Hello! Can you also add where you bought the seed when listing varieties. Thank you! ❤
A tip for increasing your Sweet peas Danny, I saw this on Instagram last year and wasn't sure if it would work but it did. When you pinch out the seedlings to make them bush up, keep the trimmings and put them in water and eventually they root, pot them on and grow on like normal. I ended up with double the quantity from original sowing. My view was if it didn't work I'd lost nothing anyway because the trimmings normally are put in the compost bin. It might have been just lucky but I'm definitely trying it again this year.
Oh wow! I just pinched mine out. Wish I’d waited until after ready this! 😂😮😢
@TheFarmyardGarden Claire, it took a while for mine to root, I gave up looking in the end but when I said I think I'll bin them I found they were a mass of roots(watched pot never boils 😂) so if you try you have to be patient.
@ I’ll definitely remember this. Excellent tip! Did you use any rooting compound too?
@TheFarmyardGarden No just tap water, it's like getting any cutting to root in water.
That's a great tip Liz! I do this too! I usually put the cutting plants at home. Always feel ive gained extra for my buck 😊🌱
Thank you for your tips. It’s so helpful for some of us who hobby gardeners or trying to planting vegetables in our own little garden or container garden.😊
So nice of you! Thank you for watching and enjoying them! Danny 🌱
Hi Danny
Another great video what fun that must have been for class 6 the children must have been so excited to plant these egg cups. It also gives them an early start to growing for some, thank you for your time Danny in recording this video Oh also a great live on Thursday.Kindest regards Val
It was fun for me too! So glad you enjoyed and the live val 😊🌱
I sowed Karmen (red) onions in January and have already pricked them out. Fantastic germination. The storage box in 12 sections is a great tip!
Oh, welldone! Karmen did well for me 2 years ago..goodluck! 😊🌱
Fab what to sow in February video Danny. 👍
Love your sparkly numbers and lists.
Have a great week, Linda ❤ x
Why thank you Linda 😊🌱
Well done on teaching the kids Danny. Such an important topic to learn about 😊
Thank you Shirley. 😁🌱
Do this!
My mum's Greek/Cypriot Broad bean stew
(koukia lathera)
Ingredients:
200g de-podded broad beans
Extra virgin olive oil for frying
half onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 bay leaf
3 tablespoons tomato paste
150ml hot water mixed in a jug with vegetable stock (half a cube will do)
2 teaspoons dried oregano
Pinch of Pimento powder (we call it bachari - not necessary but adds a nice earthy sweet tone to the dish)
feta cheese crumbled to serve
Black pepper to season
Pinch of salt (sea salt is the very best - no need for fancy stuff it all comes from the ocean)
Method:
Saute onions on a medium heat until soft and translucent
Add garlic and fry for about a minute (or until fragrance is strong) - don't burn it!
Add broad beans, spices, tomato paste and water and oregano (cook for about 15 mins) Lid on!
Serve in a bowl with some crumbled feta and a dash of additional olive oil - we like a dash of balsamic vinegar too :)
A bit of rustic/homemade bread or baguette bread slices grilled in the oven with olive oil, oregano and salt on top is really nice for dipping too.
With love from Llansamlet. Keep up the amazing content. We have a small garden and we're just getting into growing food. Your videos are a treasure trove of knowledge :)
Thank you!
Thank you so much! Means a lot. I shall try the recipe :) so glad you enjoy the videos. Danny 🌱
Red baron onions 100% germination and did really well for me last year from seed.
They have always proven we well too!
Yes same here !
I grow Red Herald they are quite a large onion and store really well 👍
Thank you Lorraine! Let's hope we all get bumper crops this year 🙌
So many good choices here Danny. That will keep us busy this month 😂
Thank you! Haha oh for sure! The madness is about to start lol
Thank you for such wonderful information to make seed starting easier. Experience in starting seeds and growing plants is invaluable and you’re graciously sharing so much!
Youre very welcome! Thank you 😊🌱
I did red Holland blood a few wks ago and they did really well....I often germ mine in a dark cupboard (most onions and leeks) almost all of mine did pretty well
Oh they are lovely spring onions! Oh wow that's an interesting way to germinate! Danny 🌱
It was so nice to see the childrens egg cups.
