This is one of the most holistic and sociable systems I've come across. Seems to really emphasize the minutiae of each individual contributing special personal qualities to a team.
Rolling an 11, or the Eye of Sauron is not an automatic failure. The feat day counts as zero. But if the sum of the d6s equal or exceed the TN, the skill attempt or combat attack succeeds.
The Eye though triggers negative effects.
An eye is automatic failure when a character is miserable.
Thank you for actually waiting until after you’ve played the game before doing the video! There are more than enough “box openings”, “flip throughs” & summaries.
This is my favorite TTRPG system ever created. Great video, BTW!
This video was a god send, thank you for taking the time to explain the systems. Not all heroes wear capes, some teach RPGs
Thanks Matt! I really appreciate the support.
Loved and subbed. Best explanation of the rules to date. Helped clarify some concepts that were a little vague.
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for making this! Great descriptions and explanations of everything!
Thank you very much! Glad you liked it.
My friend was telling me about the game and stumbled upon this video. Nice break down, sounds like a fun game!
Glad you enjoyed! - Zac
Loremasters also shouldn't feel forced by the three systems. An adventure could include all three or only one and there is kind of a fourth called skill endeavors that work kind of like councils but are to do a certain task. Delving into and exploring ancient mines in the misty mountains might be a skill endeavor, and a way to run exploration allowing characters to determine how they proceed. Some skills might be more or less useful. And these systems can be mixed and matched, a council might happen during a journey. Or a combat might trigger the start of a journey. Or a failed council might end in s combat, or have the players enter a skill endeavor to escape from people you wanted to ally with.
Thank you for explaining the game so well! Really helped me out!🎉
Nicely done! As much as I'm getting enjoyment from reading the book, it's good to have an overview. I hope it's as much fun to play.
Hope you enjoy it!
I really love the council rules!
Thanks a lot, I've shared this video with my group to help them jump into this game!
Awesome, thank you!
Fantastic overview! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for reaching out!
Just started a campaign in this system. Very excited, but still trying to get a grasp on the mechanics. This is pretty helpful in figuring out what my dwarf Messenger can do
Right on! A lot of it will click within a few sessions of play.
Thanks! I was waiting for a good TOR how to video. Please give me more
I'll do what I can. Thanks for encouragement!
Thanks man. It was better than a lot o contest about.
Thank you for the video, especially the pictures are very clear! 🤣
Thanks for making this video; very helpful.
You're very welcome!
Thank you! Very helpful!
You're welcome!
Brilliant explanation and graphics. Thank you. Please give us more on TOR
Thank you! I'll see what I can do.
Great video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great descriptioin of the system and game. Nicely Done! Really like your graphic re: Battle Stances...
Much appreciated!
thanks it is helping a lot
Absolutely! Thanks for letting me know.
Thank you :)
You're welcome!
Thank you so much. Such a well done and complete video. Just one observation. Why don't you add your Treasure points to the Load points?
You do! Sorry, I probably should have covered that, but you absolutely add Treasure to Load....which means you'll sometimes have to make hard choices deep within the mine.
@@WorldofGameDesign I can give you some feedback. I had the chance to talk directly with the author, Francesco Nepitello, in a book sign session, and he told me that the initial treasure points are not counted in the load, since it is supposed like you have them at "home". After that, any treasure you are carrying with you, you have to add these points to the load.
19:50 Where do you read on page 96 that the percentage of enemies attacking you depends on your stance? Maybe I am overlooking something, but to me it reads like the Loremaster puts one enemy against one close-combat hero (if there are enough enemies) and after that distributes additional enemies freely (limited by engangement limits).
I think he's just mistaken, forward stance just means you're easier to hit. The Loremaster is encouraged to assign any remaining foes to combatants in that stance, to a maximum of 3v1 (page 97), the rest goes ranged. The only % limit is that in order to be rearward, there must be 2 or more close combat allies, and enemies can be no more than twice the number of player characters (so company of 3 can have 1 ranged unless they fight 7 or more enemies).
So in the last edition the TN changed according to stances and now you gain or loose a dice according to stances and the TN is always the same right ?
Thanks ! :-)
I believe that is correct, yes. Having not played the original edition, I'm hesitant to compare them directly, but I believe you've got this right from the 2e side of things.
@11:16 so it is the same difficulty to lift 50 or 500 lb (20 subtract my strength rating for either)?
If something is supposed to be easier or harder, the Loremaster can modify the roll by adding or removing D6s.
Where did you get that character sheet? Haven't seen it before.
This is the character sheet that is available on Free League's website: freeleaguepublishing.com/en/games/the-one-ring/?downloads
@@WorldofGameDesign thank you for the link!! This is great!!
you think I should get this? or should I skip it and get The Lord of the Rings™ Roleplaying - EARLY ACCESS with 5e rules
i just read the new 1 isnt stand alone
Right. The new one is a 5e setting, so you'll need at least the Player's Handbook for D&D 5e to play it.
If you want your game to be heavy on combat and action, go 5e. If you want traveling from place to place and encountering important people to be meaningful, play One Ring. :)
You've doing a how-to-play overview, and just finished a campaign, but might not even get all the rules right? Why wouldn't you wait to make the video with better notes/script or edit it so that it is 100% correct?
Yes, TOR is indeed a model of poor game design. It's basically a board game masquerading as an RPG. Their hamfisted attempt to rehash the books misses badly in that they conflate roleplaying with roll playing. This is too bad, because the book looks great and they convey the feel of Middle Earth. So we're just using the ideas with a better system. I've even found a way to incorporate their special dice.
"A board game masquerading as an RPG" is a good way of putting it. It definitely strays toward that line. I still kinda dig it, but it's a hard thing to sell to a lot of folks.
Have you played Decipher's Lord of the Rings rpg? It's more rules crunchy, feels like a proper roleplaying game. I GMed a campaign (using old maps & books from the MERP system).
It was released back in 2002 but you can still find copies for sale online.
Just an absolutely fantastic video, explaining a rules set which is first class in terms of flavour, art, design and complexity-ruined by a thoroughly dopey mechanics set. I cannot fathom how anyone enjoys the mechanics generally or the combat specifically. I would advice everyone to buy this game, but use mechanics from another rpg.
I think the mechanics for travel are especially interesting and well presented, and I'm having a great time in my second campaign of this....but you're right. The combat struggles to convey energy or agency and feels like you've stepped into a more rigid, non-roleplay RPG for the duration.
