I am an alcoholic, but I haven't had a drink for a few years now. Many years ago I went to Hazelton, the famed alcoholic treatment center in Minnesota. On my third day there, I experienced a mild case of D.T.'s where they had to stabalize me. On the first and second day, the friends I made told me I was walking and talking but not making any real sense. I assume I was being treated with librium, the benzodiazepine of choice for alcohol withdrawal. This was back in the early 90's and I don't remember a lot of it. Thanks to A.A., I was able to cope and successfully quit drinking. I "relapsed" a time or two since, but got bac k "on the wagon". Without it, I probably would have drank myself to death.

Did Librium actually help
I've been a heavy drinker around 2 liters to 2.5 liters of vodka sometimes more and I've had 5 detoxes the last 3 I was getting seizures when I tried cutting down my self, I never knew I had them until my alcohol worker came to my house and see me have 2 seizures and phoned an ambulance. Every detox I've had i start hallucinating around day 2 or 3 but the shakes start with in a few hours and get so bad I can't hold anything or eat my self or drink I have to have a babies plastic cup so my drink doesn't spill when I hold it .I never sleep aither for at least a week and I think that makes the hallucinations worse they get that bad I don't know where I am I've been talking to walls I've smashed things because it gets that bad I feel bad that I caused the nurses and doctors a bad time

CALL A "REHABILITATION CENTRE" AND SCHEDULE A PICK IF ANYONE FACES THE SAME SITUATION! THEY KNOW WELL HOW TO HANDLE!

I was downplaying symptoms due to having schizophrenia. Turns out I've been having withdrawals the whole 4 weeks I've been cutting down. Hope this helps someone.

Isn't alcohol Wonderful?
I've heard that people going through severe and even moderate withdrawls get prescribed benzo's sometimes.
Wouldn't benzo's just prolong the alcohol withdrawls since they both have an effect on Gaba?
It is tapered down. Just quitting cold turkey can be a huge suck to the body and mind. And it is very painful (I have done it many times). With benzos you are given a dosage and over a few days you are given less and less to where you body reaches a healthy equilibrium.
