I think I know why, we Dutchies are curious, and want to learn more about the world outside the Netherlands. Greetings from Roelof.
I’ve travelled to many places and on every trip I’ve met at least one fellow Dutchie. Even in the Maldives on a tiny atol you could walk around in 20 minutes, in a small 3 lift ski resort in Canada, in a rainforest in Cuba and even in a locals canteen on Maui. The lady I met there was a bit annoyed I recognized her being Dutch by her very, very slight accent. It helped she was tall and blond too.
I love nothing more than to travel, explore new cultures, eating where the locals eat and in the end I always love to come home to the Netherlands.
I m Dutch. been a sailor in the merchant marines for years and been all over the world. It is the freedom. I live in Germany.
I am Dutch and moved to Southern California 3,5 years ago. A couple weeks after moving I was at the DMV, waiting. A couple minutes later I heard a very familiar sound: good old Dutch complaining 😁 I was so surprised to even find my people at a damn DMV lol
It's curiosity. We like the freakish, weird and plain different. We see a mountain or a palmtree or eat spicy food and get all exited. We like to be able to drive more than 5 hours and still be in the same country. We also like to find out that the grass on the other side isn't greener. It's just different. Curiosity.
It's frowned upon when you're NOT going on vacation at least once a year. A lot of people go at least once or twice for a week, and throughout the year we go on weekends. Back when I lived with my parents we'd go Skiing in winter, then a week to France in spring, then two or three weeks in summer to wherever usually camping, and in fall we'd go a weekend somewhere and sometimes another weekend in December to Germany or something. Oh I forgot we also go camping every single year in NL with family in May (next week). But half the time we'd go camping in the Netherlands, it's definitely not boring :) Some people I know go every two weekends, for 3-4 days. A coworker of mine went skiing 3 times this year. I'm not kidding. Everybody is traveling all the time. I cannot keep up sometimes at work lol.

I, as a Dutchie travel at least 3 times in 1 year to countries all over the world. In my family we call the Dutch thumbleweeds. They are everywhere!
You invited my neighbor for your video. I live in the Dominican Republic and I'm Dutch. Going to the beach in Sosua I always meet up to 3 Dutchmen running a bar on the beach. I went after retirement with my Dominican wife to her country. I'm 79 and live in Santiago de los Caballeros. I've lived in Switzerland and Portugal for half a year (study and business), spend a year in Germany for NATO as a conscript in the Dutch Army and worked for 10 years in Brussels for Eurocontrol (say the FAA of the EU) living in Antwerp. I visited; Paraguay; Saudi Arabia; USA East and West coast; Mexico for business and all West and North European countries for business and/or holidays.
When I was drinking a beer in Holiday Inn in Baltimore with colleagues around 1980, the only other man at the bar said in Dutch to us: "Stop bragging". He had been a sailor and when WW2 in Europe was won, his ship was in New York. He had celebrated the end of WW2 in New York. When he went back to the harbor after the celebration, his ship had left and since that time he lived in the USA.
You see, we always have a good reason to move to another country.
Very simple....we travel a lot because its in our genes, and because we have enough time to do it

I'm Dutch and I travel a lot trough Europapa. And yes it's true, you see 'm everywhere. I spoke to a Frenchman once and he was convinced there were at least as much Dutch in the world as French. And they have 60 million people. But most stay at home.
I don't know about many other Dutch, but personally I travel because I am curious and I do not have to go far to be amazed by something.

There's literally tons of activities in each city in the Netherlands,
festivals, music , theatres, films, horeca, art, musea, a cultural density prevalent in Europe.
18 million inhabitants (almost as many people as scandinavian countries together, or Portugal, or Greece a.s.o.
For European standard's The Netherlands is a middle big country because of the population. Yet there's a lot of nature, forests, isles, and not every corner of the country as that flatt...
P.s. people in a small state in U.S.
will mostly commute within 3 and a half hours as well.
Small country yes, but not tiny either...
Dutch of all languages is closest to English and everybody speaks English, which makes travelling also accessable...

