Hey Flint FYI, I was looking for these videos on your channel page, these are only found under the livestreams tab, I dunno much about running a channel but it may be worth a quick edit and re-upload as a normal video? Im not sure how much it matters really lol

In 1964, aged 13, my parents gave me a subscription to National Geographic. I was hooked, especially on archaeology. But when an article on Neanderthals was published saying they had died out despite overlapping with homo sapiens, I questioned this. Despite knowing nothing about interbreeding, I knew enough to believe that if there had been an overlap, there would have been interbreeding. It has been very validating to my teenage self to have this proved as time went on. I should write a paper on it myself! lol. Thanks for this great talk. From Australia.

Flint! I loved this #realarcheology series. I learned so much from the videos I was able to catch and look forward diving into the ones I missed. Kudos to you and all involved with putting this together. A triumph in my humble opinion.

@1:09:00 reminded of James Burke's dictum that anything that can be understood can be explained, and its the job of the science journalist to do that. My flipside footnote: if you can't explain something to others clearly, it's because you don't really understand it, and its the job then to clarify your own understanding to where you can do so.

This was a fantastic discussion. Thank you so much for the #RealArcaeology series - what an absolute treat for enthusiasts such as myself. One question, how did Denisovans get into Papua New Guinea? They would have had to cross the Wallace Line, does this mean they had boating technology?

Weird/dumb question: did early modern sapiens and Neanderthals “know” or sense there was a difference or they were different types of humans?

  • @mrwelshmun

50:00 On the point of Hybridisation.. Would you not be able to tell from the shape of the hip whether or not birth would be viable? I think it would have been easier for a neanderthal to give birth to a homo sapien hybrid rather than a homo sapien giving birth to a neanderthal hybrid, just purely because of the size of the head. The female would need to be able to birth effectively and that's surely easier if you have bigger hips?
Did neanderthals have bigger or wider hips? I'm just assuming, I have no clue.
