Sir, how do you say this is the first time Congress is pitching for lower taxes. It was the PVNarasimha Rao govt. which in 1992 reduced LTCG on equity to 20% with indexation ( earlier it was slab rates) in 1992. Again it was the Manmohan Singh Govt which further reduced LTCG to zero and STCG to 10% in 2004. Undoubtedly these gave great boost to the market. Also Dividends were tax free in the hands of the investor. ( Companies were required to pay a Dividend Distribution Tax).

His speech should have been about the budgets and how taxes are a burden on the middle-income salaried employees but, he won’t say much as the kind of promises he is making (blanket MSP guarantee, old pension scheme, guaranteed income) He will need to break the back of this middle class even more.
