The flame character looks gorgeous, but my heart kinda goes out to the Pixar staff that had to try and make a riggable flame puppet. Drawing fire is already difficult, I can't begin to imagine how much harder it would be to animate it.
Yeah i think the water guys is super cool, but I don't like the fire girl as i do for water.
As an animator I can confirm that it’s extremely difficult lol. Not impossible though, just extremely extremely difficult.
Elemental is my favorite Pixar movie light year is a close second and I like how the looked because they look like they were just living there life and weren’t superheroes but I do like the redesign.
@@8-balllaufeyson948so you just have a kink for trash movies then?
While I do like the redesigns, I don't feel like they portray the characters' personalities as well as the originals do. These are just cooler versions of the characters, leaving out their insecurities and flaws.
As someone else mentioned, designing characters for animation includes how they move in 2D/3D, how do their emotions read, are they meant to break the mold or enforce it, etc. In many cases, studios use archetypes to enforce the audience's understanding of a character, to create a sort of shortcut to the character's personality and background.
100% this
I have to agree with you, honestly. They're beautiful images, but the personalities of the characters they're based on don't come through at all. They feel less like characters and more like your standard elemental monsters you'd find as enemies in a video game.
I like how the water guy DOES NOT look like Julia's dad, and yet that's the comparison you made. He looks like Luca's dad.
YES ! I thought that too
Please do a whole series redrawing animated movies!! I’d LOVE to see brand new renditions of any and all Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks! Xx
Yesyesyesyesyeeeees❤❤❤❤❤
100% endorse this!
Yes that would be brilliant
That would be a good series
Love the designs! Having a hard time hearing you both though - is it possible to up the volume?
I came here to say this as well. Insert Art is always super quiet.
While I certainly agree with you on the unoriginality of Pixar recently, and I do enjoy your interpretations, I think this is an apples and oranges situation. You've drawn static 2D characters without any constraints. Not only is Pixar making a 3D full length feature animation, I'd imagine there are certain requirements that need to be met so that the characters become appealing to a wide audience. Saying yours are "better" doesn't take these things into consideration and is probably a bit unfair. BUT, it would be nice to see Pixar try to mix things up a bit.
Pixar also has hundreds of artists and a massive budget. So I'd call it even.
love the designs they're really cute :) but i think it would be nightmare to animate 3D models like that :D thats probably why the pixar characters look so similar, because the current pixar style is a very expressive artstyle which supports over the top animations.
Love your take on the elemental characters. Alysha's water elemental has so much more depth and projects power, while Kat's fire elemental has a lithe and dangerous look. Both very distinct and better than the amorphous blobs Pixar served up.
Redraws of some of Pixar's more recent offerings (and expanding to other animation studios) should definitely be a series on your channel.
You did such a great job with this video, I would definitely like to see more.
A part two with the other elements would be very nice! Bring some change to that cloud woman character who has literally only one render being used in any promo material I’ve seen
Really like how you guys designed Wade and Ember! The rendering you guys used is really pleasing to look at
Could you do a video explaining how to recognise styles? I think lots of us do it intuitivly without knowing how why are doing it.
You guys are way more natural now! Video flows really well
Yessss! So glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks the more recent character designs are too similar. On a personal note, I'm also not a fan of the formless, boneless, squishy look. But that's just a personal taste. Gimme bones and angles any day
These dont even have the heart or spirit of a pixar character anymore, if anything these are the boring ones now. Just your typical rpg elemental
BTW, the jazza brushes also work in Adobe Fresco, because Fresco is compatible with photoshop brushes. I've used procreate on the ipad for years and recently switched to Fresco. I was happy that I could bring my jazza brushes over. Excellent work.
Maybe Pixar feels under pressure to churn out movies quickly, so they’ve fallen into a habit?
The designs that Kat and Alysha created are perfect! Very dynamic, and absolutely represent the elements they’re based in. I’d love to see them fully characterised and animated. That would be amazing.