They loved it too! Thanks cheryl ❤️🌱
Hi Danny, i have the Eagle sweetpeas too, I bought them last year, Steve, from greenside up, recommended them RIP ❤ plenty of helpful info on sowing seeds. I'm growing Jermor from sets, and I grew them last year, and they are delicious 😋 I have the suitcase too, I labelled mine with months too, so it works well for me 😊 thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Oh I wasn't aware he used those seeds. Oh I grew jermor last year and they are beautiful!
Danny. Another onion I've grown for first time this year, that germinated well is Elista. Dan Allotment Diaries grows them . He swears by them
Tjank you Jean! 😊😊😊
Just starting to watch, and I better get cracking on the sowing. It's great to get going on seeds.
We love it don't we haha
Great video Danny, can’t comment on varieties as growing from seed for the 1st time…Prospero F1, Long Red Florence & Zebrune went in 5days ago. Broad Beans, nip tops out to prevent black fly, harvest when tiny so they don’t go chalky otherwise you’ll detest them. Cooked in butter & a bit of white wine mmmm I’d love to have a plan for brassicas as I never know which variety to sow for the harvest, I end up with 8 cabbages at the same time & the wrong month.
Thank you Vanessa! Great varieties you've chosen! You'll love the zebrune and long reds Florence! Thanks for the broadbean advice. Fingers crossed haha
We have snow 🤦♀️ so sorting seed and potting up peppers 🫑 chili 🌶️ and eggplant 🍆 is my chore of the day. Great list and love the small box I’ll have to look into something similar. Have a fab week, Ali ❄️❄️🇨🇦
Lucky!! You know I'm never going to sympathise with your snow Jackie! Haha
You have got so much sown and planned for sowing in February. A few of the same crops. I’m really looking forward to the red flowered broad beans. Someone last year harvested them very small, in tiny pods and ate them as a whole pod. I might try that this year.
I have a few of my Boxing Day onions doing ok. Need to pot more on. I am trying not to panic over the poor germination yet. Will sow again this week, thanks for the reminder.
That floating shelf is looking pretty full already! It’s so exciting seeing things growing for a new season. Spring is coming ❤
Lovely video 😊
Thanks Clare! Yes .. as always haha! I'm sowing again this week too. Plenty of time I'm sure. Happy growing. Danny 🌱😊
@ it’s only just begun 🌱
@TheFarmyardGarden I know 🤦♂️😂😂😂
Great video Danny. I love growing onions and my favourite 2 are Fasto onion, and Walla Walla onion both lovely and always get a great crop. Store well and great taste especially Walla Walla nice and sweet and great in salads and sandwiches.
Oh wow! I cam honestly say I've never heard of either! Off to research:) thanks John!
Great advice 5 flags and plant out!! Some of my onion sets need to go out!!! My Zebrune from seeds are just coming up now, can’t wait to try them.
Need more space 😂😂 already !! I need a poly 😂😂
Trying to hang off till the 14th Feb for brassicas but I may ditch sprouts 🌱 I like them but 2 years and not much off them. So 19p tesco I think it will be 😂
Ooh valentine brassicas haha! Zebrune are beautiful 🌱😊
So helpful, thanks Danny!
No problem! Thanks Roisin 😊🌱
Your February sowing guides in the UK are my 'what to sow/start/chit in March/April'. I should be well prepared, then. ;)
Thanks for a great video, take care!
Trude
Oh that's good! Gives you time to prepare haha!
I have found broad beans best just sauteed in a bit of olive oil or butter. They are a bit fiddly if you like peeling the inner bean, which I do. The tops can be nipped off and used as greens and doing that will prevent aphid infestation later in the season. It is also pretty easy to start celery from store bought clumps. Just cut the root off about 2.5-4 cm from the end, peel off the outside ribs and place in a container of water until roots sprout, then pot up. Plant out when established in a place with morning sun and afternoon shade with lots of water. I like kohlrabi just julienned and raw on a veg tray. Great video Danny. Keep up the good work. AND congratulations for inspiring the next generation to get growing!!!
I love how you eat Sylvie! You're very cultured haha! Great tips too!
@@TheGrowUpChannel bahahahaha!
Great update Danny loved it , have you tried Globo onions like your good friend Malcolm Kingswell or Bedfordshire Champion 👍
Oh I have!! Great croppers. Thanks Jim! Danny 🌱😁
Broad beans 🫘 are delish especially with mash potatoes 🥔 have great scented flowers for the bees 🐝 too x
Mashed into the potatoes?
