Living standards are bad in Portugal. Numbers in foreign investment did go up and some other irrelevant points to the actual quality of life of the majority of portuguese. The GDP grows a lot with tourism, but for the population that means less houses, more hotels and AirBnBs, more expensive goods at cafes and restaurants, more expensive services in city centers, more noise in the streets at night instead of peace and tranquillity. That’s one the most common flaws of all politicians in several parties: it is to actually get the fuck out there and see the variety of problems people deal with every single day.

The 2019 election was supposed to end the 'chaos' of the coalitions, small majority governments and minority governments that had come previously, and yet all it resulted in was the most chaotic period in modern British political history.
3 Prime Ministers, a governing party at complete war with itself, millions of taxpayers money wasted, nothing getting done by the government, scandal after scandal, and the very worst of humanity on display. I hated David Cameron and Theresa May but the Coalition years were more politically stable than anything we've seen since 2019. Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak are three of the worst PM's we've ever had. Now we Brits are just having to count down the days we can end this Tory farce.

But... Ministers, not the prime, nor the president (their job is to be the visionaries and defenders of the constitution), should all go through what we all have to go through... a selection of the best for the desired position, based on facts based accomplishments in a particular area, ex: a super doctor for the Ministery of Health, a super Architect/Engineer/Urbanist for the ministery of infrastructures, etc...
Not "Galamba", or any other Baboon that studied economy, law or political sciences and is a rich lobbyist with private interests, should ever get the Ministery of Health or Infrastructures... for example... At the most Galamba could have been Minister of Economy, but not even that, because he was a dodgy guy, with private interests since the start... it's pathetic.. And don't even let me start on the UK, it looks way worst....
Corruption cases are often related to some of the selected MP's that sit at a Government table, with major private companies interests that are often hidden in far away offshhore paradises... It's a fact...

The mention of Costa's party assuring a majority because of his good policies shows a lack of research. It was assured at the time from voters from other parties like BE and PCP out of fear that Chega would rise in popularity after a State Budget was rejected by everyone except PS. There's a lot more context, especially because his "good policies" keep creating a housing and health department crisis for which the portuguese pay with a reduction of quality of life. And i say this but unfortunately there is no better solution because our right wing parties have even weaker policies and are purely populist that try to persuade the people through targeting minor issues

The problem with Portugal's living standard is the following:
If your salary is 2000 € gross (salário bruto) for example your employer pays actually 2530 €. Meaning that the actual tax on what the employer pays is 49% (you get 1289€). When buying groceries, gas / buying or selling a car, a house or anything for that matter there is huge tax. What this means is that all the money produced by an individual ends up being funeled to the government. And because almost every major sector seems to be colapsing at the moment (health, education, etc) maybe means that the money isn't really being used wisely.

    • @truedarklander
      @truedarklander 9 місяців тому

the actual tax rate for 2000€ salary is not 49%. When you buy a car you have to pay 2 taxes, 23% VAT and "Automotive Tax". On the price of the car the "Automotive Tax" is applied, then after that tax is applied the VAT is applied on top of the price of the car plus the "Automotive Tax". Even the EU already said it's illegal but they still do it. A police officer with 25 years on the force makes less then 1500€. A teacher with also 30 years teaching makes about 1500€ to 1800€. Those are horrible salaries compared to Spain, France, Germany and so on, because those are countries that our politicians like to use as reference to all that is good in Europe. The average worker is poor, the so called middle class has almost disappeared (salaries from 1000 to 2000) because they are the ones that pay the highest taxes. A couple with those salaries can't even afford rent or the mortgage payments on the house they bought, because everything is expensive. The video outlines quite well some of the recent developments, however the finishing part I can't honestly agree with. Of course it was due to Costa's manoeuvres that Portugal inverted the stagnant growth and declining living standards, the question is, at what cost? People in Portugal are living poorly and never seen before, we were on the very tail end of the economic growth table in EU post C19, getting overlapped by most Eastern Europe countries which tend to be the poorest historically speaking. So there was no miracle, it was Portuguese people exploitation, that's what it was, and that's why the fiscal charge is as high as it has ever been in the history of democratic Portugal.
Costa's party also didn't win the majority because they had a good program, they won because he suggested that left supporters should unite to fight against the right parties uprising and by doing so, Costa betrayed the very same parties he made an alliance with on the previous term.
So much could be said about this sh*tshow that it's almost impressive it took them so long to get out of there. Fortunately I saw this coming in 2019 and decided right there and then to leave the country. I don't want to be ruled by this kind of people and as soon as I could I left my country looking for a more promising future. I do not regret it a single bit so far.

