Mam...i have learned that xylem produced during winter has smaller vessels bcoz in these vessels there is very much lignin deposition making their lumen small...more lignin more conservation of water during unfavorable condition.and vice versa for spring vessels.....so i think this is the reason behind smaller vessels...