@TheGrowUpChannel eat them separately not mashed 🙂🙂
Hi Danny. I have exactly the same seed storage/ filing system as you. I have two photo cases. one for veg and herbs and one for flowers. I grow so many varieties of flowers for cutting and probably have over a 1000 seedlings by the end of March. If I had the space, I would grow more - I could definitely do with a polytunnel. Who knows, maybe I will move one day, and fulfil my dream! I have done all my onion/ brassica/salad crops in January but am going to do repeat sowings in February of many of them as \i like to keep a continuous supply. Thanks for a great video. Happy growing 🙂
Haha great aren't they! Oh wow that's very efficient. I like your thinking! Danny 🌱😊
As for onions last year we tried Toughball we planted the seed & grew them on,they have been outside all winter & yes we have lost a few however they are about 8/10 inches tall,we have covered a few rows & left a few rows open just to see the difference in growth,as soon as the weather picks up they are away so we get an early harvest, they really do work as we did them in2023,we still plant other varieties probably in another few weeks so we have plenty to go at,good luck to everyone & happy growing.
Oh wow! That's good! Good on you Jackie!!! Thank you 😊🌱
I'm going to do celery and then have a go at some tomatoes.
I usually have celery off you. I'm going to try myself first haha.. if not I'm back to you Cheryl 🌱😂😂😂
@TheGrowUpChannel always welcome. Fingers crossed that we are both successful.
Great update mate
Thanks Tony! 😊
Great selection of choices. I need to start all my February seeds off, need to make space first. 😂😂
😂😂😂😁 finally that's something I have alot of. Phew! Goodluck mark!
Sowed Ailsa Craig onions March 2024, planted out & they are STILL not ready but have survived the Winter. Maybe the lack of sunlight in England last year ?? Hopefully they'll be ready this year
I'd be concerned they may go to flower in the second year. So watch out for that. Goodluck! 😀
Nice seeds !! 🐝Thanks for the great video🌻
Thank you ! Let the madness begin haha
@@TheGrowUpChannel YHEAAA
Great video Danny. Was going to comment on the live but i sowed last years boxing day potty mouth challenge seeds. Last year was very terrible for germination but this year they are so far coming up strong, fingers crossed and have given them a trim already. From grown local - red baron, rijinburger and rosa/red florence. The main difference this year was that i went back to baking the sieved compost, instead of using boiling water. Had terrible fungus gnats last year so ended up using nematodes.
Just resown chilli's but will just buy starts if these don't germinate.
Also, doing a test/ comparison to the sugar snap peas i got from premier seeds as again v bad germination last year. Comparing it to seeds i bought from B&Q i got for 10p.
Really cool what you did with the kids at the school. Do they have a nature club there? I think veg plotter and Charles Dowding have discounts for schools/ kids. Our kids school did a fundraiser and got some raised beds for the kids to sow and plant stuff like strawberries, etc and in KS1 they got to grow easy things to bring home like sunflowers and runner beans. Been saving those seeds since.
This weekend will be my big sowing weekend! Eek! Excited but trying to get a lot done before the proper growing season starts.
Hope you have a lovely week and take care!
Thank you. Ive seen a greenhouse on site. I shall enquire :) my weekend will also be a huge sowing session. Happy growing! Danny 😊🌱
@@TheGrowUpChannel Aww that's nice of you. Yes the kids just sow the things in cups or get the parents to save big yogurt pots. Nature club is £4 here for an hour after school, one day a week. They got us to bring in milk bottles to make bird feeders for the kids to decorate and wind chimes, etc in the winter. Good luck with the sowing!
Hi Danny, the onions I'm growing are Ailsa Craig and Karmen (Red Onion). Only put them on my window ledge 8 days ago and they've both germinated strongly.
My ailsas failed twice on third and final try lol
That's the seeds I sowed. Maybe mine were dud seeds
Oh same!
Hello Danny 👋👋 Walla Walla onions are fantastic and sweet you can eat them like an apple.Great harvest from them, really recommend them 👌 thankyou for sharing ❤
Someone else suggested the same...thanks Joyce! I shall take a look into these... Danny 🌱😊
Globo onions have been the best for germination this year but i do love sturon onions and they did well for me last year, we are still using them.
Ahh thanks jen! I think everyone's misunderstood what I meant 😂 i didn't mean just the onion variety.. I meant where they bought them to guarantee it's good seed aha. Ps where did you get your seed from? Good germination? Aha x
@@TheGrowUpChannel whoops 🤭 Kings seed have had good germination for me this year. Also have a few varieties from Grown local, just starting to pop up now. No show from my Premier seeds direct onion seeds this year.