The "Portugal Economic Miracle" and the increase of living standards, must have happened only to foreign investors, tourists, and the elite class, because the overwhelming population is struggling like never before. With many taking the opportunity to leave the country, which is an option the majority can't even afford to do. It's barely impossible to rent or buy property with the average earnings on your own, yet alone with minimum wage, causing a generation of adults, a lot of them reaching middle age, to move back into their parents house, and a new generation of young adults being stuck with their parents, unable to develop and mature like previous generations.
Don't get me wrong, the country has seen worst days, but it is the first time after the dictatorship, when the country is actually doing economically well, but the people are doing worst, without any war conflict or major crisis to justify it, aside from mass corruption.

The situation is much worse than it seems. Tonight, after the council of state, Marcelo will adress the nation regarding what will happen next. The most likely solution is that he'll dissolve the parlament because he is taking the necessary steps, according to the Portuguese Constituion, to do so. Yesterday, he has talked with every party on the Assembly and today he will hear the Council of the state. Elections will most likely be in February or early March. The issue with elections is that the opposition isn't very good and that is an understatement. The leader of the main oposition party, PSD (Social-Democratic Party), is everything but charismatic and doesn't transmit any kind of trust. The other parties, CHEGA (right-wing populist) and IL (Liberal Party) aren't keen on forming government with one another. If PSD wants to govern Portugal, they'll have to make a coalition with IL and even with those 2 parties, I don't see them winning majority. Saying that Costa’s policies were good and that he had “good hands” and as a recognition of this we the Portuguese people gave a majority, shows poor research and knowledge of the Portuguese political landscape and it’s offensive to those of us Portuguese who have two brain cells to rub together… Costa hasn’t been popular for a long time, his policies have created and exacerbated huge crisis in our healthcare, education, housing and taxation systems. The choice we had as Portuguese at the time was to choose the lesser evil, which as you can see less than two years later it still blew in our faces with all the corruption… so please do not elevate the man nor his party they have demonstrated to be corrupt and incompetent. He won because he was able to scare the people with the possibility of the government having a minority led social democratic party (PSD) supported by a right wind party (Chega). All of his campaign was based on that, and it worked. PSD grew in the number of votes, but so did PS (this one at the cost of the votes from the left. We call it a “useful vote”).

Nice video except the end talking about an Economic miracle thanks to Costa.
First, there is no economic miracle at all, even Romania as now more GDP/capita than Portugal that is close to be the lowest.
Regarding the debt crisis, The Troika intervention implemented the economic reforms to solve the debt issue and the ECB helped further by lowering interest rates. In 8 years, the few things Costa reformed or gahave done went to actually worse. He changed the public sector week hours to 35, augmenting the cost of the state, specially in the healthcare side. He changed the law of the public sector healthcare and stop the private partnership that managed the 3 best public hospitals in Portugal. Now, the health sector is in high crisis mode with lots of strikes and even those hospitals that were the bests now have some departments closed at some points.
Education is also in chaos also as the imigration side of police/adminstration since he chose to extinguish the SEF to create something else stupid.
TAP airline is a all disaster as you talked about, and it is importat to say that previous government managed to put in 100% in private hands but Costa reverted this at the beging of is mandate to 100% public, put in there more than 3B€ and now wanted to sell it to private again (not for more than 1B€) Same for Efacec.
He promised fair home prices and the price have skyrocketed
Fiscal burden is very high on portuguese too and keeps growing.
And basically he did not make more than that, the only thing correct is that he had the care to try to lower deficit overall

This doesn't come as a surprise to anyone who cares about politics in Portugal.
Since the beginning of his journey in the Costa parliament he has been involved in scandal after scandal (example: defendant in "casa pia" case, among others). Costa left the country's finances in a real SWAMP (namely TAP (more than 3% of GDP was lost there), in energy business / energy transition which magically all come under suspicion of corruption, railways, airports etc.). The miracle of Costa: to take into context, at the time of the troika the Portuguese had a tax burden of 31-32% and now it is around 37%, in the first Costa surplus public investment was lower than at the time of the trioka of " Passos Coelho", less investment more taxes...
And thank's god that the state budget could be stopped with all this, it was just even more tax burden.

Imagine a coutry-wide small town village situation where all young people have to move out because they don't see a future inside their little town/village and you have Portugal.

He didn't gain majority out of appreciation, but because a lot of ppl were afraid of Chega, a far right political party.
Majority was achieved with only 20% of votes, due to a high abstention rate.
    That's it.

Idealist politicians realise that reality is more complex, complicated, chaotic and contradictory than their utopian dreams.
This has been the case time and time again but people prefer to hear easy and populist solutions to complex problems rather than having a benefit-tradeoff mindset to more unpopular decisions that would benefit the population in the long term.