I think we Dutch crave for new experiences while we still can. As far as I know we also like to learn foreign languages and especially how to say thank you and please of the language of the country were we happen to be.
I am never bored of the netherlands, but i like traveling, i do this as much as i can, also short trips in europe, for 4 or 5 day's for 2 weeks or 3 i go outside of europe. I do this at least 3 times per year. But the netherlands has beautifull parts
I am born in the Netherlands and my whole family traveled around the world. Sometimes I the destination was 24 hours with the Plain with waiting time. It doesn't stop us. Just curious and learning about other cultures. And you learn to adapt.
The Dutch are called the Chinese of Europe. The Chinese are everywhere.
That is why we speak so many languages.
Schiphol is a traveling hub for planes. All other planes come to Amsterdam to jump on the next plane, therefor we are very well connected.
Like Roelof said "We Dutchies are curious, and want to learn more about the world outside the Netherlands." We allso have the time en the meanings. Most of us have about 30 to 40 payed holidays each year.
From my city in the Netherlands to Paris in France is just 4,5h drive. I cross 2 borders in 4hrs time.

There is one thing you'll always find on your trip no matter where you go. Go explore some old forgotten place where you only expect to find locals and the Dutch are there. Go stand on an uninhabited island or in the middle of some jungle and scream "is daar iemand?" and you'll be answered with "serieus, Nederlanders?".
I think too many of us want to not meet fellow Dutchies on a trip that we end up thinking alike and going to the same places.

I always say we're like flees, we're everywhere. I traveled to Norway, small roads, waterfalls, totally 'lost' and I decided to park for a moment and in front of me... Dutch car...

What I have seen from Americans in general, they want convenience!!!! They sit in a bus or whatever convenient transportation and whatch it from a safe cool (AC) place. I know not all are like that and you can consider yourself a lucky man, that the military gave you the tool to mingle with other people and listen to their stories. It widens your Horizon 😉

Paul, I think you can also answer this one. Why are you traveling and what does it do to you? I've lived in Africa and these cultures teach you a lot and makes you a different person, right? We Dutchies wanna explore and learn, so maybe in a later stage of life, you can use it for a complete different purpose or occasion.
Fact is that in old english you had a similar word as the dutch word 'gezellig', this was 'gesaelig' (meaning: happy, blessed).
He's not wrong about our country being boring. It's flat, full of farms and cities, and without a lot of interesting natural phenomena. We have no mountains, waterfalls, volcanoes, cliffs, we have few forests. Basically all natural wonders you'd like to see, we don't have, which I know is a large reason I travel. I just like to see the mountains.
It is not only travelling. There are more dutch people living outside the Netherlands than in the country.
In the UA-cam channel Type Ashton, Ashton, she is American,living in Germany, poses the question Why, traveling around the world, she hears so many people speak German. Its very interesting too.

Dutch are traveling because when you are young you can do physically more than when you are older you do more culture and less physically. And i do believe that traveling is something in our DNA, for censeries the Dutch are a trading country, still are. Dutch people are curious and want to see how people in the global world are living their life and learned from that.And we are free to do what ever we want.

Personally, i'm not the travelling kind. Never got on a plane, don't want to either. If I can get somewhere within hours by car or boat it's fine by me. Still in another country. But I'm a "going to the camping" generation. 😊 I Have family in Australië but not the urges to go there. Our son (25) does want to travel. We have so much nationalities here who they meet, and are friends with, they just want to visit their homeland. Or just to party elsewhere😅
Almost 1.000.000 dutch People live abroad the Netherlands. That's about 3.8 % of all the Dutchies. They leave to find the beter life. And about 5.000.000 go on holiday outside the Netherlands

Many young people take a ‘gap year’ to travel before starting a career or next study. Look at the surnames in the USA. Johnson: the son of John comes from the Dutch name of Jansen, the son of Jan. Many American presidents also had Dutch descent; Martin van Buren was an ethnic Dutchman, who spoke Dutch as his native language. Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were of Dutch descent, as were Presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush have Dutch ancestors. Yankee= Jan Kees. New York boroughs often still have a Dutch origin, such as Brooklyn (Breukelen), Staten Island (Staten-Generaal), Harlem (Haarlem), Coney Island (Konijnen Eiland) and Flushing (Vlissingen). Etc.
The same happened in Canada en Australia. I think traveling was instilled in the Dutchies from a young age. On this moment Sven (25) and Rick (22) take a cycling trip to Vietnam: 'Not the shortest, but most beautiful route mapped out'. About 18,000 to 20,000 km.😊
The Netherlands are not boring but we like to travel and meet other cultures. But still we will leave the Netherlands after retiring for serveral reasons and go to Czech Republic.
if you explain where the world 'gezellig' hails from. 'gezel' means companion ... they 'ig' modifier turns it into a word refering to a situation.
Maybe we get noticed more be-course most dutch travelers speak very wel English and where not afraid to use it. If your traveling and you can't talk to anyone you will not get noticed.