@moorsidegardener it's my error for not explaining.. Not the viewers haha! Thank you Jen! X
Hi Danny, iPods charged and working this week 😂😂😂😂😂. I have grown a red onion Redspark, white Bonus F1 , Bedfordshire Champion and shallot Zebrune. They have all germinated on my kitchen window sill. Took about 10 days. Just moved them to my green house. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Haha! GOOD! you made me run upstairs to the computer last week 😂😂😂😂 I am on it! Thanks for your suggestions. Danny 😊🌱
My fav storage onion is called Patterson. Not sure you can get them. Love those Red of Florence ...I had a few bulb up last year and wow they were good storage onions for a red.
No I've not heard off Patterson Robin! Set or seed? Long ted Florence are lovely onions :)
@@TheGrowUpChannel From seed.
Oh really. I've searched and can't find that here. X
Broad beans can be roughly mashed as an alternative to potato. I’ve also eaten them straight out of the shell. I’m growing some this year.
Oh wow! I don't think I'll be that adventurous haha
Great video Danny . So that’s why I couldn’t find Zebrune sets . I had poor germination of the first seeds I grew 🤞🤞for the 2nd sowing 💜💜
Haha! Oh good luck with your second sowing! Danny 🌱😊
Fab video!
I like that seed case. It would mean that my seeds would be in one place and organised, not tucked away behind photo frames, and in about every room in the house 😅
HAHAHA! I've popped a link to it, in the description lol
@ thank you 😊
Very nice video, the reminder for sowing brussel sprouts was timely as I always forget planning for winter/ spring vegetables . Have ordered Strawberry Spinach seeds as have tasty leaves and delicious red berries . Have you tried these ? Would recommend trying a small patch for anyone with a plot
That's the problem when you have to plan for a season so far ahead!! We never think that far ahead haha. Oh wow! No I've never heard of strawberry spinach! Wow!
@@TheGrowUpChannelI ordered them from Premier Seeds DIrect .
@virginiajarrell942 thank you :)
Well done class 6
They are the best! ❤️🌱
We're Brits - all that we do with broad beans is boil 'em and have them with the Sunday lunch. For recipes you probably have to look up what the Egyptians and Italians do with fava beans.
You're so right ! I've always wondered.. of all the countries we "visited" let's leave it there haha... we didn't pick up much knowledge regarding different cooking styles haha
Silverskin onions I'm trying this year for pickling. Xx
Oh i have something similar in, I've overwintered! Goodluck 🌱😀
Hi Danny lovely Vidio x have a great week xx🩵🩵🩵💚💚💚💛💛💛💛
Thank you Susan 😊🌱
Yellow onion Fasto germinated in 5 days for me Danny. They are pricked out into large cells and out in the grow house now. I grew Exhibition last year and got a little very crop of large onions. Still have some left in fact. 😆
A little very crop? Is this good mags? Haha ill take a look at fasto :)
@@TheGrowUpChannel blooming predictive text 🥴. I got. Very nice. Top of Exhibition onions 😆
@mycountrygardenchannel oh haha! I spent way too long trying to work that out mags.. presumed it was gaelic 😁😂😂
Great advice Danny, the seed sowing madness has begun. Take care for now
Thank you Michelle 😀 manic day! Only now replying to comments. Danny 🌱
Malcolm K used to recommend Globo and I’ve had good germination with those for the last two years.
Thank you! Yes I've grown Globo too! Danny 🌱
You missed Sweden’s and turnip from your brassica list. I love these too and was so pleased when I got some quite good ones last year.
Hey jayne. Wasn't missed. I don't sow my swede until March & April. Never heard of anyone sowing them in february. Danny 🌱
This was the 10th UA-camr video on February growing I've watched and so far Danny yours was the best but not watched Digwell, Tony O'Neil or yet 😉.
Oh I'm confident 😂👌
@@TheGrowUpChannelI’m crushed 🤣🤣
Ooo I’m going to be sowing some celeriac this month - thanks for the top tips (didn’t know that they should go on top of the soil so disaster averted!!) 😂
Oh phew! I only know this as I've learnt from my mistakes haha! Cover the pot too. If you don't have a cloche. Use clingfilm and put a few holes in the top :)
@ Got it! Thanks Danny!
iv just put in some spanish onions a few days ago and there coming through on a heat mat
Oh fantastic! I always remove at this stage and bring into a cool light room / greenhouse etc.. grow them slowly and strong 🌱❤️
@@TheGrowUpChannel I’ll try this I’ll leave some in the heat mat and take some off see which ones get on better
Great video Danny need to resow my onions this week only 4 of 40 germinated and even they are not growing
How strange so many are having the same issue....
