Thanks for sharing - I drove to Maelifell yesterday, your video helped to get a better idea of the rivers to cross. The ford at the waterfall was a bit difficult due to steep access on both sides, but worked well. Going west towards F261 had same level of fords, ok for a Suzuki Jimny. Maelifell mountain is really iconic.
Great series with amazing shots! We're getting a Kia EV6 next year and are thinking about doing a similar roadtrip around Iceland with it some time. I don't know the specs of your e-tron, so would you say an EV6 would be able to handle most or some of the off-road routes you were taking in these videos in these good weather conditions?
I think the main difference between the Kia and the e-tron is that the e-tron has air suspension and can be lifted to high ground clearance when necessary. Either you mount a suspension lift in your EV6 or some of these roads won‘t be possible. But you could do the Kjölur 35 and the Kaldidalur 550 which are quite nice and not too challenging.
Great shots there. Love the contrast between the white Audi and the black sand. Were there many deep river crossings on the F232 other than that iconic waterfall one? Seems like it may be an easier road to Maelifell in comparison to F210 or F208 and F233.
Thanks! Yes, the F232 is definitely the easiest track to reach Mælifell. Comming via F233 or F210 you have to cross a couple of deeper fords. Typically they have a water depth between 50cm and 80cm. They are not difficult, just deep. With a Landcruiser or Defender normally no problem, the e-tron would probably be able to do this but it would be clearly above the official allowed wading depth limit and you would lose any warranty. I've done the F233/F210/F208 tracks in the past with a Nissan Patrol but wouldn't do it with an e-tron. The F232 is normally no problem for any kind of 4x4, even an ID.4 or Rav4 should be able to do it if you drive slowly and carefully. No deep fords on the F232.
In similar conditions (weather) it should be safe with the Renegade. Just check the water depths at the fords before driving through the rivers. And don‘t drive on the Sandur when it‘s flooded.
Thanks! Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac in 255/55R19. They are from the profile somewhat between an AT tire and an MT tire and have an excellent grip under nearly all conditions. I think they are the best choice for the e-tron.
@@ev_overlanding Thats sounds good. I was looking in to tires 2 weeks ago and jumped on BFGoodrich KO2 255/55/R18 and find them awesome. Can’t wait to explore Iceland more on my Volvo XC60 😎
@@ANDRITHORMEDIA The BFG are also quite good. Sadly 18" rims don't fit on the e-tron because the braking system is too large. 19" is the smallest possible rim size. Not ideal for offroad, but it worked.
I've driven through the Highlands and I'm not sure how it's really possible to be in that area for an entire day with the e-tron given that it has less than a 250 mile range. Not to claim you were the entire day, but even driving 1 hours on an F-road can be quite taxing on any vehicle in terms of fuel - gas or electric. And the closest charger that is technically on an F-road is off F26 - and even then, you're still about 30 minutes from the true F-roads. With that said, what were the logistics surrounding the charging issue? Also, was the entire F232 covered by the e-tron? By that I mean did the e-tron cross all of the rivers? The F232 road is known for medium to high depth crossings - way above the 500mm limit that I believe the e-tron can wade in.
Hi Chi, yes I‘ve driven the complete F232 with the e-tron. The water levels at that day weren‘t too high and well below the limit of the e-tron. Please read the detailed information about my trip to Iceland with the e-tron on my blog: ev-overlanding.com/2022/02/11/audi-e-tron-in-iceland-6-f232-to-maelifell/ There you will find the answers to all your question. Short summary: it‘s possible to explore some of the highlands of Iceland with a BEV you just need a bit more planning compared to an ICE vehicle.
What a lovely series.
Thanks a lot!
I agree ! Fantastic images, great information, spectacular landscape. Thank you!

Could you tell us the dates of your trip? August? September?
Thank you so much.
The trip was in the second half of August and first week of September. Maelifell was close to the end of the trip.
So amazing!! Would it be safe to take a jeep renegade 4x4 on this road??

Great footage 😎 What tires are on the car ?

And now the gamla gaesavatnaleid....
I would love to. But not with the Audi e-tron. Maybe next time with a Rivian with the max battery pack.