And yes, I’d love to see you guys recreate various Pixar characters - I’d love to see you pick one out at random to do…
great drawings, now animate them in a movie WHILE keeping that level of detail consistantly thoughout the whole 60+minutes, dont forget, there are also budgeting and deadlines to meet
AND lighting differences to consider during scene changes
Less is more when it comes to animation details hence the simplicity of main characters. The way the elements move are actually really good
It's rough to call the soft rounded style 'CalArts' style when it's not like California Institute of the Arts is particularly responsible for it.
They didn't invent it by any means, but they're probably responsible for the sudden influx of seemingly *every artist* working on cartoons these days using it
At this point, it's not worth debating the origin of it when everyone understands what the term "CalArts style" invokes. The bean-mouth, thin outline, soft-shaped, near corporate-advertisement level of plain. Pixar does it in 3D, it became standard with Steven Universe and Amphibia yet had origins in Adventure Time, Gumball and Gravity Falls (all three more visually unique than what the style has settled into). Defined by its cheap-to-animate nature and familiarity with new hires at animation studios...
The argument of it not being FROM "California Institute of the Arts" is likely completely true, but its never the point of people using the term. It comes off as a petty and unsolicited correction, like Jesus's birth not being in December or Halloween (originally) being a religious holiday. Its good trivia, but not relevant enough to warrant this constant correction. I don't think its possible to get people to call it anything else.
Great designs! I really enjoy watching you two create your artworks. This redrawing animated movie characters would make a good series.
Q: Why is Insert Art audio so much quieter than Jazza and Table. Top Time? I've got my volume as loud as it goes and I'm still missing things.
Kat's flame character looks actually sick. reminds me of the flame atronarchs from skyrim but more flame
I think Alysha did the flame one
Disney has a habit of doing this from the start and maybe that’s why Pixar tend to do that these days?! Beautiful work with your characters 💜
to say that pixar’s designs sucked and then show up with those amateurish concepts is quite funny
You were sketching Wade, and talking basic shapes, and mentioned that characters with these shapes tend to be villainous. Shust as you said that, you were drawing a beveled trapezoid head on a broad chest, and I *immediately* thought of the robot Maximillian from "The Black Hole"!
Firstly, those are gorgeous!!! You've got some serious talent!
Secondly... I don't think that would really work, considering the plot has nothing to do with anything that would require a jacked physique. If it were a war-film, like Mulan... then sure... but this was more like Lady and the Tramp, or Hunchback of Notre Dame, or even The Parent Trap... they went for the elegant, normal look/aesthetic, and it honestly worked really well. I can't think of another male character as loveable as Wade is, besides maybe Christoph or Pacha... he's not jacked, nor obese... just a regular, loveable dude, and that doesn't happen very often... and while they certainly went the "Disney-Cute" route for Ember... she's no Jasmine, Meg or Jane.
But yes, outstanding job, and well done! If they made a sequel that was more along the lines described, we've seen both Ember and Wade can take forms very similar to what you've drawn, so I could totally see such styles in cannon.
you guys should try something like this again but actually animate it! because some of the choices made by pixar is to simplify the animation process
And make it recognizable, they could be anything
The water guy, and the monster's inc guy are actually voiced by the same person. He's voiced a character in every pixar film.
These designs feel way more adult than the original and don't fit the personalities of the characters in my opinion. Pixar has a definite style and I don't see what is wrong with sticking to their style, most other artists are praised for their distinct style.
They were much more original than the Pixar versions. My only criticism is the parallel angled lines in the water elemental, I think it might have looked more water-like if it was less consistent, but overall, stil looked awesome!
For a kids show all I can say is thay have no cloths even if thay were flames and water just so thay don't look completely naked
While your characters are beautiful, I would say that Pixar did better at conveying the characters personalities and telling their story through their visual choices.
Wade's character is very vulnerable, and open. His strength comes from his fluidity, and his willingness to care for others and empathize. His design wasn't meant to be the sturdy "dorito chip dad of stability". He is meant to be soft, empathetic, and unconcerned with displaying weakness. Your rendition of him, although beautiful, comes across very tough and superhero like.
Ember's character is strong willed, but uncertain. Her inner conflict comes from being so competent, but not knowing where her inner desires would direct all that talent and drive. Making her so sharp, bright, and wisp-like gives her the appearance of being clever and strong, but doesn't necessarily display the uncertainty or weakness of her character. Additionally, she and her family display a very hard working ethic, which is why I think the animators chose to make them stouter, and more sturdy looking. It helped convey that "dependability" you were talking about in the rectangular design of Mr. Incredible.
