I love Molly's progressive music and I am behind her for life. I love Nickel Creek, and Alison Brown, the Kruger Bros, and Bela. I've seen Bela over 30 times live and I am also with him no matter what he puts out. I just keep listening until I understand it. Molly is a great force for bluegrass and acoustic music and we are so lucky she is on the scene.
Molly Tuttle In a league of her own been a huge fan of herself and Aj Lee.. This interview filled in the gaps and that she has remained focused. ... She is a DEADLY guitarist Singer-songwriter extraordinaire We love her HERE Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters
This woman is a brick. I love her qualities , they really radiate in performance but she sure carries herself with huge grace in conversation. Tom's interview is a real pleasure to experience here.
I love Molly, and I try to share with my growing 2 year daughter some guitar skills so maybe she will play guitar and will be such a kind and bright person. Greetings from Russia.
This chick is completely outta control. 😊 She is a breath of fresh air for bluegrass music. So talented. So genuine. No doubt she draws non-Bluegrass listeners like nobody else.
Firstly, thank you for a long and thoughtful interview, taking the time to examine issues, and not just grabbing a sound bite and then moving on. Molly seems to be a beautiful soul, as well as a beautiful person and a superb musician.
I'm late to the party on seeing this interview but have watched Molly Tuttle's videos and performances for a long time. She is a straight up guitar jedi! I can hardly wait for a show that comes close to me so I can hear her in person.
I love hearing and listening to Molly and I love this interview because she talks about how she started and discusses song writing which I love to hear about. I'm sure I'll come back to listen to this again. Molly is the best! I can tell she is such a good person also.
When PG&E shut off our power during the Sonoma County fires, I actually got to read some real books. I happened to pick a couple of books that really pulled some things together from my past. A lot of things started coming together, so, yes, the lights came on when the power went out.
Hey Tom, just became aware of her. Really like her simple honesty. As a songwriter, flat picker and singer she is amazing. Nice to hear her stories. Thanks!
A great interview! She has such a natural way of explaining her first experiences of finding the guitar and realizing that was the instrument she loved and how with her Father giving her pointers it all came together. Also, how we all have struggles and through understanding can help each other. The explanation of how to play the clawhammer style on guitar was done very well and really made it something that could be done if you were interested in learning that style.
Extremely enjoyable and informative Interview. I knew nothing about Molly Tuttle until today having stumbled across here on UA-cam very very enjoyable and courageous person.
Wow ... man! She is just so wonderful in so many ways ;) I've watched a bunch of her youtube videos over the years when she was just a young girl, playing with her father and brother, so its not so surprising to see Molly grow into such a great artist ! I've heard a few songs of her new stuff , which are really good, ... I really like Bluegrass and her Bluegrass play'in but I think its great that she's pushing the barrier of the genre , and I think she's such an accomplished player and authentic " real-deal" talent , that well anything she does is going to be interesting and good .... and I like the way she says "yeah ! " ;) ha! .... and the nice guitars she plays ,her appreciation for early Bluegrass , and how grounded she is ;) Love you Molly !
When Molly Tuttle won guitar player of the year I never even thought about the fact that winning it as a woman was unique. All I thought was “of course she won, she’s one of the best players I’ve ever heard period”. There’s also something very pure and genuine about her. She just seems like a good soul. Needless to say I’m a big fan.
People have been tinkering with the "boundaries" and definition of Bluegrass ever since Bill Monroe cantankerously laid down rules for what it can and cannot be. There's plenty of room for those who want to take it well past the traditional paradigm, and there's plenty of room for those who just want to be traditional. And as Molly is illustrating there's absolutely no reason a person can't do both and do both quite well.
There is no “Bluegrass Barrier”. True Bluegrass has and always will survive on it’s own. It is a personal, shared experience and not some commercial enterprise!
I've been following Molly's music since the Tuttle Family Band ft. AJ Lee showed up on UA-cam years ago. She's pretty amazing as a musician and a person.😍 This interview was just a bit strange though, and I'm disappointed that she didn't actually get to play anything before it finished.🤔
I have to say, I am a bit disappointed in her "new direction". I heard her live and the songs lacke "grab" to them. LIke some producer told Molly "Go POP-ish". Also, I'm going to say something that's going to concern and maybe upset ALOT of you. Molly has always been a "slight" person but she was mere BONES when I saw her do a record show concert last Saturday, August 23rd, 2019.Was very pale and appeared tired. She could barely manage a smile. I understand her other underlying medical issues dating back to her as a teenager BUT she looked thin even on TV a week before. Much, MUCH worse than here. She was sitting on the bumper of her van after a short record store gig making a phone call. She looked like she felt a non-spry 85..
