Statistics are important but you have to look at defence also...so did the GK stats improve with Boly back. Also Sels came in January and had to hit the ground running. Whereas most of the other GKs had whole season so playing against strong and weaker teams. Sels is a good solud GK, good enough for Belgium. 🇧🇪
The biggest take I got from all those stats is that we actually defend well on the whole and if we had a capable goal keeper for the whole season and could defend set pieces we'd have comfortably finished mid table
8:19 is exactly it. Which is why the stats are mostly misleading when applied specifically to what Sels "should have" saved. Like the xGA vs Everton would've been a joke, especially because both their goals where precisely in the corners from WAY out. Neither of which did I think he could be truly held accountable for.
Great opportunity to really offload a lot of the poorer signings, send back the loan players, get our wage bill down and hopefully get a smaller and stronger squad together.
I would like to see video clips of the goals that Sels was apparently expected to have saved. Stats alone is not sufficient to make a correct analysis.
If MGW does go then I think we have to get Hamer in as he’s proved last year he can do it in the prem. Sara at Norwich could be worth looking at too. Need Sangare to step up next season too.
xG is a poor metric to compare keepers. Its difficulty of the chance so a precision worldie with a low xG shouldn't be a reflection on the keeper. Maybe someone need to create an expected save stat.
I think if murillo leaves to whatever team, the same would happen at his new team that happened with us. He would be that impressive in training that any team would be hard pressed not to start him. He's that good.
konate ,our best attacker has been released ??? and derby are interested >>>>> I cant believe it !!! He scored goals for fun !! Amazing talent.I was looking forward to seeing him in pre season ..... Who is responsible for this ?????
that XG data, could that also mean that some great goals were scored against us? Sels came in with the confidence of knowing that those that came before him were screwing up really badly...
I don't think there's any disrespect on show - it's just fact that Sels has the lowest Save Ratio of any first choice keeper in the PL. It's not something we should disregard if we're going to let our other keepers go and go shopping in that position. We should sign a player who can threaten his start rather than a backup.
@marksutherns6583 listen, you data guys crack me up. Is Utds defense worse than the 2008 Derby? They faced more shots on target? Your "data" would suggest so. All this hour long podcast shown me is that football is slowly dying. Fans thinking they know what they're talking about because of "data". Absolute joke. And then you say we should look at 3 relegated keeps one that conceded 100 goals, have I lost my mind? The fact this podcast can and probably does influence fans' opinions is scary.
Always enjoy Mark's contribution. I don't see him as negative at all, just pragmatic. For me, Sels is low event, although I don't think he is pro-active enough. I actually think Matt Turner is a better all-round GK, just more prone to a gaff.
there really aren’t that many goals, is it that difficult to match the xga with the goals and see why/how he was bad? do they release the xg/xGa for each goal?
Agree. Particularly the impact on keeper stats of the poor defending of set pieces. Presumably aa the stats for those are so bad they make our keppers stats look worse
Comparing keepers based on performance vs xG is such a poor statistical review As Mark perfectly stated, xG reviews performance of the shot-taker for the chance opportunity As a GK stat it doesn’t account for the quality of the shot (usually required to score in lower xG situations) - so if a GK faces a poor 1v1 finisher (Nicholas Jackson), then their stat performance greatly increases. Whereas if you concede against a goal of the season candidate the stat will make you look poor
getting annoyed watching this, watch the game, Sels is not nervous like Turner or too on edge like Vlach (IMO) he's got a balanced manner which pays dividends and data (currently) can't address the value of this on a defence and wider team throughout a game.
don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the content and love the manner of this channel, I just think that specicially goalkeepers are rated on save stats rather than gravitas which (look at Samba) enthuses defences to be better.
And as for the most recent charges re the Liverpool game and the so called uncontrolled crowd. Will Liverpool also be censured for their fans throwing flares onto the pitch?
Personal view…but I think we should have gone for Henderson..ok I know Man Utd were hard to deal with and he had a long term injury. But in the long term, I felt he was a good option. I really don’t rate the Greek GK. Turner is a decent shot stopper but a nightmare with the ball at his feet. I think Sels is ok but no better than that.
I love Yatesy, I feel he is really needed in his position as he is a brilliant disrupter and works incredibly hard and he is still young enough to learn!
We need to get rid of Steve Cooper players iam getting sick and tired of the Cooper fans good news is season tickets going up and what more we are getting out of the city ground into a bigger ground iav just love the owner 👍
I hate this xg bullshit it means nothing at all to me load of absolute rubbish judge a player with your bloody eyes not a piece paper every one that judges in that way is a fool in my opinion 😂
Sels only looks half decent because of the rubbish he replaced - there has been a good number of occasions when his goalkeeping had been pretty woeful - BOTH goals against Everton Away and Liverpool at Home were definitely his fault Yes, I think he’s good with his feet, but he does not and cannot command his area, he’s rubbish at claiming crosses and he’s often glued to his line All in all - he’s not very good and if he’s our Number 1 choice next season, I guarantee we’ll be around the relegation zone again
Another out of season chilled episode , Well done
Stephen from Thailand here again good show so far ,never miss a show

