In the Opponent's Style | Vasily Smyslov vs. Mikhail Tal, 1964 USSR Team Championship

  • Two ex-World Champions square off in a classic battle of styles. Vasily Smyslov, a careful positional player and endgame specialist, opens in his usual unhurried fashion but fails to obtain any advantage. Mikhail Tal, known for his tactical ability and brilliant handling of the initiative, seizes the center and launches one of his characteristic attacks. However, this game is bound to be decided on time-honored technical grounds: knight versus bishop.

I think it was in a Yasser Seirawan(?) lecture I saw awhile back that looked at a Tal game where he said that the variations of some of the famous Tal combinations are just as incredible as the flashy game continuations because the guy's incredible vision let him see chances to bail out into a pawn-up endgame after sacking a rook, or at the very least have a perpetual. Many of Tal's combinations were launched with the knowledge that what he saw as his opponent's best defense would lead to a small advantage he could grind out, which is a beautiful thing in and of itself. Thanks for the game, John!

I love the super long video format. All the explanations are really wonderful and I really appreciate all the work you put into this & hope to see the series continue in this fashion -- even with heavily strategical games, long explanations (of how players might go about formulating plans while keeping in mind their opponent's threats of defense or counterattack) are extremely useful.
I'll definitely be looking out to buy Tal's book, thank you also for the recommendation :)

WOW, what a fantastic analysis of a fantastic game. After watching this I immediately ordered Tals' book from Amazon. This is quite a complicated game and I will watch it more than once. This series is awesome, you do such a good job with the analysis. Kudos to you, and I hope you get your picture on the chess.com waiting page.

Obviously you can't judge Smyslov from one game, but I got a chuckle out of how you introduced him as a positional mastermind, and then detailed move by move how he worked himself into a bad position out of opening!

    2 things:
    1. John this series is amazing and at least for me JUST what i need. I'm master level but I know nothing of "the classics" and have been meaning to get towards it forever but I don't even know where to start or what qualifies as a classic or what games matter. PLEASE continue this and keep up the good work.
    2. I'm not going to pretend I'm even close to Smyslov's league but how can you play a move as terrible as Kxe1??? It's beyond obvious for anyone about 2000 level to see that the knight needs to head to e5. Such a decision is incredibly puzzling. Can't help but wonder what the old greats would be rated in today's game (and this comment is not at all saying Smyslov would be near 2000 or not titled).

I love that small yet crucial plan of getting the pawn from h2 to h4... I got about half of it. I saw that the king probably wanted to infiltrate(Also considered moving the king to the other side and sacking the bishop for a passed pawn on the a-flank)... I recognized h3, and understood that it was a weakness... I didn't find a way for the bishop to get to it though.
It's still cool, how you create two weaknesses instead of one and that being what wins you the game. Brilliant! What a ride that was. Excellent video.

It's a subjective opinion, based on facts, just look at the frequency of upload of videos, Jerry lags behind a lot. Furthermore, the quality too, all jerry has uploaded recently is just commenting on Magnus Carlsen's bullet games in lichess titled arena.

Great video and analysis, John! I noticed one line possible at 42:45. You mentioned that after white is forced to play Nd5, the king and pawn ending after Bxd5, cxd5 would be winning. That said, what would happen if white's kings were placed on b3 when Kc7 is played? That way after Nd5, Bxd5, cxd5 and Kd6 white has the option of Kc4. This may still lose for white after h6 Kb5 Kxd5 Kxa5 and c4, but it looks complicated to me. Kb4, cxd3 (or c3) kb3 and if Ke4 white can run the a pawn in time... Very interesting!

Really an amazing analysis, John. Thank you for your great efforts. I have a question: Was this 7.Na4 by Smyslov some sort of theory at the time? I simply cannot understand the move, and I recall him playing this exact line prior to this game once and then again in the 1970 Palma Interzonal against Fischer. What's the strong point about it? It just looks odd. And btw, he lost all 3 games.

  • @Uerdue
    @Uerdue 6 років тому

45:34 Actually, there is a slightly different winning plan as well:
    1. Bring the black bishop to e8 & king to f6, with white's king on a3 and black to move.
    2. Play h5 (threatening h4 followed by infiltrating). White has to defend with Nf3.
    3. Play h4 anyway. (Ok, this was the comp's idea, not mine... :p )
    4. After Nxh4, play Bh5. This threatens Be2, winning the d3 pawn.
5a. If white tries to bring the king towards the d pawn with Kb3, Bd1+ wins either the a4 pawn or - if white defends it with Ka3 - the d3 pawn after Be2.
5b. If white tries to bring the knight towards the d pawn with Ng2, play Be2, forcing Ne1. Then infiltrate with the king via g6-h5-g4 and you'll win the g3 pawn.
But your method with the immediate Bh5 is a lot easier of course. I guess the only "advantage" of this h5-h4 plan is that you don't have to pseudo-sac your b pawn to Nd7+. :p

You are not alone, I also had the same thought process. I think we fell for a common tactical mistake: forgetting that squares that are currently empty will become occupied halfway through the line. John talks about the opposite of this in other videos: missing that a square that is currently occupied will become empty halfway through the line. This made me realize I need to watch out for both cases.

Hey John, in the Perpetual Chess podcast you said that chess books and chess material in general has way too many variations and should have 1/4th of the annotations they do and focus on the main points. Yet here you made a 55 minute video on one game with lots of variations, apparently contradicting your own advice. Can you explain?