@@bryankeller3492 She doesn't have medical issues outside of being bald from alopecia .i think the rest is in your head, the album sounds more pop because shes 26 years old and listen to music you and i don't .there is nobody making her do anything it's her choice.if she didn't smile is she most likely didn't feel like smiling.if it was a record store gig she still had a gig to get to latter that day.
So I’ve heard your new stuff and I heard what you said here about the dynamics of changing. You have to evolve, you just have to do it when your brain tells to, it’s not really even a choice. I remember when each new Beatles album came out people would freak, not always in a good way. It’s hard to imagine maybe but they were so very different and people just wanted them to not change. Now the hard push to innovate is part of the obvious genius of what the Beatles did. Anyway, you need to play for us what’s inside your head. So far it’s pretty amazing for the rest of us out here what comes out of your head. Some day you and everybody else will understand. Thanks.
clawhammer was evolved or invented by guys who worked all day swingin' an ax or clinging to a plow and their hands were so cramped their fingers wouldn't uncurl
Pretty and talented, Molly has it all. Some of the so-called "artists" should listen to this interview. Many are so full of themselves. it is nauseating to listen to them. Many of them can only sing too, no instrumental talent at all! Great interview.
Saw Molly and her band a couple weeks ago at the Hotel Cafe in LA near Sunset and Hollywood Blvd, Avenue of the Stars, etc, the venue holding maybe 100, which was/is not really a cate or a hotel. Phenomenal performance. Standing ovation.' Edit: You had Molly there with her guitar, you mentioned The Light Came In, and also Take the Journey, and didn't have her strum a few bars of each? Good grief.
I was waiting for them to mention her relationship with Billy Strings. So far, one brief comment. I am really hoping that Molly and Billy combine forces and do a tour together, not just the one number together when they are performing at the same festival.
Saw Molly in person earlier this year. Was expecting songs like "White Freightliner" and other standards on you tube. Didn't happen. Didn't even have a banjo on stage. I understand her wanting to promote her CD and the songs on it but I paid to hear some of the old songs too. The fiddle player did most of the lead breaks which was disappointing. Actually the opening act Zoe and Clode was much more enjoyable.
Berklee......huh! They must love the story of all 1's now that Molly is Player of the year. If I were her I wouldn't even mention Berklee from here on out.
Nah, she just didn't have the background in "being in music school" that they kind of expect. Just a little small-minded there. Sounds like they got over it pretty well, and she doesn't seem bitter about it.
I hope not. On the video for "Sleepwalking" from her new album (beautiful song and video, btw, in which she appears sans wig, still beautiful), there's lots of comments praising her for starting her "real" career and hoping she can be "the next Taylor Swift!". Ugh.
It’s a testament to Molly as a person and professional that this is still a great listen even though the person asking her questions is a poor interviewer. Great job, Molly.
Oh my... I’ve had alopecia areata for many years. I’ve thought Molly was attractive before but now my imagination runs rampant! Ever since the first Star Trek movie... you know what I’m talking about. Smooth as silk. No shame, girl. Sexy as all heck!
I am so sick of this nonsense about women "breaking barriers" in 2019. Maybelle Carter was one of the most influential guitarists in history. Alison Krauss has been immensely popular as both a vocalist and instrumentalist for 30 years. The same goes for Rhonda Vincent on mandolin. Sierra Hull, Sarah Jarosz, Alison Brown... The "barriers" are imaginary. If a woman is a brilliant musician, and does the work, she will get the same respect as a man.
@@csmith5420 Lack of "representation" isn't the result of barriers, it's the result of lack of interest or ability in the group in question. There simply aren't very many girls interested enough in Bluegrass guitar to achieve that level of skill and notoriety. If you can name a female guitarist who should have beaten Bryan Sutton or Tony Rice, I would be thrilled to listen to her.
Does she interface at all with the Chris Thile sphere of influence--Brittany Haas, the I'm With Her crowd, and the like? Is there a divide between the "progressive" guys and her? Would love to see her on Live From Here.

She turned this Metal guitar player into a Bluegrass fanatic!
I've appreciated Molly Tuttle for her talent, but now I also admire her for her honesty. You're a beautiful person Molly however you present yourself.

What’s not to love about Molly? So talented and so natural.