I agree that Sels is decent, but that last line is funny considering Turner is good enough for USMNT and Vlachodimos is good enough for Greece 😂

Mark and his data, is a cracking addition to this Podcast. I'd love to have a data focussed podcast every month.
loli was just kinda hnting the opposite
The biggest take I got from all those stats is that we actually defend well on the whole and if we had a capable goal keeper for the whole season and could defend set pieces we'd have comfortably finished mid table
and not a single one of us needed stats to deduce that
Matt appreciate that you've brought another aspect to us, thank you and thanks Mark
Great insight from Mark from a statistical & data analysis point of view 😊

Like the xGA vs Everton would've been a joke, especially because both their goals where precisely in the corners from WAY out. Neither of which did I think he could be truly held accountable for.
should have. could have , would have, stats said so lol
Great opportunity to really offload a lot of the poorer signings, send back the loan players, get our wage bill down and hopefully get a smaller and stronger squad together.
Very interesting stats Mark, although I can't actually remember Vlacodomos ever making a save 😱
ghost 2 wernt he, not sure i saw him peak a single word anywhere ever either lol
I would like to see video clips of the goals that Sels was apparently expected to have saved. Stats alone is not sufficient to make a correct analysis.
Nicely said Mark, I feel the same too about Forest!
A lot of our recent goal keeper issues - poor mid field and general defending gaffs……
If MGW does go then I think we have to get Hamer in as he’s proved last year he can do it in the prem. Sara at Norwich could be worth looking at too. Need Sangare to step up next season too.

lol or a stat for if a crowd goes ooo or eeeee after a shot
Be interested to know what sensitivity analysis is carried out on the stats.
Sels is a number 2 for me, the cross that passed him against Chelsea, what happened there?
I think if murillo leaves to whatever team, the same would happen at his new team that happened with us.
He would be that impressive in training that any team would be hard pressed not to start him. He's that good.
All our keepers have to play in front of a defence that cannot defend dead ball situations. So their save rate is bound to suffer.
konate ,our best attacker has been released ??? and derby are interested >>>>> I cant believe it !!! He scored goals for fun !! Amazing talent.I was looking forward to seeing him in pre season ..... Who is responsible for this ?????
we aint got 5 years to wait
Re CB...rumours are that Morata is interested in coming to us...keeping the Portuguese links going
that XG data, could that also mean that some great goals were scored against us? Sels came in with the confidence of knowing that those that came before him were screwing up really badly...
Exactly, XG is the % probability of the chance being converted from the place the shot comes from, not the quality of the shot from that chance!
I literally cannot believe they are investing in netball as opposed to basketball - A world sport!
Spurs will go for a cdm and a striker/ attacker before a central defender, they also have dragusin as well
I like Sels but if we can get better then a world class goalie makes a massive difference
does it really tho? it would still be 11th priority in my team
The disrespect on Sels' name is a joke!

for example the burnley deflection goal, if that’s a .05 xg because of where he shot it that’s not really a useful metric

Definitely Vlachodimos out and Turner isn't great with his feet but better with his catching and shot stopping
Sunderlands keeper looks a prospect
Very good GK, but not great with the ball at his feet.
What about the Arsenal No. 2 now? He has been decent for them and was unfortunate to lose his position to David Rays!

Keeper xg is false because of our inability to defend set pieces
