Step 4: Actors
Actors are old hat and are just getting in the way most of the time, they can't even do their own makeup without getting help let alone get dressed.
So to fix this, I got Clint to wear a motion tracking suit on set and made him act out all of the other characters in the shot. yet another Big Hollywood issue solved by technology.
Peter Cushing and James Dean agree.
it's big brain time
@@MrChoklad HEY SAM, YOU'RE TOO OLD SO WE RE-CAST YOU WITH CLINT.
I need to see this. CORRIDOR PLS LET CLINT BE EVERYONE JUST ONCE
Oh yeah.. now we are talking!
I love how enthusiastic Niko is when he talks about cameras. It doesn't even matter if I don't do camera stuff, his enthusiasm is still so fun to watch.
His enthusiasm makes me want to make my own short films lol
Same nbla. Although I also do find audio syncing interesting anyway, simply because tom scott often includes his audio-syncing ques without editing them out. And even more so now that I got to imagine how exactly such a software solution would work.
And I also found the leds interesting because of tech connections doing a video on monochromatic light, and how using leds might misrepresent the color of objects.
Hm, there are surprisingly much in this video that I found interesting from other channels touching on it before :p
@@ther3aper561 then do it
I was curious at first y Hollywood doesn't use auto audio sync but then I remembered most of the cameras they use don't have built in mics. But I guess they could plug I. External mics into the cameras..... Idk tho lol
@@noahsduck4109 I really want to but I don't even know where I'd start
Netflix needs Corridor Digital in their lives. Real talk
for real.....mind.blown.
Honestly, Corridor Digital, Triune Films(Film Riot), etc. need to do something like what the education channels did with Nebula. I think a new Netflix analog could totally be a thing with a focus on new media production companies(being someone who co-owns an extremely small one).
I don't want to see how that would end
They’re too cheesy.
For both story and filmmaking
RE: Audio syncing.
What? Just use timecode. A fancy device like the tentacle sync is appreciated, but not even necessary. Just set everything to time-of-day. AFAIK, Resolve can sync multiple audio and video devices, each one to its own track, with just one button push. Then if they aren't quite aligned, nudge entire tracks left or right until they are.
The key here is that each device is perfectly aligned with ITSELF. The gaps between the clips are super important - they're still in real-time.
One issue with doing it this way, is that at midnight, time-of-day timecode resets to 00:00. So sometimes your entire shoot gets split in half, with the later stuff being placed at the beginning of the timeline. Then you have to awkwardly fit it back together, which can be tricky because the clips don't just get cut in half at midnight - they keep going until they're done! This problem is massively compounded if you've been shooting over multiple days, and try to sync EVERYTHING all at once - which will lead to overlapping clips. It's horrible. Instead, sync each day on its own. This should be easy, since your footage should be organized this way already, if you're being responsible and offloading the footage at the end of each day.
I don't like the just-use-the-audio-waveforms solution because it's unreliable. It can take ages to process everything, can still get it very wrong, and doesn't work for cameras capturing no audio or bad audio. Few programs have made me rage as hard as Pluraleyes. Maybe Resolve does a better job.
Timecode is simpler and more reliable, but ONLY if the camera supports it, and the camera guy bothered to set it.
Ultimately, even if you do prefer the waveform sync, it's still absolutely worth it to just tell your devices what time it is. Timecode works when all other sync methods fail, and has saved my ass many times.
Taran Van Hemert This is a really good run down of an easy way to approach timecode syncing, and I appreciate your attention to detail in laying out the edge cases where it might fail.
@@CorridorCrew no prob, Bob.
Timecode is also incredibly useful when you've got two crews filming on the same day in different locations, and the hosts call each other to talk about whatever it is.
Our long range wifi video comes to mind. It would have been an absolute nightmare without timecode.
Also I didn't mention... Even modern devices don't have perfect clocks, and will drift slowly apart as weeks go on. This isn't a huge deal but you do need to be aware of it.
Frankly, any device that doesn't support timecode, is worthless to me - I'd never buy it. Syncing without it is like untangling christmas tree lights - exponentially more difficult the more strands you have.
Taran Van Hemert drift is not an issue if you sync your clocks to dcf77. Good clocks in Europe have that feature.
Or with modern IP based systems, sync the, to the same ntp server. Do this a few times a day and drift is no issue - unless you have a Russian station clock ;)
Can't you use 24hr time format instead?
Just wondering, is this whole sync issue only to get multiple channels together? Shouldn't it be part of the video file itself, like an AVI with as many channels as you need. You'd need some sort of camera that has MANY audio-ins, but why not? It would simplify everything if sound would be with the image at all time. Or am I missing something?
I'm not into film making but hearing Niko explaining stuff is so entertaining

