  • This shows how to play the main melody of "The Smoothie Song" by Nickel Creek on the mandolin. I couldn't find any accurate tabs online so just listened to it meticulously a few times and learned it. Once I have more time and learn it in its entirety, I will post a new video, explaining it more thoroughly. Hopefully this at least gets you started. I'm just learning how to play so I'm right there with y'all!
    Cheers,
    Steveo

You don't suck at all, you say you're a new player? Well there is hope in the world for the rest of us. You're doing good. I'm still just getting chords down. My first week. Never played anything since the flute in school band in 5th grade. I love bluegrass so it keeps me going.
    Thanks for posting!

Thanks! I'll do that. I play that one with my band, and I'm always looking for new ways to play it. :)

No problem! An octave mandolin is actually tuned an octave lower than the standard mandolin. Sierra Hull plays one. They seem really sweet! A bouzouki is a different instrument. I personally think mandolin has a much smoother tone and is certainly less stringy! I just posted a new vid in which you might be interested. It's the "Old Home Place" mandolin solo. Check it out!

Thanks for doing this! I'm trying to learn it on my octave mandolin, and this should help with that section a lot. By the way, I think I read somewhere that Thile played this on a Flatiron octave mandolin. A lot of times "bouzouki" and "octave mandolin" are used interchangably, but I think a true bouzouki has different tuning.
