Utterly unlike any western I've ever seen or read. Slow, tension-filled, building to a BIG and unexpected payoff at the end. I'm glad I did not read a synopsis of the plot before watching. The cinematography is breathtaking. And although the flashy performance is by Cumberbatch, I admired Jesse Plemons' understated, touching performance as much.

    • @AlexanderDunetz
      @AlexanderDunetz 2 роки тому +5

      Benedict Cumberbatch IS American .
He is born as Benjamin Butterworth in Seattle Washington.
Mother (Carole Smith) , Father (Blair Butterworth) , brother (Drew) are all Americans living and growing up in Seattle , WA , USA .
His mother , Carole , writes to me in the early 90's to introduce her sons with a photo which I promptly digitized , printed back a copy , and "drew" (defaced) with horns , pirate attire , missing teeth , the regular stuff. I also scribbled a suggestion for a "Hollywood" name for her eldest son Benjamin , who was an aspiring thesbian (not lesbian).
While sitting at my Mac work station that same morning the TV behind me was showing PBS Reading Rainbow hosted by LeVar Burton.
Burton narrated a review of the children's book :
      Benedict and the Cumberpatch.
If I ever get "recognition" from his mom for having funneled to them the name which they chose to use as his moniker to ascend the top of his profession (mainly UK) , I be gratified and happy as a troll in an English garden.
      No shit , Sherlock !!

@@AlexanderDunetz u sure you didnt just happen to accidentally suggest to another family with the common name benjamin this and its just a weird coincidence? bc this ben is a world-famous actor I think it would have broke by now if he was secretly America, also his brit accent is insanely strong and all his official information says he's born and raised in London soooo

    • @AlexanderDunetz
      @AlexanderDunetz 2 роки тому

      Ella :
We presently function within a civilization in which fake , fraudulent , and swindle are the "New normal".
      The timelines betwixt
      Benedict Cumberpatch
      and
      Benjamin Butterworth
      are a cozy fit.
      They do not overlap.
      Benedict's British accent is acquired.
      Benedict's Western accent is homespun.
Take that "official information" you are gullible to accept and review it strained through the skeptical paradigm that ALL evidence requires stringent verification.
      Benedict's English parents are shills.
The main thing is that "Check your sources."
      becomes primarily requisite.
Even 2nd-hand info is now more incredible than not.
I should track down Ben's mom , Carol , and put it to her.
      I anticipate being lied to.
No big deal an actor's dual persona is compared to repeatedly being lied to by municipal constabulary as to their knowledge about politically-motivated mass murder within their jurisdiction , L.A. County.
That's the toxic serious felonious business I am sweating to untangle presently.

There’s tons of Freudian takes in this movie. To whomever says it’s boring has low comprehension. It’s what’s not being said that’s telling the entire story. This movie is absolutely brilliant. Just watched this a day ago. I think the ending comes in a bit abruptly, but when the one nit about the film is that it could be a half hour longer to offer more build and context to the climax, and its already a two hour long film...it just shows how good a film it is. Most films are overlong if they extend beyond 100 minutes. It's pretty much a masterpiece. It's also a better film than The Piano, so it's Campion's best to date. And on a visual level it's mesmeric. Stunning scenery, beautifully shot, without the excessive colour desaturation that ruins the photography on so many modern movies. Filmed in New Zealand, btw. Are you kidding? It gives away everything the ending probably with a murder, Benedict Cumberbatch kills or is killed. As per my comment above. Again probably spoiler alert if you have not seen it yet. But pretty obvious.
Benedict Cumberbatch is a sexually repressed and frustrated gay man over compensating. Him scowling at the effeminate boy showing up, and he targets him 0:39, probably for the whole first act, a classic, and over done attraction and loathing himself for being attracted, so takes it out on the one he is attracted to.
Then gives in and starts to groom the boy in the second act, 1:19.
Then the in the final act 1:31 scene ties it together.
As the boy is attending a grave he kills Benedict's character for something that Benedict's character does to his mother. Maybe kills her when she figures out he's trying to get into her kids pants.

@@Lamidemonami7891 that's fine, I know she's not the main character so that's okay, I don't expect much seeing her in this movie cuz there's Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead, atleast seeing Thomasin in a Jane Campion movie is already enough for me.

@@craigledger4645 no problem mate, I've seen Last Night In Soho twice in theaters and I cannot praised Thomasin's performance enough, the main reason why the movie was great and enjoyable is because of her and Anya Taylor Joy's performance. She's easily one of the most promising young actress working today, I've been looking to her filmography just to see what else she does and she done good performance in her other movies especially Leave No Trace which was her breakout performance. Since then I'll watch any movie that has Thomasin in it including this eventhough she will have a small role, that's totally fine, there's also Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Jesse Plemons all actors I do admired. So yeah, I'm really excited for this movie because of the talent on screen and the talent behind the camera. So far this movie is getting really good and I'm all for it!!

Good film, but not for everyone. Audience needs to be prepared for a quiet, subtle, brooding melodrama. To follow the film, you need to pay attention constantly to the many muted social interactions and how they motivate/affect everyone. If you're just looking for a good old western romp, or something to put in the background while you look at your phone or chat with friends, this isn't your film. If you are prepared for that kind of movie though, you'll find some spectacular acting, camera work, and direction here. Reminds me a bit of a Coen brothers film, albeit minus the comedy or absurdity.

the fact that they had to go to New Zealand to film amazing unspoiled beauty says alot about how we have mismanaged and over developed our country with roads, telephone lines and fences criss-crossing every square mile from coast to coast. thank god our leaders saw fit to set aside sa bit of it for parks.