hey Niko/other corridor guys reading this, as a sound recordist i do want to point out that Slating can still be a helpful tool in your arsenal. yes a lot of editing softwares now have waveform sync options to make audio syncing much easier and faster. the problem with this is that the camera audio and recorder audio must match or it wont work very well if at all. it seems like you were working in an enclosed space that allowed you a lot of control over the sound that you were recording but sometimes you arent so lucky, Mainly if youre shooting on location and it happens to be a noisy one (whether from AC units, Refrigerators, cars/highways, etc) it may affect how the sounds are recorded to your different devices and make waveform syncing more difficult if not impossible depending on the contents of your scene. Another problem that you may run into is that some cameras might not automatically record audio or maybe the camera audio gets lost through any number of means and then you cannot waveform sync at all. this is why slating is such a useful tool. Because as long as you record the sound of the clap correctly and the video of the clapper closing, you will always be able to sync your audio. I'm not saying you should always slate, but just like how backing up your footage onto multiple drives can save you from losing your footage if one dies, the same can be said about slating being used to cover your ass just in case you can't waveform sync for whatever reason.
^^^
Its not only for synchng. I appreciate this channels that make possible good films with a low budget. But Hollywood its a whole other level. And everything in those sets had a reason. Editing is really expensive. Even more when they have animation in It. So the slate shows where the scene really starts at each clip. So the editor don't loose time waiting ALL team saying, sound ok, camera ok, etc ok (because some fx films have a Lot of things to be ready)
Searching for the start of the scene. So they jump directly to the Action. This is more time saving. Is money saving.
Its the longest comment I’ve ever seen :o

Niko just systematically destroyed the "Hollywood Way" in 16 minutes.
Honestly I’ve been using the record to a mixer and sync to camera audio method since Final Cut Pro x came out. I haven’t completed as many short films for one reason or another, but when I was recording live theater with three cameras this method helped significantly in post. FCPX has had this capability for about ten years and it has always worked like a dream there. I’ve synced take 1’s audio to take 2’s video and it was pretty close because they had so much in common. On the other hand I’ve had videos with audio identical to the audio I was trying to sync it to using premiere and it just couldn’t with no explanation. I’m using media composer now as much as I can, but the audio synchronization in FCPX was so easy I certainly was tempted to never switch over.

All he's done is make an expensive and high quality youtube short, not a full length, cinema released film.

The slate is still incredibly important. Even Hollywood uses automatic syncing nowadays, but you also need a visual cue of every shot. The script supervisor writes down which takes are best, and which are problematic, so the editor doesn't have to watch each clip one by one. He knows everything by looking at the slate in the thumbnail. That's why it's also important to position the slate before pushing Rec.

100% honest advice: DON'T start with money. If that was the impediment nobody would get anything done ever. Shoot with what you have and prove yourself. People want to jump in and help when they see that someone is moving ahead and getting things done.
Look at Robert Rodriguez and read his book "Rebel Without a Crew" to see how he raised some money and borrowed gear to shoot his first movie.

My favorite Corridor Crew video I've seen in a long time. This is one reason why I want to get into acting. It's interesting to see what goes on behind camera and the process of making the project you're working on
One of the main problems with LED lighting that you didn't mention is that warm/cold white etc from LED is different to that from halogen with colour correction gel. LED light does not have a smooth distribution accross the visible spectrum, and so gives a harsh, clinical look, especially with skin tones. LEDs are used when their many benefits outway the drawbacks, but it's frequency curve is a big negative.
Jonathan Keeley you can grab a swatch book of gel for like 3 bucks.... get a flashlight the same color temp as your panels, test that way
Came here to say this. Let me expand on this a little - the problem isn't the LEDs themselves (at least not anymore - the spectrum of white LEDs has been getting better over the years to the point of being almost on par with incandescent lights [still depends on the brand and price]). The problem is RGB LEDs - using RGB will never replace a gel because you can't reproduce a specific spectrum of light that way - you can only make the light appear similar color to the eye or camera, but its spectrum will be all over the place and it will negatively affect the colors of everything in your scene.
In other words RGB light has 3 monochromatic lights so its spectrum is just three separate peaks whereas incandescent has a smooth line all across the spectrum.
You can fool your eyes and your camera into seeing the RGB LED as the same color as incandescent light with gel, but the same objects under these two lights can will appear to be different colors because most things absorb different parts of the spectrum differently (unevenly).
Here's a good video demonstrating this:
ua-cam.com/video/5U-F7EhLp7g/v-deo.html
tl;dr: RGB LED's can't replace gels because they don't produce a good spectrum of light and different objects as well as human skin react really badly and unpredictably under RGB lighting. Using white LED's with and without gels is completely fine though as they are nowadays really close to incandescent lights, though they still differ a lot between brands so they ar not as consistent as incandescent.

