!
Larry thought Bruce was talking about Dalton Trumbo. Notice how he said “banned”
The kid next door is a meatball 😂 the burbs and the this great actor and man
Back in the early 90's (a la VHS) I used to rewind the part where he fell off the roof *over and over again* . That movie is a classic and Feldman really was a meatball.
@@ontologicallysteve7765 lol Feldman yeah love that fall vhs same here over and over again 😂
@Tra Ho and mine 😂
I'm very surprised Hal Ashby wasn't on Bruce Dern's list of genius directors.
Yes! Ashby was a very good director in his days. He definitely had his run ins with the studios and, well, everybody else. Hal was featured quite heavily in Biskind's book "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls".
@@erichaynes7502 Ashby was a brilliant editor & a brilliant director. Have you seen The Landlord lately? The studios ruined his cuts of Lookin' To Get Out & Second-Hand Hearts, which are now restored to Ashby's original versions on DVD & are terrific & hilarious. Biskind's book is rather a salacious negative gossip tome on great directors, all of whom Biskind apparently wants to cut down to size with pejorative personality stories. Discussing Robert Altman, Biskind doesn't even mention Robert Altman's magnificent The Long Goodbye, for example. Nick Dawson's biography of Hal Ashby is the best source of information on him.
Hal Ashby directed The Last Detail and many others. His work is superb.
@@waynej2608 Oh yeah: Harold & Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Coming Home, Being There... He's among the master directors.
@@ericmalone3213 I've always wondered about why Looking to Get Out seemed so strange. Have you read "Being Hal Ashby" or seen the documentary they made on him a few years back?
Bruce Dern used to weird me out, and I wasn't happy when he shot the Duke, but he's okay now. I'm over it. 😂👍
Bruce has never drank smoked or drugged. He's likely to live until he's 100+.
I have yet to see it referenced anywhere that Chappaquiddick occurred while Apollo 11 was on it's way to the moon to complete the goal set by Ted's brother. What was going through Ted's mind at that time? Did it have anything to do with why he got so drunk? I never saw the Chappaquiddick movie so if that explains it, my bad, but it had to have played a role.
I think Ted was drunk a lot, he really liked the parties and young women. Kopechne had had 4 or 5 drinks the hour before she died so it looks like they both were smashed. All the Kennedy's would have been better off if they would have been more discrete.
Ive always thought Bruce Dern talks like Neill Young sounds when he claims he's singing.
I would have voted for Barbara Jordan, too.
every one so old now
Marilyn Monroe could've asked me to walk her from New York to Los Angeles and I would've been ok with it.....
I'm ready when you are,
LETS GO!
