    I need one of these, ever since I first discovered your channel and watched this video awhile back, I've just had to have one, not because of nostalgia as I wasn't around when this car was in production, not because it's super iconic in RC history or anything, just because I look at this car and think "wow" every time I see it. I really think I need to get the whole grasshopper/hornet family, because They feel very happy and playful to drive, and they just have this charm to them, I think the Grasshopper, Hornet, Grasshopper II, Super Hornet, and Rising Fighter lineup is are still some of the best RC cars to this day, because in my opinion the whole point of an rc car is fun, and these cars are the best when it comes to putting smiles on faces, and that'll always be the most important thing about an RC car in my book, regardless of laptimes. But speaking of laptimes I know it's old and slow in stock form but with some mods do you think I could race a super hornet?

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  5 років тому

      I totally agree with you. They are awesome. No way you can race one of these against a modern cars. Plus, the chassis is painfully weak at the front towers.

      Also cheap, every car hitting a higher price bracket ends up being a shelf baby becuase you never want to misshandle them.

    Sentiment is a helluva price point. I have a $3 , dog chewed , stained , faded teddy bear in my closet that $10k wouldn't buy.
    The Super Hornet has a cool look even after many years, and having one as a first RC, with all its attached fun memories, could make it priceless to the right individual👌. Great fun video !

    Love this series. It's such a beautiful job you've done with this body. Got mine second hand with the decals applied to the black plastic. Good comparison in the run video. By the way, what will you do when your neighbour fixes that side walk? :-) Looking forward to the Rising Fighter video.

      Thank you very much! My sister has her Super Hornet in box art too. It is actually a perfect example that we did around 20 years ago with a black painted shell, decals and clear coat right over them. Really nice! I wanted to go way different on mine and did not want it black. As for the side walk....i do not know....I have been planning on building little ramps that I can use. I think they will be much nicer! We shall see!

      definitely nice seeing video comparison of shocks vs stock springers, the games we played with those.... pen springs tiny washers and o-rings (inside shock body) for friction that'd wear out. same for hornet front using on road front springs over the tops, lowering the FE about 1/4 - 5/16 giving some (very little) negative travel and less bump steer. hornet racing early-mid 80's was always a LOT of fun! those early hornet skinny rear spring NOT SHOCKS, it was a trick to keep them from bouncing around. stretching a balloon over the MSC to keep dirt out of the switch grease etc.

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  6 років тому

      Yeah, we used to try all kinds of things! What do you mean the early hornet rear springs not being shocks? Oh and please don't remind me about the MSC balloon....

    Nice to see (what appears to be) a Black Motor Endurance (blue endbell), I had one of those. These motors were, together with the Black Motor Sprint (red endbell), among the first Tamiya motors with more performance than the standard "Silvercan". Regarding tires for the Hornet family cars, my impression was, as far as I remember, that the rather soft rear tires which were supplied stock with the Hornet, could to some degree compensate for the under-performance by the rigid rear axle.

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  7 років тому +1

      Yes those motors are great. I have a few of each of them. I really like vintage Tamiya motors. Those rear tires are rather soft but the fact that they are low profile to not help the suspension much. Well, that and I but way to viscus of a shock oil in those rears.

    You are right, those tires' (few knobs) here.. wear quite quickly (on any asphalt).
    I had the exact same ones on my almighty/great Tamiya Bear Hawk in the 90s. I used to slide around (/ do U- turns, understeering=scraping the fronts, ...) for fun, and so the tires' knobs went down -> they were 100% very very thin slicks at a time very soon. :) But still it was fun driving even with those slicks (spinning the wheels on power and such), at least.
    I almost guess the rubber was designed like this, so you "have" to buy new replacement rubber every now and then (and I did..) :).

    I really love the original grasshopper body. I know it’s not a good performing car but it looks great with a grass green paint scheme and 540 Motor instead of the 380 and it will be fun and good looking in my opinion. RC10 is my second favorite who’s with me???