Really cool, Niko! Couple of things: 1) There is also the amazing PLURALEYES, which I have used on a 8 cam concert video shoot and it synced even bad audio perfectly, and has been around for a while. Possibly DaVinci licensed the tech from them? 2) I can still think of some other reasons you might still want to use a clapboard ... not the least of which is for when you organize your clips. Not crucial, but makes it a lot easier than having to listen for the scene/take, etc. info. Also a good backup if the sync fails for some reason.
Honestly, DaVinci Resolve should have paid for this whole video. Your description of the features and how much of the complexity it removed from syncing audio and mixing sources was the most convincing and natural advertisement for that element of Resolve I have seen.
"First things first", I can only ever think of the song Fancy when someone says that.
Niko: wants to save budget on making a video.
Also Niko: pays someone to re-illustrate all the drawings he did in the video.

Anthony with Corridor, two of my favorite universes collided and my life is whole now!
Who is Anthony?
@@ayasugihada one of the two guys who created Smosh. He's since moved on to do his own stuff.
@@mondelsson thx. never heard of it
@@ayasugihada Smosh was the #1 channel on youtube for a long time before PewDiePie took their place
And i was here wondering if that's just my brain tricking me.
This is incredible. for me and what I do this is the best video I’ve seen from you guys, I just learned a whole LOT, thank you guys a ton, I’m stoked to see the short film!
Niko is just Extreamely passionate when he talks about filmmaking it literally glues your eyes to the screen 🖤
I wish niko was a teacher at some college, I don’t even care what class, I’d enroll just to listen to this guy talk.
I don't know if they write these segments ahead of time and practice them to make them sound so eloquent and well spoken, but they are really, really good at explaining things. They need to do a Corridor Crew series where they just explain things.
Christopher Russell Actually the channel was mostly like this before the react series popped up.
Someone get him a body guard, because the hollywood unions are going to put a hit out on him.
They're gonna send all the grips he's gonna put out of a job. It'll be like the Burly Brawl from Matrix 2.

Sponsored segment was fantastic, loved the alien's particular way of speaking
Freaking love Niko and corridor. I've been using Davinci and had no idea u could sync sound like that. Ur helping me out so much. Love the content, keep it up.
It's so fun learning from you Niko.
can't wait to watch the short film!
I love the episodes where they teach us stuff. Sam did one on audio recording a ways back and I used a lot of that information when I was putting together the recording system my wife uses for VR streaming/recording.
Why does this idea sound like a black mirror episode lol
Awesome. That's 1 of the best videos from you guys. I had no idea how complex that business is.
I like all your points about how modern technology has created tools allowing for a much smaller crew to complete a film as opposed to even just a few years ago. The part I found hard to follow was when you mentioned "no budget" as one of your requirements. I think it would be better to say, "no additional budget" because: A) you already own the BMPCC 4K B) you already own the digital LED lights C) you already own the gymbal D) you already own
He's being figurative when he says "no budget." He means "no budget" in comparison to even the cheapest of hollywood movies. The technology used is well within the range of middle class hobbiest.
First of all there’s a saying in film production. Why buy when you can rent!
If you don’t do a lot of productions you can rent this all for about 500-800 bucks for a weekend. Rent smart, you can often get better deals for renting over weekends or major holidays. I have specials during the week as I then tend to not produce myself, just do VFX or programming.
When you are serious and frequent film maker, then having a few cameras a few good lenses, some lights and audio gear is not that weird.
I am a parttime freelance VFX guy and I have all that stuff, accumulated over the last 11 years, including a small studio space that costs be 650 a month. And the investments weren’t insane - especially since I did them gradually. And often based on a client request, so I could invest in some gear and have an immediate rtoi
Because hardware is so affordable. The really costs are people.

Thomas Becker are you saying they get paid too much?
I've just finished my first semester of college, majoring in film production, and nearing the end of the first set of classes, I wasn't sure if what I wanted to do would end up working out. Seeing this video gave me the hope I was looking for to keep going with it, so thank you, Niko (and everyone else) Now the hardest part will be convincing my friends the 19th time is the charm!
You are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this video. I am looking forward to seeing the short. I want you guys at Corridor to make a full feature film. I would pay to see that.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, YOU ARE A GREAT ISNPIRATION TO US ALL SMALL FFILM MAKERS THAT WANT TO SUCCEED IN THIS GENERA.