I'd love to see more of these, but maybe consider the characters, not just the concepts when re-designing them. Great art either way!
I would love to see redraws of the other elements, too. The air elements, being clouds, is silly because clouds are made of water, so they're not really a good example of their element.
love how chill this video is
All dads sounds like a hilarious concept 😂
Great job guys!
to be fair, i did see very rendered 3d concept art of ember (Mostly by maria yi) that is like a fusion of what you guys did and the character herself? like lots of people said already they probably flattened it to rig a 3d model of her, which is unfortunate. the thing i liked the least about the fire designs is how they made the mouth and eyes flat dark lines instead of playing with the opposite, as the inside of a flame id assume is actually hotter therefore brighter. the concepts were still nice, despite the fact that there are obvious stereotypes like a goopy version of strong hercules and buzz lightyear in wade, with the tiny only chest and shoulders day bottom and wide rectangle top and basically teardrop face.
Your designs feel like they belong in a much more abstract movie-more abstract than I could ever imagine Pixar doing, but it's a really nice style. Also, the video is way too quiet compared to the ads. It's hard to hear you guys
I have never had my volume up to 100%, and still couldn't hear a video that Jazza produced. Before Now.
Ooh amazing artwork! Great techniques for water and fire in this video! I have difficulty with recognizing what styles are, but I can sort of intuitively recognize that Pixar and Disney have one... My question is when do you innovate and when do you stick with what works? I feel that if you don't innovate people stop coming to see as it's too much the same, but if you just innovate then you don't really have a "style" from what my understanding is of it... How do you balance both? Loved the idea, and how you incorporated the questions of the day! Please do more! (No matter what Jazza says 🤭😉)
Im absolutely LOVING the shapes used in all designs. So appealing to look at!
I would LOVE to see you doing Luca as well!
This was awesome. You two are my favorite INSERT pair! More Pixar, more you guys
At the end when you put them together, the water element looks like a mob boss with his fiery sexy girlfriend.
Yes, do Luca! And anything else! 😂 Love the designs!
You both are absolutely amazing artist !!! I love your redraws !!! Definitely need to do more redraws from Pixar , and “ Dadify “ them
Your designs are so cool! Would love to see these extrapolated to a movie!
These look so good!!!
I always like the pieces that has the movement flowing all the way around.. and elemental characters really lean into that! I love the characters you designed 🥰
Ooo! Earth and Air! And also Luca! I like both ideas to be honest. 😄
Jazza's tool work wonders for fire!!! Pixar just needs to buy Jazza's digital drawing tools.
These/Your designs look amazing. When I first saw the trailer I immediately thought of Inside Out (one of the most wonderful movies out there). The designs and color story is similar (for me at least). 🥰 Loved the video and the idea! More of that!!! 🙋☺️
I love your sincere rawness, pixar movies and disney movies suck. Since 2006 when disney acquired pixar it has gone downhill for the exeption of 3 movies
My biggest gripe, yeah the fire animations in Elemental look a little off-putting, but I'm gonna see it this weekend regardless. I kind of like that the movie designs are simple personally. Cuz it IS a kids movie at the end of the day.
The advertising for the movie didn't do it justice from what I heard so I wanna give it a shot, I personally haven't seen a "mixed race relationship" movie with that as the core theme of the film (I'm not usually a movie person... At all 😅).
Jazza, you should get the Insert Artists to redo Luca characters!! That would be so fun and cool!
Omg! Your characters are so much better than what pixar did! Awesome work guyss, do moreee plsss❤
So much fun! these look great!
Painting fire, here's the rule to remember: "DARK TO LIGHT, LOOSE TO TIGHT".
It was so nice yo get a little glimpse of your friends! They seem really nice and funa
Older school Disney recycles characters a lot. 😂
Maybe go for Monsters Inc. These are already somewhat unique, but what would your childhood monster look like?
The water element now looks like the bad guy in Nightmare Before Christmas. But it looks cool.
I haven't seen the movie yet but now I'm going to be focused on the artwork once I do. 🤣 Great art and video. BRAVA!
