  • I continue my search for the best seaside tourist destinations in England - this week Hayling Island! Situated on the south coast of England in the borough of Havant, Hampshire. But is it worth a visit this Summer? Find out in my latest 4K walking tour!
Walk with me down the beautiful seafront with its beaches that roll on for miles, with some great views over towards Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. Plenty of places to get a coffee, places to eat and plenty of pubs! I also pass Funland, the classic amusement park with rollercoasters, rides and attractions. There’s something to do for all the family. The place has a very retro feel to it and is extremely quiet and tranquil, which I wasn’t expecting at all.
Whether it’s for a day trip or a proper holiday, come and judge for yourself if this is one of the best places to go in Hampshire!
If you don’t know me already, I’m Jack and I’m exploring the UK, making travel vlogs as I go. I’d be so grateful for your support, so please do like the video, leave a comment and subscribe to the channel!

I grew up on Hayling. The island comes alive when it's hot and sunny.
You must go back when in high summer season.
Head to the northern part called Northney and then to the top of sandy point.

Thanks for your comment, I can really imagine it’s a different vibe completely! I’ll be sure to check out Northney when I go back 😄

As a kid, many many years ago, my family had 2 holidays at the Sunshine Camp. Never saw a beach, only mud flats.
Never forgotten that. Even though I now live just along the coast - and have done for 40 years - I've never been back.

Hi Jack, If you are still on hayling, have dinner or a pint at the olive leaf, lovely pub. Do a walk on the billy trail and also don't forget the Northney tea room. You can also visit the donkey sanctuary. The coastguard house is the mainhub for the coastguard on Hayling island and they train there as well on Thursday. Have fun around here!

Hey thanks so much for your recommendations, sadly I’m not there anymore but I’ll definitely be back so that’s helpful. I did read up about the donkey sanctuary afterwards so sad I missed it at the time

Not sure what day you picked to come down but it's not normally that quiet! In the hot summer (lol) months it is very busy and yes has a slightly faded feel about it but that is what I personally like about it and what attracted me to live here. It is known as the windy island which is possibly why the trees are bent like that. I would say come back on a sunny day. People are generally lovely and friendly. Have a chat with people at the coffee shops as there is a wealth of local knowledge here - always interesting to chat to people as well. Next week the Ferry Boat is running a D-Day 80th anniversary; Thursday night is bike night and usually very busy. But sometimes as you say just to sit and listen to the waves is a very calming experience.

Thank you very much for your comment, it’s so weird I’ve heard from loads of people about how thriving it usually is, and I only visited last week but it was probably the first ‘rubbish’ weather day in a few weeks 😅

Some places are great out of season, Hayling and Margate two places I much prefer in season. The railway (with it's Thorpe Park connection) and Funland are the main draws, really like that small fair, awesome donuts

I thought I was watching a reboot of The Road for a second with you playing Viggo Mortensen with how dull and empty it was down there. There is a really cool hot rod show I go to on the beach at Funland twice a year which is put on by the local hot rod club; The Victory Wheelers so I have only ever seen it absolutely rammed and sunny, was weird seeing the opposite! The show is mainly held on the beach right next to the roller coasters.

a couple of my friends live on hayling island and i used to work with my friend on the island as well for about 2 years. growing up going to the island on summer holidays as a little kid to play in the arcades and go on rides to see how hayling island is now as an adult, its gone downhill since. the arcades and the theme park only now seem to be rental only for birthdays, im unsure if the car boot sale is still ongoing anymore, floods happen on the island super frequently which i used to have to cycle to work thru and while working there, i noticed alot of the rich people are quite self entitled. ive been hit by ignorant drivers, had people bomb over the speed limit past me in their race car, just in 2 years, there had been like 40 different crashes and at least a 5th of them related to misuse of drug/alcohol instances and alot of the people ive talked to and crossed on there at least, arnt the nicest of people.
as for travel on there, it seems to just be far better to walk there rather than get any other form of travel. traffic jams practically run throughout the day and are far worse when there is a flood, theres no longer a railway system going onto the island and hasnt been for i think over 20 years now which has still been an endless ongoing fight to have it put back in and connect back up to the town station it used to be connected to and even by means of cycling and the electric bikes & scooters, u cant always get on the island because of the floods. personally, the only benefit ive come across growing up and going to the island frequently is the billie trail in which the train used to run along. its the only scenic part of the island ik in which is the only benefit to the island.

Hey thanks so much for the comment and that is a really interesting insight. Obviously I was only here for a day so wouldn’t have had a clue about any of those things but it’s good to know, and I must’ve hit the traffic at a good time!

@@jackryanmiller traffic is okay on some days but still busy. yet again, when I worked on the island before. there were few days in which werent so busy traffic wise but most of the week or half of the week, it usually runs pretty much throughout the day. ive never really known traffic going on and off the island to not be busy and thanks to the super tight roads and poor management of those roads and paths as well as only 1 way on and off the island, u can imagine how bad and stressful it can get. add flooding into it and at times, people cant even get on or off the island because of it at times.

@@roscoeswrld5953 ive worked on the island myself and i can agree to some extent that even working at one of the hotel resorts on the island back in 2021 to 2022 before i was made redundant from a bs excuse they made that my supervisors and some workmates were just rude and lazy. i have many stories just working at lakeside there in which ive either been mistreated, forced to carry the burden of other workmates laziness, workmates faking illnesses so they get paid and dont need to come in and when i was a f&b assistant, being 1 of 2 people that whole 2 years i worked there, serving 400 guests or more on our own as the people working on the stands by the guests didnt have to do the main meals. i asked numerous times for a pay raise and they made excuses till they ended up saying no on a technical excuse basis.
its not just the poor working conditions and the workmates but also alot of the guests as well. alot of guests had this very snobby self entitled attitude all because they are rich and think they can treat the workers like crap. now i previously worked as a steward before that job at a horse racing festival in chichester for 2 months so i learned to just deal with whatever shit is thrown at me and ignore it. my workmates on the other hand would openly swear infront of guests as a way to be approachable and informal, often times rude, refuse to serve guests sometimes for good reason and the list goes on. i had even witnessed our head chef at the time come out pissed off that some guest was being an ass and tryna abuse the system to get more free food that he came out shouting at the guests which the whole room could hear. im all for give people a taste of their own medicine but making the whole room go quiet because u have a problem with a specific guest and went to have a go at them for it, doesnt help the company nor does it make it easier for us to have to now deal with the issue when we already have many issues to deal with.