    "not a follower of the Fox" oh lol, really! the Fox's roly+floppy suspension (single shock front suspension rear IRS) is what made it so cool. great traction cornering in the dirt.
    yes those pin spikes are bad news on pavement, but so nice on a groomed and dampened dirt track like they were made for running on, I know you know that! not hard packed dirt/clay, real groomed inch deep dampened fluff we seldom see anywhere anymore, was great racing stuff.

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  6 років тому +1

      I know, I miss proper offroad tracks that actually use DIRT and not that bloody clay that make you use slicks. I want to see the car sliding through turns with a rooter tail behind it...ah the good ole' days...

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 років тому

      yup, there's nothing like a real deal well groomed dirt track! the major downside of the Fox, to get at anything you have to take the top/cover off the chassis (integrated monocoque) and the car is in two pieces. good for keeping crud out of the tub and MSC, but a bit of a pain. nice was they made a way to use a few different sized pinion gears for motors and tracks.

    I LOVE that one! I liked the idea of the Super Hornet/Hopper II. Never owned either, but that's something else that Carmine and I want to change....
    YES!! That hard squat/camber/toe mad shift in reverse!! 👎👎😬 Couldn't stand that on our Hoppers and OG Hornets. That IRS you designed for these is a Godsend. Worked miracles on Carm's Lunchbox (STILL without body 😖).
    That brings up a question.... Any plans for the Superfly rear suspension to fit THESE? That would be awesome!

      Na, no plans for these cars. SuperFly 3 was a stunt. Just to show what 3D printing could do. It is expensive and hard to install and at the end of the day, a DT-03 is a better car still. It was just a fun thing to try!

      Hey Alberto, I'm looking very forward to getting the pieces together to build my own Superfly III....
      Sure, it will never be competitive, but that's not the point, is it? As for difficult, that's relative. For some, maybe... For Murph and I, not hardly!! 😎👍👍
      WE just finished cobbling together a pair of HG P402s, that can easily crawl with SCX10s, Deadbolts, and several others!! 👏😎 We replaced ALL of the suspension links, which are slightly stiffer than BUTTER, with 8-32 threaded rod, and Traxxas ball ends, that we've had laying around for years. Huge difference!
      Thank God, Murph got them, before my world collapsed. STILL in deep doo-doo, but hopefully next year looks a little better.
      The only thing those Rigs NEED, is a 3D printed, Axle-mounted steering servo bracket.... Do you KNOW anyone????? 😊😎
      The way those chassis's are designed, chassis mounted servos have HORRIBLE torque steer, and even worse bump steer! An axle mount, like the SCX10, would be ideal.... Even if NOT realistic. We've always been Performance over aesthetics!

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  7 років тому

      Oh that is the truth. Those rims cost a mint and they are super weak. Tires at least can be acquired in that size easily and the wild one does have tires that at least fit. Does no other Tamiya use the SH tires?

    • @mrclever76
      @mrclever76 7 років тому

      I'm not sure as to other Tamiya's with SH tyres. My expertise doesn't go much past the Hornet "family" of cars. I'm sure someone from the brains trust could fill us in...

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, same here. I know the Super G GH2 had those front tires but not the rears.

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 років тому

      yup, those are Fox type wheels and the offset way to the outside, they covered some of the upper/lower rear suspension so there's not room for ribbing reinforcement inside. little bit of a cone shape to the inside is all. 4 "lug" vs old hornet 5+wide wheel hub/adapters, a few differences.

  • @Bulletmachine
    @Bulletmachine 7 років тому +2

    Front wheels are virtually nonexistent in Germany, the Grasshopper 2 ones just don't look as cool.
    Are you perhaps going to modify your rollcage design for the Super Hornet?

    • @AMPROEngineering
      @AMPROEngineering  7 років тому +2

      That is a good question. So the Super Hornet does not actually need the cage since it is a hard body and it acts as the chassis structure. The Hornet is lexan and does nothing to stiffen the chassis. My next cage will be on the Falcon/Stadium blitzer. That is an awful chassis.