I get what you’re saying with the Pixar art being similar across multiple movies… but I think it’s because that look is the Pixar “style” and they wanna be on-brand with their character design. Kinda like how the older cartoon Disney princesses all had a very similar style- you can always identify Disney animations and Pixar animations
Kat, love your hair! You look like a superhero.
Plz do more Pixar & maybe other 3d characters reimagined!
Loved the improvements you both made, so much more style
do Luca, follow your heart!
I love the redesigns, especially of the flame characters.
yeah. please do more Pixar! :)
I like them! They have a more fantasy feel to it.
I would love to see your take on more Pixar stuff, Luca, Toy Story and possibly Monsters Inc. awesome content as always ladies and gent.
The thing that bothers me most, is that the majority of the movie is our society, but people are "elements". Where is the creativity in designing a world that these characters would actually live in and have developed based on their unique needs and interactions?
They're lovely!
Earth and Air please.
Amazing work as usual! I don't know if its my side, but my volume is maxed out and you girls were very quiet.
They both look amazing. I would love to see your take on Luca.
Do other Pixar characters like luca
I do agree with Pixar's over-reliance on the Cal-Arts design (I think Luca and Turning Red are the biggest offenders). I think these renditions look cool, but not "cute" which I think is more important for a lot of what Pixar does. These drawings are less human to me. They feel more like video game villains; more like monsters than the ones in Monsters Inc. They don't have proper eyes that I can connect to and see myself in. Too abstract, maybe. All that being said, the artistry itself is amazing and I'd love to see more redesigns of other Pixar characters! :)
really prettyy
I would love to see a video about Lion King characters, also How to train your dragon... Love your videos!
OMG I do wanna see Luca redesigned! ❤❤
Will the digital brushes be compatible with Affinity Designer one day?
The original design of the water guy is bottom heavy like a water drop.
Hmmm, curious about how you would do inside out
would maybe advise turning up the volume a bit? i don't know if anyone else has noticed, but this video seems a bit...quiet? i usually watch youtube videos at a volume of about 20 and can hear everything, meanwhile here i have it turned up to 40 and at some parts it's still very quiet... might just be my laptop though, just ignore the comment unless anyone else is having the same issue.
Please do more pixar or other animations
I'm not the only one who thinks the Pixar designs are trash! Really love what you two did. They have a lot stronger of a design, I feel
I actually liked this video more because you are coming more into your own. You were open about your opinions and express them well. I know it comes with time, but I really feel a lack of energy (if I can call it that) that I get from Jazza videos. You need to feel more comfident and at ease on camera so it doesn't feel like you are affraid of tripping over your words or saying the wrong thing. The "happpy acvidents" need to happen so that we, the audience, don't feel like we're watching something scripted.
Anyway, this is just feedback and the art looks great. Also (and again) I think Alysha should really try sending her portfolio to Hollywood or any animation or triple A videogame studio, really. Her (and Morgan's also btw) work is really at THAT level imo.
Earth and air because of ATLA and then Luca because you like that
I'd love to see remained older movie/tv characters. Bambi. Watership Down. Bananaman. Inspector Gadget etc.
😲 Bambi!!! Love this [Alysha]
I do like these designs a lot more than the originals, but I can't help thinking that they'd be a nightmare to animate.
they good the way they are, much harder to animate than people understand lol
Take notes, Pixar!!! =)
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO MORE PIXAR!!!❤❤❤❤😆😆😆😆
Ohh finding Nemo! That sounds great. Yes please more Pixar
Please guys speak up or make the volume a bit louder and consistent! Every time an ad comes up or you laugh my headphones blow up! ❤🙏
Please draw more Disney characters ❤❤❤
Waaayyy better. Way more character! Way more fun. Love it.
I wish the entire industry would start doing cool things and trying fun things instead of just “power”women “finding themselves” 😂 I’m over it
They look like superheroes
okay hear me out, I have an idea. make a sheath for it that has blacklight LEDs inside so when you unsheath the sword it's ready glowing at its max brightness
Just do both air and earth, then other Pixar characters. Get rest of Insert Art team to do earth and air!!!!
yes please do luca
The volume is a bit low.