Broad beans picked young and smaller quick boil then in pan with garlic and butter over some crusty buttered toast epic
Oh now you're talking! This is what I was looking for haha!
@TheGrowUpChannel thank Hugh fearnley wittingstalll i copied him
I managed to get one celery plant and all my celeriac failed last year. I’m having another go this year🤞🏼
Cover the pot to increase humidity... if you don't have a cloche.. use clingfilm with a few holes in it :)
@ thanks Danny!
DANNY, i sowed hytech onion, really good germination with no heat. Never tried them before, so i cant say what they're like.
Ooh really! Let me know how they get on Jean x
@TheGrowUpChannel I will. They seem to be growing well at the moment. I've put them out in the cold greenhouse now, I'll pop them into cell trays in a couple of weeks I think
@jeanhelliwell8160 oh perfect! Yes some leave indoors to mollycoddle then. Worst thing to do :)
@@TheGrowUpChannel yes, I did that the first time I grew onion from seed. They still did ok eventually, but I learnt my lesson.
@jeanhelliwell8160 me too jean. Haha. We live and learn. Lol
I try to sow something new every year, last year it was cucamelon, this year it’s chard and nine star broccoli.
Oh i wasn't fussed on cucamelons..was you?
❤
🌱😊
Got my basket tomatoes going. Trying t o get some early ones this year before the main crop kicks in ?
You're the opposite to me. I always look for late varieties to can haha!
My onions grew well last year but I lost half to white rot and the constant rain in July and August made impossible to cure them so I binned maybe 50 knuckle sized onions last year.
Oh I remember you saying! White rot! Can I ask.. was they grown in a no dig bed ?
Sadly yes I for the first time did no dig on the beds and put manure and compost round 3 inches deep
In November with black polythene to over winter the bed I mulched as well and don't normally mulch onion beds so as I usually grow them in the polythene as they grow bigger but not so good last year.
@ibrstellar1080 I guessed as much. I've found this too! The compost holds too much moisture. My best onions were directly planted in the ground. Doing the same this year.
@ I think it was exceptionally wet last year and the larger onions suffered the worst like the Stuttgarters.
@ibrstellar1080 yeah I agree. I've just found onions in no dig beds don't do as well when the weather doesn't play fair .
Globo onions grew really well for me, big onions though
Yes I've grown them before! I think I'll get some more seed. Thank you 😊🌱
The mice are going to ambush that seed tray Danny .
Hey susie. Which seed tray?
@TheGrowUpChannel The wooden one you've just said your going to put your seed packs in And leave in the polytunnel ! I left a pack of lettuce in a tray yesterday ,no sign of mice .Went down this morning ,one empty chewed packet 😂
Broad bean hummus
Ooh ill add that to the list. Thank you
Hi Danny can I sow my brassica seed in the polytunnal or do I need to do them at home ?
Hey Joanne! Oh for sure! You can sow them in the tunnel if you want. I only sow them at home so I can keep an eye on them. As soon as they germinate I take to the tunnel anyways. The only thing I sow at home and protect are beans and peas .. as the mice will find them and eat all your seedlings.
Thanks for your reply Danny... brassica sowing starts this week 👍
Goodluck! Pot them on when they are small.seedlings. if a little leggy you can bury a little deeper. except swede .. if they go leggy. Re-sow! Goodluck..Danny 🌱
My Bedfordshire champion came up with app 90 percent germination dead pleased. Under lights and with heat
That's what I sowed! Maybe I had dud seeds.
Aren't expensive veg and fruits a better investment of your space, time and money? Herbs, avocados, blueberries, strawberries, lemons, limes, cucumbers etc. Lettuce and onions hardly cost a thing in a grocery store. Although spring onions are costly.
Youve got a valid point, even though some of them are too difficult or impossible to grow here. I grow more for flavour rather than expense 😀🌱
Danny, cook your broad beans and peas together in water til soft. Drain add butter, chopped mint and mash them together. Serve with fish and chips, delicious 😋
Ooh a traditionalist! Haha
Hey Danny, I'll be doing most of these apart from Onions, Vince is allergic 🧅 great video as always 😊
🤦♂️😂😂😂😂😂😂
